I'm afraid I rather think you must at least have some sort of hearing defecit.

Devoto enunciates with more definition. They have similar voices, certainly, but they're still pretty distinct from each other, I'd say.

If you actually play different versions of the same song, sung by Devoto and Shelley, back to back, there's absoultely no mistaking the difference - Shelley sings in a higher register entirely!

You wouldn't believe the number of schoolmates I had who thought that Pete Shelley Out Of The Buzzcocks was the same Pete Shelley who did "Love Me Love My Dog."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Shelley Out Of The Buzzcocks would never have been able to cover that song convinclingly.

Howard Devoto on the other hand.... nah!

I remember trying to buy "Homosapien" and getting handed "Love me love my dog" at OurPrice/whatever, back in the day...

(picky folk: LMLMD had been reissued to absolutely no interest, back in 1982 or thereabouts)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine that the rather depraved Pete Shelley who sang "Homosapien" would manage to confer a whole new meaning to the lyric of "Love Me Love My Dog", that would make the nice Peter Shelley who originally sang "Love Me Love My Dog", barf all down his nice arran sweater and smart casual slacks.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Arr, but then wasn't Alvin going to do that one, or am I thinking of "Gee Baby"?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Alvin Stardust?

Which one was he going to do? "Homosapien" or "Love Me Love My Dog"?

I don't know which of those prospects is making my head (and stomach) spin more!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that pete shelley wrote or co-wrote all his early stuff...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

So I have already Googled.

I have also Googled that he co-wrote "Love Me Love My Dog" with none other than Marty Wilde!

"....
Love me, live my life, and travel through this land.
I can't leave a friend, I promised that before we started,
...."

I dunno now, maybe that just might work after all....

The odd thing is that the same arghument works for for the other Pete Shelley and Alvin Stardust, because even though PS wrote all the songs and AS sang, their first release was sung by shelley with Alvun Stardust mimimg on TOTP. They sounded identical to me.

[ conjurs up mental image of Alvin Stardust miming to "Orgasm Addict" ]
