i don't remember the eighties but i started listening to mid-80s thrash in about 1993 when i was about 12 and i used to collect loads of cheap second hand obscure albums by these bands.
it's hilarious to see David Beckham wearing a 'Bonded by Blood' t shirt, but also kind of insulting as well. it may not have been high art, but this was the music i loved as a child.

and Cynic. sort of prog-thrash.
most of these bands are actually still going, they appear at Dudley JB's on an alarming basis.
― Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link
Celtic Frost definitely had their not-thrash moments -- but to express doubt about Voivod! Are you mad?
I guess the question is, looking at your list, do the Earache bunch count?
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link
Yes, let's include the Earache bands. I want to have a huge list of this stuff. But, I'm totally not interested in any current stuff like Gorgoroth or Marduk, Tiamat, etc. Just 80's stuff. You know something funny? I remember when I was listening to all this stuff, I was thinking stuff like, "Man, where can you go from here? This was the last style of music you could possibly invent." Isn't that stupid? Probably the next year Jane's Addiction and the Pixies came out and I went, "Woah, now how did they do that?" Kids. They suck.

Oh! I just thought of some new ones: Malice, Anvil, Armored Saint, Grim Reaper. Those fit into the genre, don't they? (Malice and Anvil are only names I've heard, can't remember exactly what they were)

Cathedral (thrash/doom), Carcass (grindcore/power metal/thrash/death metal), Obituary (death metal, Morbid Angel (death metal), Death (death metal/power metal), Napalm Death (grindcore/death metal), Deicide (death metal), Cancer (thrash/death metal), Paradise Lost (doom metal/thrash), Cannibal Corpse (death metal), Bathory (death metal), Mayhem (black metal), Samael (black metal/thrash), Metal Church (thrash/power metal), King Diamond (heavy metal/black metal), Mercyful Fate (heavy metal/black metal), Anacrusis (prog-thrash), Sodom (thrash/black metal), Exumer (thrash), Blessed Death (speed metal/thrash), Tankard (speed metal/thrash), Destruction (thrash), Hellhammer (thrash), Cryptic Slaughter (speed metal), Thanatos (thrash/black metal), Bolt Thrower (grindcore/thrash).
does anyone actually listen to the modern equivilents of these bands? i flicked through terrorizer the other day and they were going on about radiohead and stuff... can contemporary extreme metal actually appeal to someone who no longer lives with their parents?
No invocation of Lawnmower Deth, though. Let me correct that.
There's a best of Grim Reaper disc now. This makes me cry.
I think some full grown men and women actually blast it on their stereos somewhere, though I can't imagine what these people must look like/be like. A question that seems equally appropriate is "can it actually appear to someone who's entering high schoool?" By 9th grade I remember thinking this doomy-death stuff was pretty silly. I wouldn't say it all exactly "appeals" to me now, but occasionally, I like to put Anthrax, Venom, Celtic Frost or Voivod on the stereo. That stuff really is good if you don't analyze it much and just let the sound hit you. It's catchy stuff! I can't say the same for that whole slew of death metal bands you just posted. I've never been into that crap, although Bolt Thrower is impressively heavy. I actually thought they were a 90s band until now.
Slayer were always 'speed metal', whereas, say, Exodus were 'thrash'.
i always thought speed metal was just a term coined by non-metal commentators (eg nme). i remember on my friend's keyboard he had all these different settings like 'salsa, reggae etc' and he had called 'speed metal' which made this hillarious little casio pseudo- rock sound that actually sounds incredibly similar to all the songs on the Andrew WK album.
i've got all the old LP's by Flotsam & Jetsam, Obituary, Helloween, Manowar, Overkill et al sitting in a corner of my room at my mum and dads house. one day i'll pick up the courage to listen to them again, and mourn for my utter lack of taste as an adolescent.

Well, *duh.* But we admit it. Don't you do that with your friends after fondling your guitars and drumsticks all day?
By the way assholes, speed & thrash are the same thing.
I don't recall calling the tweakers I know 'thrash freaks.'

I'm 22 (full-grown??) and I blast this stuff. I'm a graduate of Radio and Television and I work as an editor at SportsCentre. I have a girlfriend and as far as I know, I'm normal. Now you know what one of us is like.

Exodus is touring, The Haunted are a swedish band that are big, Testament is STILL making music, so is Flotsam&Jetsam. The scene is still big, but its underground and is growing, there are more Thrash/Death-Thrash bands, and with the TOTT hopefully more bands will be putting out new music or do something new like get on a tour or summer festival.
Anyways its not like your sissy, unimaginative Alterna bands did anything for music, all they did is make it ok to suck at your instruments.

It makes me fucking sick, my school is full of them. I like Bay Area Thrash and just Thras metal, it was actually aggressive good music, with bands like Testament with Alex Skolnick who was a true guitar god, you know guys who could actually play their fucking instruments before this sappy, boring, uninspired shit came along. I play the guitar, I am not that great yet but shredding and Thrash Metal is coming back.
