Where is the love for all these bands from my vinyl 12-inch "U" shelf who have rarely if ever been mentioned on ILM?

Fucking hell, how many bands named UFO are there? ;-)

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

At the very least, two? ;)

Well I once had the No Heavy Petting LP by the rock UFO.

United Future Organisation...were they the ones who did that 'Loud Minority' track?

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Loud Minortiy was United Future Org.

Since I'm on a roll today pointing out the Miami Bass connections to your collection...

U-Roy's comp "With a Flick of my Musical Wrist" contains a remix done by King Sporty (aka Noel Williams). Noel went from being a Jamaican street DJ to a Funk producer to Disco to Electro to Bass, being one of Bob Marley's most important sidemen along the way.

He's most known now as the man behind Connie Case's "Get on Down".

Unlimited Touch... They were a disco band right? I Hear Music in the Street?

I like U-Roy. His voice seems to get sampled a lot.

The three stages of UFO.

1. First, primitive Stooge-rock pre or same time as Stooges. "Flying" and "One Hour of Space Music" and "Live" with a song called "Boogie for George!" Big in Germany, which is where they found Michael Schenker for stage...

2. Schenker guitar hero arena-rock that never quite made it as a success in American arenas. Beloved by metal purists. My favorites were "No Heavy Petting" with rollicking piano that annoyed Schenker and "Obsession," where Schenker was getting ready to leave and then...

3. With Paul Chapman. And everyone should find the George Martin -- yep, George Martin!!! - produced LP right after Obsession. They also had a Bruce Springsteen fetish which made for an awkward moment or two. George Martin wanted to get into heavy rock and he took UFO to Monserratt to record it.

And the reformed UFO basically blows, although at times it's been all the originals. When Michael Schenker isn't busy being a homeless person, I think.

I've got an ancient U-Roy 7" called "Hat Trick", which features some nicely cheesy early 70s Moog synth sounds - a bit like Chicory Tip, if truth be told. Same goes for the flip, "Wet Vision", except the synths are even cheesier.

The Shep Pettibone of Unlimited Touch "Searchin' To Find The One" is choice early 80s groove with Smurf vocals... sparse and steady.

And wot, no Universal Robot Band?

Boris Midney's USA-European Connection got some love on the ILX mix blog...

OK, so I have to share this U-Roy single. It came out in the UK on Trojan in 1972. Forget your Sleng Tengs - THIS is where reggae went electro! (The organ at the start of Wet Vision also sounds a bit like the theme from the kids' animation show "The Magic Roundabout".)

George, wasn't there a Frankie Miller cover on 'No Heavy Petting'?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 19 May 2005 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

check also U Roy's "Wear You To The Ball."

Unlimited Touch -- anonymous Prelude Records postdisco act. "I Hear Music In The Streets" is classic, "Searchin' To Find The One" would be c. if the Chipmunk/Smurf voices didn't intrude.

George, wasn't there a Frankie Miller cover on 'No Heavy Petting'?

Yes, and it's one of the great songs on the record. "A Fool in Love."
