EYE First New York solo exhibition "WEYEW"April 2-28Opening:April 2, 6-8pm (EYE is unable to attend the opening.)http://www.transplantny.com/
[Immediate release] contact: Yuki Minami 212-505-0994 [email protected]Transplant Gallery is pleased to present "WEYEW," an exhibition of mixed media works by EYE. The New York show is a sequel to his first solo exhibition "GATAX" which was held at treesaresospecial (Tokyo) last December.
In addition to being a visual artist, EYE has been an influential Japanese musician since the early 1980s. He is the leader of the band, BOREDOMS, who have performed all over the world, including shows with longtime fans Sonic Youth and Nirvana. EYE has also performed as a solo vocalist with Nam June Paik and John Zorn. "Nanoo" and "Donchedelico," collections of EYE's artwork were published in 1996. In 1999, EYE designed the artwork for BECK's album "MIDNIGHT VULTURES" and in 2004, EYE's artwork appeared in Tadanobu Asano's "Tori" film, and in the art book "FAQQ."EYE's art, from his independently released tape jacket designs in high school to his most recent work - the GATAX exhibit's fictitious record jackets - reflects his career as a musician. His drawings and collages have a punk, DIY feel and his influences include Iggy Pop, DEVO, Talking Heads, and Funkadelic cover artist Pedro Bell and Japanese painter Shinro Otake.
The relationship between the cosmos and life is a prevalent theme in EYE's various activities as a vocalist, DJ, sound performance and visual artist. "...Records are spinning at a galactic supermarket's rooftop disco. The endless sound rays are life itself, our life force, and the party goes on and on, the cosmos dances, spins, and the party never ends... " (text by EYE for FAQQ)" For EYE, spinning records symbolize the whole of creation, the gyration of the cosmos. Dancing is the movement of a "life spirit" and DJ play is akin to moving life itself.
EYE uses collage and drawing to represent the world's endless vibration of words and symbols. "While making music is a group project, making art for me is a private activity, an almost half-automatic visualization of my impulses."Themes like "Sun""Bird" and "Light" are sometimes the trigger for his art work, but in most cases they reveal themselves once the work has been finished. EYE's works are in a sense similar to Zen paintings - where expressions of truth are more intuitive than logical. Simply observation of EYE's work is not enough; you have to feel the energy coming from his pieces to truly appreciate and enjoy it.Boredoms recently released their fifth album "seadrum/house of sun" (Warner Music Japan). They will perform in NYC in May.
