It's fairly common currency, and understood 'ere in the uk, it's kind of tabloid newspaper-speak, rather than ilx-speak.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i did this in an email at my last place of employment for some reason and it generated absolutely no comment. but then no-one paid attention to anything i said there anyway.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i was unaware-- you uk guys kill me

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahaha Ian OTM

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been on the verge of using OTM or C/D in a couple other sites, and then sense got the better of me, and I realised nobody would have the foggiest idea what I was going on about.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh-tee-em doesn't really sound cool, either.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you do when you find yourself using ILM terminology in real life?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A few days ago I was pissed that people kept asking me stupid questions about how to get to a meeting location ... I got some confused laughter after saying "Get one internets."

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

From thread above:

'there is no "i" in experimental' -- mark s
'yes there is, right before "mental"' -- jess

excellent

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i've used "OMGWTFLOL" outside of ILXor.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and this one ... "oh no! AUDIT!! OH NO!!!"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i've used "OMGWTFLOL" outside of ILXor.

That = The Interweb, not ILX.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But if you actually said it in conversation, you are a dork. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if people in the real world will eventually just start saying "laugh out loud" as opposed to actually laughing out loud.

darin (darin), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife's grandmother used to say "laaaauugh" when something was funny, but not funny enough to actually laugh about.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

omigawdwhutdafucklaughoutloud

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if people in the real world will eventually just start saying "laugh out loud" as opposed to actually laughing out loud.

"LOL" is funny because nothing is as exclusively online and so damn uncool to say in real life as it.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, this is local lexicon here.

"OH EM GEE" "ELL OH ELL" "DOUBLE YOU... TEE.. EFF"

And of course "ELL. EFF. BEE" (Lucky. Fucking. Bitch(es))

and "Double You Emm Ell" ("Whatever.. Major Loser.." there's even a hand signal that goes with it.)

and "EYE CEE BEE WHY ESS TEE!!" ("I Can't Believe You Said That!")

I admit Morley has a lot to do with this influence.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The letters, not to keep you guessing, stand for "oll korrect." They're the result of a fad for comical abbreviations that flourished in the late 1830s and 1840s.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe people will start naming their children "Wtf", "Cornyindiefuxor", or "Starkitty6969@aol".

darin (darin), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What happens when you use 'shockah' outside ILM

At some point in the next week, you will get tazered.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Starkitty6969@aol"

or "[email protected]"!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lol means fun in Dutch, so you wouldn't have many problems there...

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 May 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, you and surprising names...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 May 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have actually found myself saying "roffle" on a couple of occasions. Worse still, the people I was talking to knew what it meant.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 20 May 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

someone laughed at me for (inadvertently) using "hatas" instead of "haters" in a conversation a while back.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 May 2005 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

how do you pronounce 'pwned'?

N_RQ, Friday, 20 May 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Historically:

"Punk rock jubilee shocker!" (1977 Daily Mirror)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"oh no! AUDIT!! OH NO!!!"

I've been using this at least once a year for the last 15-odd years.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

how do you pronounce 'pwned'?

I met a bloke I'd only known via the Internets at a gaming tournament a couple of years back - his first words to me were "Are you ready for some pownage?"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

powned! yes! as in biff-bang-pow?

N_RQ, Friday, 20 May 2005 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Lol means fun in Dutch

Yeah, but not as much used in Belgium as in the Netherlands. Just sounds weird to me.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If I accidently say "shockah" out loud I cover it by turning it into "chaka chaka khan chaka khan chaka khan"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)
