TS: Genesis' "From Genesis To Revelation" vs. The Bee Gees' "Bee Gees' 1st"

Both are wavy, lightweight Moody Blues-ish psychedelia that are miles away stylistically from the sounds that would make each artist famous. "The Silent Sun" from the Genesis debut is probably better than anything on the Bee Gees LP, but, as a whole, Bee Gees' 1st is something to be reckoned with. What say ye?

Geir to weigh in on the topic in 10... 9... 8...

when I was a fairly big Genesis album I wondered if that first one was any good, but my fellow Genesis-luvvahs told me it was "too pop" so I shunned it

then I turned 15

Genesis fan I mean, not album, jeez do I need sleep

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

then...?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, did you ever get around to hearing it?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

what I meant was: then I turned 15 and the massive pop-hating my Genesis-lovin' friends and I had been doing began to seem rather patently rooted in something other than actually having listened to pop, and I began to like pop, and I threw the prog out with the bathwater and never looked back

I did not hear the album and am actually curious about how it is!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The first track is good psych-pop, the rest is pretty lame.

I like pop and I like prog, they aren't mutually exclusive.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What I remember being good abt the first track is Gabriel's voice was really snotty and posh-sounding, and the guitar part was pretty gnarly. IIRC there's some good tacky phasing at the end as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's so long singe I heard the bee gees 1st that I can't remember a single thing about it, so I guess genesis win this one by default for me.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, I prefer Bee Gees 1st, which I consider the best thing they ever did. Their debut had some of the light psychedelia elements that they never really managed on their next albums.

"From Genesis To Revelation" is OK, but hardly has much in common with what they would do later in any way. The Bee Gees comparision is a good one though, as they did indeed sound a lot like Bee Gees used to do back then.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Every Christian Lion Hearted Man" would have worked just as well on the Genesis album as "The Silent Sun" would on the Bee Gees album, no?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

From Genesis to Revelation has a lot of good songs on it ruined by weird 60's Jonathan King string productions. Some of these show up on the box set in more raw versions, worth hunting down, they're quite unlike any other phase of that band

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the foremost drawback to the first Genesis record has always been the strings. Peter Gabriel's has never sounded more pure than on that material, though.

"Peter Gabriel's VOICE..."

Argh that demo disc on the box set is so frustrating if you read the sleevenotes by tony banks! "oh yeah, we recorded all this other stuff between 'trespass' and 'nursery cryme' but we lost the tapes and shit" For fuck's sake get looking!! I want a good version of "The Light" at the very least!!
