Abby McDonald has posted a really quite wonderful new song by a Mystery Girl at Poptext - everyone should go and get it, and then play it lots and love it.

(PS if you happen to know the identity of the singer please don't reveal it here, thanks)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I should note that downloading and playing it reveals the mp3 tags saying who this is. (I am amused.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(At least it reveals it if you play it in a program like Winamp, RealPlayer, etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(Said singer was recently referred to by A Rock Band Personage as being miles better/cooler than every band the NME was hyping these days...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you change mp3 tags?

Also, Ned - you are amused but are you also entertained by it?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(it has apparently been fixed now so Ned is honour bound to silence!)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the tip, I've just changed it to a new, anon tag
I hope!

Abby (abby mcdonald), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Abby's saying it has 'a distinctively ‘British’ pop feel' and that's true both positively and negatively, in the negative sense because it's the type of trebly/brittle bite in the arrangement that goes down gangbusters over in yer neck of the woods but doesn't get much of a look-see in the charts over here (while at the same time not falling into much of the conventional Anglophilic idea of 'hip UK import single' that has defined the term in a variety of ways over the moons). Let's put it this way, it's pretty easy to tell the difference between this and St. Etienne (or if you will Culture Club's "Church of the Poison Mind").

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! i google-cheated and am amused AND entertained!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

someone duct-tape ned.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Would this amuse and entertain you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

if you will

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh baby etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking 'eh' up until the second to last chorus where the cymbals and tambourines start going nuts. If the production was a little less generic bar-bandey I'd probably love it.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

'a distinctively ‘British’ pop feel'

this is interesting (as I just told Abby) because I think it sounds very American - or rather, an American style being done unmistakeably by a Brit. On first listen it's like Xtina doing 'Love Machine' but really it sounds like Javine doing Xtina doing 'Love Machine'.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The way I feel, is that it's not motown-y enough to be American, yet certainly not the brash electro or clean pop sound of successful British songs. BUT that said, it does bring to mind 'Love Machine' which was chart-topping.

Abby (abby mcdonald), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the artist from the tag btw, I've never heard of her anyway so no worries.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

On my fourth listen I only just noticed the horn section going mental after the first chorus!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh googled... yer er uh um it kinda reminds me of that estelle song from a few weeks back but beefier...

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I google cheated and ... wtf? Where'd the range go? This is weird. Wowza. Not a bad tune, though. But... woah.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

this is amazing, i can't believe who it is (i got the mp3 tagged too).

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and while you're there, check out the fabulously weird Max Tundra remix of 'Decent Days and Nights'.

Abby (abby mcdonald), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i just did!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh thats nice like teh futureheads having a bath

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Um. Doesn't the filename totally give it away too?

It's who I thought it was going to be, and it's been played on Radio 1 already (why was I listening to Radio 1? I dunno). Le sigh.

(also slightly dissapointed The Faders song isn't there anymore on that site :-( )

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

JK and Joel in stopped watch right twice a day shocker

M Philip O'Nyman (Ferg), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I know who it is but I still have to wait until tomorrow to listen to it. Really curious.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like a 3rd generation copy of Motown or Stax by someone who only listened to Get Happy and the Blues Brothers soundtrack.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Popjustice have been all over this but this is the first time I've heard it.

I dunno if it's THAT great tho...marginally better than that last Estelle single maybe...perhaps it will grow on me, esp. when I see people going crazy to it at Poptimism or something.

Kerr Ma John (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I say I guessed what this was after this:

"On first listen it's like Xtina doing 'Love Machine'".

I've never heard the song before, though. I am about to download it. Front page of the OMM this month...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Love Machine - The Stray Cats + The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Discuss.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And, yeah, for a supposed single of the year contender, it does sound like an Estelle cast-off.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I googled first. So shoot.

Umm, alright I suppose. Needs the video I guess, for maximum "really?" factor.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's good, but it's lacking something to make it great. Song's too one-chord or somethink. But it is good.

Whoever said it was better than Estelle should get the cotton buds out.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

think this was played on radio one yesterday .. oh yes .. deffo .. Jo Whiley played it ..

its a return of the 80's Big Pop sound ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This was one guess:

"hmmm... at least one black singer, one caucasian, a group of 3 (not 5)... all 21 or under."

