Was Kurt Cobain a fan of Black Flag?

I seem to remember seeing them in one of his lists in Journals, but I can't remember for sure.

Nigel (Nigel), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't quote the source, but I do remember him naming both Black Sabbath and Black Flag as big influences.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Must have been, since Nirvana played some BF covers.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Not surprisingly, "Fix Me" was one of the songs they covered.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"All in all, I think we sound like The Knack and the Bay City Rollers being molested by Black Flag and Black Sabbath."

Does it matter?

Does it matter which album covers look alike?

Does it matter if a band rips off Killing Joke?

sorta tangentially related, this reminds me of this article about the infant on the cover of nevermind. he's 14 now!

GOTH IN GOTH SHOCKER SHOCKAH

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer’s father Rick has since admitted that at the time they thought Nirvana were just another flash-in–the-pan grunge band. “It wasn’t until we drove down Sunset Boulevard four months later and saw Spencer’s picture on billboards that we realised maybe we were wrong.”

Weren't they the FIRST flash in the pan grunge band?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Soundgarden had a major-lable record out a year or so previous, but yeah the dad don't know what's he's talkin bout.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it matter which album covers look alike?

It does to me and some other people. Your point?

Does it matter if a band rips off Killing Joke?

Yes. Notice how Kurt's dead now?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It does to me and some other people. Your point?

Point being, you're an ass. There's no point on posting to a thread only to question its validity just because you have something against Nirvana; you'll notice that even though I don't like Killing Joke, I don't intrude on your threads with pointless comments.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a legitimate question. Why does it matter if Cobain was a Black Flag fan? Moreover, I asked DOES it matter -- illuminate how it might. I wasn't throwing a fucking gauntlet at you. Morever, it's not your thread. Lighten up, jerk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm quite lightened up, thank you; I just don't understand your need to make uncalled for comments on EVERY thread about Nirvana. And it may very well matter to the person who asked the thread for any number of reasons--maybe he's writing an article about them, maybe he's curious.

If we're going to play this game, why DOES it matter to you which album covers look alike? Or is it just a way to kill time?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I maintain that it wasn't an uncalled for question. You're just being needlessly sensitive. And an ass.

Why do album covers matter? Why do lyrics matter? Why do melodies matter? Why do vocals matter? It's all part of the artwork. Some might argue that certain elements are more integral than others, but to each their own.

I didn't invent the cover connections thread, by the way. Someone else started them initially. Your point?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, my point is that you're belligerent. You have invented an online persona based on arrogance and some sort of toughness--fine--so when you ask "Does it matter?" there is a certain amount of implied hostility that again goes along with it.

I'm done here; this is truly pointless.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, my point is that you're belligerent.

Your interpretation. I maintain that it wasn't a provocative question.

You have invented an online persona based on arrogance and some sort of toughness

I've never met you, Ian. I've met a few people on ILM, and I don't think any of them would suggest that my online posts and my personal demeanor deviate at all (ask them, if you care). I have opinions just as you have your (I might point out that it was you who started the name-calling here).

I'm done here; this is truly pointless.

Nice cop out.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And excuse me, Nigel, if you were put off by my response. I'm still curious as to why it might matter, but I'm open to hearing the answer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It is not an assinine (sp?) question, but it's assinine as a contribution to the thread. I'm sure you can work out ways in which it *might* matter--it could have to do with Nirvana's musical relationship to hardcore, or with Cobain as promoter/synthesizer/fanboy of 80s punk/indie (e.g. meat puppets). So if you wanted it not to be taken as questioning the legitimacy of hte thread, you might have offered a bit more of you own opinion. And then, if it doesn't really matter, that's irrelevant anyway, since trivia is well and good, and fun and nice.

666, Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely, as these threads act as a forum, opinions outside of a respective artist's halleljah choir are to be expeced -- nay, encourged, right? Otherwise what's the point?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely. But you did not state an opinion. Or so you claimed when the other guy started challenging you. And if the opinion is "it doesn't matter," maybe it's you who should tell us why. If you don't want to be seen as hostile, that is.

666, Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love pent up sexual aggression funneled through overwrought tit for tats betwixt fanboys.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it's very well known that kurt cobain was a HUGE fan of black flag. his first punk rock concert was a black flag show he went to with buzz osbourne of the melvins.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, you need to lighten up about Nirvana. They had a ton of awesome singles. Too bad they spawned all that shit. Kurt liked good music and was probably a nice, well meaning, but troubled guy. The end!

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Friday, 20 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

For fuck's sake, for a start...EVERYONE needs to fuckin' lighten up about Nirvana. THEY WEREN'T THE MESSIAH, and I'm sure as fuck allowed to have a contrary opinion about them (as is anyone) and if you think it's part of some "persona," you're welcome to e-mail me directly to arrange a meet up to see if it's part of some act. Just because I happen to hold firm opinions on a subject, that doesn't mean that I'm being provocative all the damn time.

Kurt assuredly did like great music...and was a troubled guy (though I fail to hear any lasting influence of Black Flag in Nirvana's work). Whatever. I was just curious how it could possibly matter (being that, y'know, he's dead and everything). I'll admit that I do bristle at the undue deification of Kurt Cobain (just another dead rock star....and not the fuckin' messiah). I'm allowed to hold that opinion. I'm allowed to express that opinion. ILM is is an open forum. Dissenting opinion is allowed. I was not picking a fight.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

FWIW, I own and occiassionally play Nevermind, Incesticide and the much-prized Hormoaning e.p. (and I have that last live album of theirs somehwere).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

you keep asking "why does it matter? what's the point?" well, if every thread here had to matter and have a point there wouldn't be much to fucking read, if anything

Amon (eman), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"They had a ton of awesome singles."

A ton? They only had a few albums. To me, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the best; I would give it a 7/10. I don't mean to make people mad, but this is really my perspective.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, are things only considered singles if they are from an album proper and released as such? Incesticide has tons of pop friendly tunes and there's tons of others: VerseChorusVerse etc

Alex, please slag on M.I.A.

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Friday, 20 May 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would call them "songs," then.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A ton?

Just from Nevermind -- "Come As You Are", "Lithium" and "On A Plain" all got tons of radio play (in my town at least) and are all better than Teen Spirit. I'm pretty sure a couple of the other songs (Polly at least) also got a bit of radio play. That was a ton of catchy songs from one album and even as a high-school sophomore that stood out to me at the time.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if songs are real popular then yeah maybe people talk about them as "singles" even if they weren't released as a single or even if there wasn't a video or whatever. But if you're just talking about a bunch of album trax, I think that's different.

OK - SEMANTIC ISSUE ADDRESSED!

"all better than Teen Spirit" - Well, not IMO.

Tim, this semantic distinction is funny because I feel this way about the '70s single poll, P&J polls, etc. Those polls seem pretty meaningless to me because either they should deal only with real "singles" (in which case who gives a shit) or they should be a vote for best song anywhere for x year (in which case it's meaningless because there are too many to choose from). On the other hand if someone wants to refer to catchy songs that got a lot of radio play and entered the general teenage consciousness as "singles" in the context of a casual discussion, it seems silly to argue.
