Frankie Laine: the Rob Halford of easy listening? RAWHIDE!

A girl from my grade school class actually became a cast member of Up With People! in the late 70s and I was like "that still exists?"

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it looks like fancy proto- computer animation but i bet they just held a couple of slinkys together.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

thats a good one! what is it like?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

typical "band recital" music -- "jesu, joy of man's desiring," ellington, sousa. there's also something called "geometrics for band." i'd love to tell you how it sounds, but as i said, i'm turntable-less until august.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i have that Jim Nabors record - strange how the cover is made to look like fabric, like the blank "canvas" for cross stich

and I have several Doug Oldham records I inherited from my grandparents
I have tons and tons of those "church choir scrounged enough dollars together to make a record" kinda things. they're awful and great at the same time

i know. there have to be several thousand out there. i'm on a mission to collect them all!

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

if you actually compile an illustrated discography, i'll buy it.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm considering doing an mp3 blog of nothing but church choir/obscure inspirational records!

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

my granddad was a southern baptist preacher in small town georgia, and they'd go to revivals at other churches, trade off this kinda stuff with other choirs and just generally collect bunches of these. so when he passed away and i inherited all the collection, it was a sort of a sad/happy thing and they're terrible, but kinda great in that they really capture that time perfectly - growing up and hearing small chruch choirs where people really sing with all their heart, regardless of thie vocal ranges - and the cover pictures are hilarious and sweet and awful, but i like them in a way that isn't really ironic. it's more like i can sorta identify, understand and feel comfortable with that relationship

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

JBR, unrelated, but did you get that tape I sent you? Don got his and I always cross my fingers that things i send actually arrive at the right place. i hope you got it. okay, carry on. you know, there was a handmade christian psych discography with pictures that someone put out years ago. it was cool to look at. i wish i had bought one.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i did! thanks, and thanks for the tv guide too! i'd been meaning to write you a proper thank-you note, but these last few weeks were kinda hectic.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll wrack my brain tonight for something i can send you in return.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

JBR - is that indie rock record you're thinking of ... Grenadine's Nopalitos?
