Tell me about Isabelle Antena

I went to see Thievery Corporation Sunday night (spare me the snide comments, please) and their unannounced opener was Isabel Antena. It was just her and a much younger female beat programmer/occasional keyboardist; pretty heartwarming little set. I remember seeing quite a few Antena recs in the racks in the early 80s, and though I never owned one to best of my knowledge, I certainly recognized her opening song. What's her famous stuff?

Funny you should bring her up, I just reviewed the three albums (reissues plus one new) that LTM put out...hold on and I'll find the links on the AMG.

Pretty much any French-pop freaks -- and St. Etienne/lighter side of Stereolab fans for that matter -- should give her an ear.

Pick up the Camino Del Sol reissue on Numero - it's the entire first five-song EP stretched out with bonus tracks galore. Amazing stuff.

I know she did the title cut from Camino, and she said several times "we're playing this 25-year-old record tonight," so at first I thought she might be playing cuts solely from that. But she also did a Henry Mancini song from "The Party" soundtrack. The cut she opened with that I recognized was more in a Lizzy Mercier/Delta 5 vein than anything bossa nova, with Isabel playing guitar. Time to start searching sound samples, I guess...

Check her out supporting Andrew Bird on his upcomming US dates.

Wow, thanks. From her blog:

>The tour, which begins in May, will be a track-by-track replication of Camino Del Sol, peformed by Isabelle, some backing musicians, and a few guests.

That's not exactly the way it went down in Minneapolis.

has anyone seen antena on their current tour? how are they?

they're doing a midnight show in NYC tonight, i'm debating whether it's worth going to. i like 'camino del sol' a lot, but i could see the live show going either way.

This. More music that sounds like it was performed in a closet while people were trying to sleep in the adjacent room, please.

I've been listening to Mathilde Santing a lot lately and I get a similar vibe from her debut EP:
