from an interview in splendid:

Devendra Banhart: Well, if I'm not playing music, I'm drawing. Really. I don't really want to start in the morning with music. I'm like "aaah" and my throat has got cobwebs. So I just draw. I draw all day long. So they blend into each other. When I can't play music, I take a break by drawing. Right now, I have this book that might get published by a French surreal publishing company. And if there is a place that I could drop it off or send it to or a place where you could pick it up, I would love to give you a copy. It's a book of drawings and it's also got a narrative to it.

devendra banhart... influence: 100% kiki smith 0% anything new. very uninteresting "art" completely drawn from kiki smith. he may be all the rage in music but art-wise... not really a powerhouse. i think the only reason people are compelled to him is due to his music-stature. why not spend your time with artists of a more compelling nature like Mark Manders/ Kiki Smith/ Los Carpinteros/ etc... I am not saying that he is not allowed to draw but I think in this instance the pedestal is unecessary.

David Bowie. See the site below. (Although I've seen better paintings by him than these.)

I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about artists who had a strong visual presence/theatrical style.

Chris Mars from the Replacements (makes a living as a painter now)
Stephen Malkmus (sleeve design for several Pavement releases)
Grant Hart (did the sleeve design for Husker Du releases)

Dan Smith. Check those album covers.

Er.. what pedestal? The question was "lets talk about musicians who are visual too," not "musicians who are incredible world-class groundbreaking visual artists." I didn't see any glowing praise in awe of Devendra's stunning art above, just a quote from an interview which confirms that he draws things.

i always liked how sonic youth turned to a wide variety or artists for their covers, though most members also did their own work.

lee has a piece in an exhibition out in brooklyn right now:

the visual stuff ive seen from kim and lee really highlights the sort of ideas they bring into their music. i think the same can be said for someone like syd barrett and especially for eye.

and i think devendra's art works to complete the sort of music hes trying to create as well.

Jon Langford does some great paintings/woodcuts that show up on some of his albums, plus he helped do Great Pop Things, which I really need to get my hands on.

clotpoll -- "Great Pop Things" is brilliant. Is there a thread about it? I found my copy of the book on ebay, and it's worth searching for.