And apparently a video will be on her/their/etc website today.

And the MMB tip? Interesting...

Abby (abby mcdonald), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

why is saying "it sounds like Estelle" a pejorative? The last Estelle single was great.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Estelle is great, I was saying that this isn't better than her.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand the fuss about this - it's like a Tom Jones idea of a modern pop song. Which is quite appropriate, really.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

have genesis reformed?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like it okay, somewhere between 'La La' and 'Negotiate With Love' basically.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm does sound like over-produced 2nd rate motown to me.
oh well.

googled it too :) was suprised it was her.

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like it okay, somewhere between 'La La' and 'Negotiate With Love' basically.

Basically, the two best singles of 2005, those two. This isn't as good, but it's still pretty great.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This song sounds like it should come for free with Windows.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

someone email me and tell me who it is! kthxbye

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, Ned as good as gave it away at the start.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I thought this was gonna be about The Shortwave Set.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Marie Osmond, isn't it?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like gender-reassigned Paul Weller/Nadine Coyle's solo debut. The tune is alright but isn't doing the trick because it's also like an above average Mel C song. Maybe I'm not so warm about this because I watched Mad Cows last night with its none-more-Brit-90s soundtrack.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(it was Charlotte Church by the way, even though everyone here seems to have figured that out already)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

So what's the punchline? I don't know anything about Charlotte Church or why this song is supposed to be special. Am I missing something?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 19 May 2005 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the sort of record which makes me yearn for ten years of an aesthetic totalitarian police state where citizens are compelled at bayonet point to listen to Stockhausen, Webern and Varese, just to teach them some dignity.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 May 2005 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yes. Where do I sign up?

(Or do I not get the choice?)

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 19 May 2005 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

this would be the kind of totalitarian police state the likes of which weve never seen. let's try it, really quite novel

Masked Gazza, Thursday, 19 May 2005 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello has a point - this makes the 'Call Me Al' sample on J-Pop superstar Kenji Ozawa's 'Bokura Ga Tabi Ni Deru Riyou' seem Alfred the valet-dignified (OK, I admit Kenji's also much better, but that's neither here nor there, I'll probably YSI it "elsewhere").

The Xtina comments are totally misleading - it's totally GA/Coyle. It sounds a bit better today, but not essential. In fact, I'm wondering if the Gallaghers have a hand in it.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds more like Langer and Winstanley than Xenomania to me - the best thing about this record are the tinny horns which are one of the few bits of 80s aesthetix yet unpillaged (wow, maybe it actually IS the Kick Horns!). The worst thing about this record is that it's called "Crazy Chick" and makes me think of those horrible stationery sets you get in WH Smiths with the sub-Purple Ronnie artwork.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG NEW LADDETTE FEMINIMINIMITTY!!!!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about the record, seeing as how you mentioned Langer and Winstanley, was that it reminded me what a great single "Calling Your Name" by Marilyn was/is.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Xtina comments are totally misleading - it's totally GA/Coyle.

but the thing which jumps out at you is how trained the singer sounds (and obviously Charlotte is, just in a different field) - Xtina is one of the few other pop singers (excluding r&b obv) whose voice has that quality to it. Even Nadine, the GA 'singer', seems to just point her voice at the end of the verse and hope for the best (a v admirable quality in pop, this is not a diss).

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Xtina's (as yet unconfirmed) genetic link to Mariah kinda makes me doubt that.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the end result, n'est pa?

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just sick and tired of inverted commas pop.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck this, recommend me some more Langer and Wistanley (and some actually decent UK pop too).

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

langer and winstanley - umm madness.

but i suspect thats not really relevant here.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking more of "Let Them All Talk" by Elvis Costello, not that Charlotte Church sounds particularly like Elvis Costello, singing wise.

I've never been convinced that "inverted commas pop" even exists, any more than inverted commas trowels or inverted commas windscreen wipers exist.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Pop which isn't proud of being pop.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't get that feeling from "Crazy Chick". I do think it's a fairly shoddy bit of work though.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

'Pop which isn't proud of being pop. '

OTM

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's okay-ish (particularly the tinny horns), and will sit nicely between Shania Twain and "What Car" on Radio 2, but really, am I completely missing something here?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Shania Twain and "What Car" are a lot better than this song, though.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Shania otm.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)
