I got intop when I wasn't expecting to, and I have never gotten over it. Being stuck in my head is always a blessing.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic x Infinity. Two intersecting loops making a moebius strip of pop greatness.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

eh?

ace tune mind.

da-da-da-dum-dum-da-da
da-da-da-dum-dum-DA-DA-DA

classic classic classic

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well there's the "Why waste your time? You know you're gonna be mine" loop and there's the "I'm gonna get you baby/I'm gonna get you yes I am" loop and they're twined in and out of each other like a big moebius strip. And the whole song really just loops round and round til you stagger off the dancefloor with sweat pouring down your armpits.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt anyone's gonna say Dud, except maybe the usual couple of suspects.

'Took My Love', 'Such A Feeling', 'Raise Me' also good.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

DAN WHERE ARE YOU?

Utterly brilliant, I was thinking of these guys the other day! I love the picture in the album, they seem so fresh-faced.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

HERE I AM!!!

I thought you were talking about the drum loops, NV.

Bizarre Inc. were so incredibly awesome. Their album Energize is just great.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

plus 'Playing With Knives', duh and the possibly overlooked 'Surprise'

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to remember they had some sort of connection with Altern8, but maybe I dreamt it.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like between this and the Eon singles and other things I'm doubtless but annoyingly forgetting Vinyl Solution was the perfect label there for a few years.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Vinyl Solution vs Suburban Base vs XL Recordings vs R&S Records vs Reinforced vs Moving Shadow vs +8

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, everybody on this thread is OTM, etc.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'd have to say that +8 wins that TS in a landslide

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC, HELLO EARTH? 'Ain't No Love' by Sub Sub beats this though.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hold tight...

http://www.base58.com/images/ultra91.gif

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima that's totally unfair seeing that 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)' beats every song ever! (Although Bizarre Inc get bonus points for not turning into sodding Doves at least.)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the altern 8 connection is that they were both from stafford. two of bizzare inc. are of course now chicken lips and one of them is the emperor machine.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it was sub sub who became doves.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that what Lex said?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, mis reead that. sorry lex.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it might've been to do with Stafford. I grew up a couple of miles up the road in Rugeley. There's bugger all else to do there, might as well make genius records.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't one of Bizarre Inc also do a bit of big beat for Athletico under the guise of Sir Drew ('Let's Get Some Girls' being the highlight of this episode)? I could be wrong about the connection here.

Rave Family Trees would make a good TV documentary...

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

In my Stylus comments on the Black Eyed Peas, I had a rant about how some good came out of Sub Sub's studio burning (like, 2 Doves songs), whereas no such luck had come out of the Peas' studio burning (though theirs was self inflicted stupidity, which is probably why).

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

plus 'Playing With Knives', duh and the possibly overlooked 'Surprise'
-- $V£N! (stevem7...), May 18th, 2005.

yeah surprise is aces. all the singles off that album are in fact.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It was very poppy wasn't it? i wonder what made them decide to go that route. i remember liking 'Keep The Music Strong' when it was out also.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

classic fucking classic fucking classic CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

a schoolfriend of mine used to tell me that the guy from bizarre inc. was his uncle and he now (then) had a kind of religious band/collective and he (my friend) saw them playing and went backstage at the barrowland ballroom.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was always surprised at how well "I'm Gonna Get You" crossed over in the US - it's basically fey US Garage, but I remember hearing it at regular bars and parties at the time and being very surprised. Classic and still works at parties.

"Playing With Knives" is obv one of the all time classic rave tracks, but my favorite is actually "Raise Me [Ascension Mix]" from the album - the sharp synth riff alternating with the toms is completely intoxicating.

I heard they went religious too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't some of them go on to form Chicken Lips?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two of bizzare inc. are of course now chicken lips and one of them is the emperor machine.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Abso-fucking-lutely classic. I think I would lose my mind if I heard this in a club.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

All this talk means I am of course playing the album tonight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was always surprised at how well "I'm Gonna Get You" crossed over in the US - it's basically fey US Garage, but I remember hearing it at regular bars and parties at the time and being very surprised. Classic and still works at parties.

It completely stormed up the R&B/urban and pop charts, too! I remember being completely shocked at that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"WHY WASTE YOUR TIME?
YOU KNOW! YOU'RE GONNA BE MINE!
I'm gonna get you babyyyyyyy..."

Noodle Vague called it as to why it works as a surprise pop success. It's a great pop song reduced down to a certain brute simplicity if you think about it, a killer two-part chorus and not much else vocally aside from the interjections of the one dude. Great stuff!

