Where is the love for all these bands from my vinyl 12-inch "XYZ" shelf who have rarely if ever been mentioned (unless I just never noticed) on ILM?

Zapp as in Roger Troutman or a different Zapp?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

up until recently i only knew X for their cover of roy orbison's "dream baby" but have discovered that their first couple of records are top aussie rock, especially "half way round the world". ian rilen also put out a really great single under the name Sardine V.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, that zapp

xhuxk, Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

dude there's a ton of Zapp & Roger love in the archive. in my search I even saw a post by you!

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well, I guess I never noticed (like I said!) Who has time to search all this stuff?? But who cares, I want to know what people think of them anyway!

xhuxk, Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, fair enough. I'm just always scared of bringing up something without searching for it first and Ned scolding me and locking the thread and stuff.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also a lot of Young Gods love in ILM.

Well, since Ned Raggett is 60% of ILM anyway.. that's a proven fact.

I first heard of them because they had a 12" on Wax Trax where they cut their band name onto their back or thigh or something.. that was the EP with "Envoye!" on it. I've seen the video. It's amazing.

"L'Amourir" and "Pas Mal" was another great followup. Their albums afterwards... well, I'll let Ned fill in the love, or at least link to the love.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, two guys.. one sings gruffly, the other samples metal guitar and drums, and uses a beatbox.. at least, that's how they began. They refined their sound & arsenal & all in later releases.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Three guys, that's a real drummer.

There's lots of Young Gods love here - or at least up till TV Sky, which is quite patchy (and their first album in English). The Kurt Weill tribute album is awesome.

Also, seek out the Al Comet solo material, at least as good as the Young Gods material of the time. And their Gary Glitter cover.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 19 May 2005 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

young gods - second nature.

a lost classic - ok. no industrial styled guitars. but gorgeous laidback electronica.

i love this album - probably more than TV Sky.

are you going to do a thread on all the 12" records where the acts have names starting with numbers? (or did you already do that and I missed it?)

...No Tom ZE, tho? Hm.

Xavion -- Burning Hot LP was a left field favorite in 1984 but I can't remember what it sounds like? Funk/metal/dance hybrid? I was into this right around the same time as Belfegore so my memory files them together but I don't think there's a musical connection.

Tapper Zukie -- Man Ah Warrior LP is 70s-style reggae with a touch of dub. Favorite of Patti Smith & Lenny Kaye. Just listened to it recently, good but not as great as Burning Spear or The Congos.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Much love for Zapp's "It Doesn't Really Matter" and "More Bounce To The Ounce" - also Roger (Troutman)'s "I Want To Be Your Man" and his work on Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay". I've not heard any of their stuff in a long time, but am surprised they're not referenced more often. Cf. Loopzilla/Atomic Dog/Do Fries Go With That Shake-era George Clinton?

The Yachts "Suffice To Say" is wonderful - love the organ sound - but the one I really want to hear again is "Love You Love You". Both decidedly "meta" and cynical.

Is that the Karen Young who did "Hot Shot" or the other Karen Young who blubbed "Nobody's Child"?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the Karen Young who did "Hot Shot"

Yachts - great powerpop band, first single on Stiff, several more + 2 (IIRC) albums on Radar. Guitarist and main songwriter Henry Priestman later went on to play with It's Immaterial and The Christians.

Tapper (aka Tappa) Zukie - Jamaican roots DJ / toaster and producer, a very big fave of John Lydon and Patti Smith; toured the UK supporting The Clash (coming off stage absolutely drenched with gob most nights, poor guy!); signed (by Mr. Lydon iirc) to Virgin's Frontline imprint in the UK and (again iirc) Patti Smith released one of his albums herself in the US. Probably best know for the albums M.P.L.A and Man Ah Warrior and the (was it really a hit or did I only dream that?) single "Natty Dread Upon A Mountain Top".

>are you going to do a thread on all the 12" records where the acts have names starting with numbers? (or did you already do that and I missed it?)<

I worked them into the rest of the alphabet. (But nobody commented on 16 Bit! ) (Which is in the S's, by the way.)

>No Tom ZE, tho? Hm.<

Well, I DO have a CD collection as well, you know. (But don't worry, I won't subject you nice people to any "Where is the love for all these bands from my CD "XYZ" shelf who have rarely if ever been mentioned (unless I just never noticed) on ILM?" threads, I promise.) (Ditto my 45 shelves.) (And ditto cassettes, which aren't alphabetized and never have been anyway.)

X (Aus) is a million times better than X (USA). Praise be Ian Rilen.

Xavion's "Eat Your Heart Out" video logged many appearances on MuchMusic's weekly all-metal "Power Hour" back in the earliest days ('84-85) of that network. Frequent Power Hour host Michael Williams was black (and a onetime Eric Carmen bandmate, apparently) and had an all-encompassing definition of heavy metal that Chuck would've approved of. I never saw that Xavion LP anywhere until '89 or so in some dollar bin.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Zarkons are the band that evolved out of the late 70s "punkish" LA band the Alleycats, I think. They had one song of note that I remember called "Nothin' Means Nothin' Anymore" that was pretty good, but the LP didn't match it.

The Yachts had a song "Not the Yachting Type" that I have on some sampler.
