Clash-ups! CDR80

Morley and I were observing, after hearing DJ Fucking In The Streets's set at the LCD/MIA show last Wednesday, that so many mash-ups use the Clash. Why is that? (Asking earnestly..)

Anyway, it's Morley's term, but I want to go with the term, and make a definitive guide to Clash-ups.. i.e. mash-ups that involve The Clash, that can fit in a CDR80. The bigger variety of Clash sample sources the better..

My first and most painfully obvious one: Basement Jaxx "The Magnificent Romeo"

Also, songs who heavily sample the Clash are welcome too i.e. Joakim's "Are You Vegetarian?"

Split!

(Someone has done this over three years ago, most likely, I know.. but I'm wondering if, since then, there can be a Clash-up comp made with a larger palette.)

Don't forget to include that London Calling mash-up comp.

Don't tell me... The London Blacking Album?

London Booted it was called. "Spanish Bombs (Over Baghdad)" is good.

Give 'Em Enough Z was the best though.

I'd guess the reason there are so many is that the Clash did a number of instrumental 12-inch B-sides (e.g. "The Magnificent Dance"). That and they were quite groove-minded after London Calling, which always helps.

Ultra 396's "Rock the Party" ("Casbah" + Pink's "Get the Party Started") is a HUGE fave of mine

The one that blends the guitar riff from I Fought The Law into the Teenage Kicks Solo

M Philip O'Nyman (Ferg), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to M - I'll grant that, but I think I count the number of those B-sides though... I can think of... "The Magnificent..", "This is Radio Clash", "Rock The Casbah".. "This is England".. there's four there. Otherwise, I don't think The Clash got into instrumental B-sides until Sandinista!, which is pretty obvious, as that's when they started experimenting with more dancey elements (as well as dub and reggae, even moreso.) Also granted, I'm talking about stuff that could be done live, theoreticallly. Pre-conceived, chopped up, etc. the entire catalog has tons to offer.

Still, that's really small compared to say, Rick James, who has about over a dozen 12" singles each with instrumental versions.. and I'm not talking about anything near the mid 80s Glow era.

I don't mean to make a big conspiracy about it. Morley and I were just noting given the relatively small domain of Clash instrumentals, that there were an uncanny amount of mash-ups using the Clash. All respect to them.. but many other worthwhile acts with instrumental B-sides didn't get used nearly as much. That's all! Never mind me.

Also, I'll give The Clash some credit for adding a lot of echo and color to their instrumentals, whereas they don't exist as much on the originals -- whereas the Rick James ones are just the songs minus Rick James on it, and that's it.

from London Booted, search "What About Brixton" by Loo & Placido, even if they faked the Guns of Brixton vocals.

otherwise, Dunproofin's "Casbah Wonder" (with Stevie singing "Uptight") is the best I've heard.

whatever that one was that made me think of it originally, that blended "Rock the Casbah" with "Somebody Told Me"
