seriously, this thread was prompted by my recent discovery that john hiatt had a song w/ the same song as one of killing joke's better-known (and all-around better) songs. not really into john hiatt, but i am curious as to what his "love like blood" sounds like and if it's any good.

Don't do it Alex!

Don't give these fatuous fire-dishonouring cheese-monkeys the satsifaction of rising to their paltry and ignoble bait!

I heard "The Wait" on college radio today - it had been some time since I'd last listened to it, and certainly many years since I'd heard it on the radio. Hearing Killing Joke on the radio is an especial treat for me because the things that make them special really stand out when I hear them in between songs by other artists; their attention to detail, and especially to formal concerns. For a band interested in "primal"/cthonic urges, their love of structure is certainly worthy of brief comment. Also remarkable in "The Wait" is the contrast between the willfully "ugly" (picking my words carefully here; not "ugly"="don't wanna hear it" but "ugly"="painting with dark colors and jagged strokes") vocals of the verses and then the cold, grand beauty of the sustained notes in the chorus. I remember thinking, when the song was fairly new, that its schtick seemed a little forced and obvious - the verse parts, anyhow - that tortured vocal saying "you'll all dance" - but now I find the whole thing quite coherent, beautifully constructed.