In listening to the album the track I had underrated/forgotten about most unjustly clearly is "Plutonic." Heavenly synth riff, Sterling Void samples and WOW that's a loud-ass distortobass line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the altern 8 connection is that they were both from stafford. two of bizzare inc.

i spent last friday night at an altern-8 gig in london (sooo good). i dunno about 'i'm gonna get you' but i'm certain 'playing with knives' got played at least about four times. this thread has just reminded me of it all again and i'm a very happy bunny now indeed ;)
oh and CLASSICCLASSICCLASSIC obviously as if it needs to be said any more....

peteflynn (piratestyle), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to read that magazine as well. ha ha....damn me for being so young back then..

good lord...i'm not sure if i would've been thrilled by this or just felt really silly. probably both. would've been nice to have known it was on at least.

ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH SO ENVIOUS

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering what you would say about that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i had been led to believe no-one really liked this song and only had maximum love for "playing with knives". which i found quite potty because "i'm gonna get you" is so evidently one of the greatest things on this planet. it's good to know that everyone else loves it too.

jon dale, Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I realized before hitting my pillow last night that there's someting about the key and cadence of the vocals in I'm Gonna Get You that is similar to the versus of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wan to be With You".

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

verses vs. versus

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i had been led to believe no-one really liked this song and only had maximum love for "playing with knives".

OK, then

TS: Playing With Knives vs I'm Gonna Get Get You

I'm picking I'm Gonna Get You, which seemed to be 1000X more inescapable at the time than "Playing With Knives" was. (yeah, I guess that's an apples and oranges comparison, since "IGGY" garnered attention well outside the rave scene, but still, memories are memories). Plus, THAT CHORUS, OH LORDY. "Playing With Knives" isn't nearly as immediate.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

but it's rather more euphoric.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Boring. Dud. Some of the dance tunes from back then hold up, but this is surely not among them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

altern8 played at bangface, which, for some reason was at medicine bar. i couldnt go though

'i'm gonna get you' is total classic of course, and has dated well i think. playing with knives is good, but, its more like, it has good parts, whereas i'm gonna get you is good all over. i think it was slightly surprising when it came out, it felt REALLY garagey and pseudo-US, very different from their other stuff. but, looking back now, it doesnt really seem so much of a departure. great anyway!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

playing with knives is good, but, its more like, it has good parts, whereas i'm gonna get you is good all over.

This is so completely OTM.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like 'I'm Gonna Get You' that much at it's time. I guess I was so 'I don't like dance music that everyone else likes' then.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish somebody would do some sort of minimal re-edit highlighting just the riff in the first 30 seconds (w/ added bass) ... sounds like the perfect assignment for somebody on trelik (m broom? p ford?)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

this song could use a good cover for resuscitation purposes.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

one of my favourite tracks ever. moebius strip indeed!

Didn't Snuff do a cover of this (on the same record label) under the guise Urine8? Or was that Cubicle (riffing 808 State's Cubik before breaking into Wiggle It).

Shooz (shooz), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

pappawheelie heard it again when rich was djing alldisco/beat club with me no? Swear to god it's been in my head every moment since that night...and I hadn't heard it since it was new.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Hey, nobody on this thread has noticed that what makes this song so great is Jocelyn Brown's original song "Love's Gonna Get You", which is the origin of the vocal hooks- surely one of the most sampled acapellas ever, since it also birthed the "I've got the power" sample used by Snap! and the "yeahhhhh" noise sampled by Moby for "Go". But at least Bizarre Inc made a rad tune out of it, no dis to them, but mostly . . .

Yay for Jocelyn Brown!

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought that Bizarre Inc. should have used the "yes indeed" part too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Jocelyn Brown re-recorded the sample especially for Bizarre Inc! *FACT*

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

OMG PITCH IT DOWN AND DROP IT OVER YYT'S 'WAIT'

you could do this shit w/ any number of bleep/bass/minimal trax and any YYT / pitbull / lil jon production and it'd prob be both mindblowing and redundant

vahid (vahid), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I'd never heard the Jocelyn Brown original til this weekend. Hearing 'I've Got the POWER!' in its original context, just poking its head out the track about 3 quarters in is so eerie and amazing for me. Also there's a part where she sings something like 'It's just velocity!' which also got sampled in a big dubstep purple wow track a few years ago. Anyway, what a tune!

crazy, i just watched this video last night. I used to love this album. At the time I felt like the divide between Playing with Knives and I'm Gonna Get You was so wide, but now they don't seem quite as far apart stylistically.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 20 August 2020 15:45 (five years ago)

I hate hate hate how the Quadrant mix of “Playing with Knives” doesn’t have the hyper-happy “Gotta get up! Got to feel good!” sample. That’s the best part of the song!
