Parilament - "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)"

I nearly said "Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop)" but then I realised just in time that this would mean me having to type the word "Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop" and, since I'm not at all sure how to even spell "Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop", I thought that probably wan't a very good idea.

I think these threads are great (unprompted recall, the lifeblood of research!) *but* this is a bad way of doing them cos I bet some people ARE cheating - much better would be some kind of form whereby the answers get sent to a text file and so people can't see what other people have put.

Who Says Funk Bands Can't Play Rock?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I just vastly prefer some commentary, and I tend to get fed up w/more list threads

"What is Soul?" anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea with the Beatles thread is because I was thinking about people who hate the Beatles. And then I thought "well how can you hate the music of the Beatles? They changed their style, angle, fashion and music throughout their career and are loved and hated for all of these." so then I was wondering if there is one solid thing that people think about when they think of the Beatles or not? And it seems that there is not.
If I were to start a similar thread with the Beach Boys I'd expect about 70% of answers to be Good Vibrations or something from Pet Sounds and for people to have a very specific image of the Beach Boys in their heads despite the fact that they evolved and grew in the same way as the Beatles.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my reason for starting this thread, by the way, was because on the beatles thread everyone was like 'whoa, look at all the different songs everyone's picking, how awesome is that?' and i was annoyed because a) the beatles are such sacred cows for god's sake and b) parliament and funkadelic have, for me, as many great songs and c) i was curious as to what people would say if they didn't know what other people were saying

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

can you get to that

willem (willem), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

also because geo. clinton always admitted that he was influenced by:
1. james brown
2. sly stone
3. the beatles

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, fair enough. I freely admit to being nr1 moaner! Still, commentary, people! That's what I like best abt this place - not just what you like, but why you like it!!

(+ I like parliament/funkadelic loads more than the beatles, fwiw)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

okay:

"wizard of finance" is a slow jam on funkentelechy vs. the placebo syndrome, it takes all the 'oh how good i'd treat you if i were rich' cliches and amps them up, tossing in tons of fake-financial terms, a lazy sunday horn chart, and a keening soul vocal that refuses to stick to one mood. still, it's their most romantic song in a long career, and therefore adorable. also, it's the only song on this great record that one could actually have sex to, because the others are either too weird or too dancey.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I picked "Maggot Brain" because -

- I hardly know any P/F but I remember that one.
- I posted something about maggots on FT today so they were in my, well, brain.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What I like about "What is Soul" = the lyrics are really funny & weird - "a joint rolled in toilet paper", "a ham-hock in your cornflakes" (+ for years we all thought he was saying "a hammer in your cornflakes"!!) and so on, and even though I've heard it loads of times, I'm still kind of like "what did he just say?? when I listen to it. Also, half the time it sounds like they're going to start corpsing. When the music picks up, there's this totally fucking mad wah-guitar line, where the guitarist loses time w/the band, and he kind of pulls it back together - it's this real head-fucking sound, it's like music turning inside-out. Mainly I like it b/c it's a happy and funny record, and I think happy and funny, when they are actually happy and funny are kind of massively undervalued in music.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)
