to answer my own question, i recommend the knarz releases which are pretty nasty high-frequency acid a la auftrieb / kreisel 99 (except uns verbrennt die nacht which features two live cuts with embarrassing emceeing. thank god heckmann has grown out of this phase by now)

Kopfgeister 1991-2001 is an excellent TPH overview. three discs, covers just about every major project. this set would be essential if only for the magnificent "Blanche" (from the Purple Pleadje 12" on Djax-Up-Beats). i also really like the first Age (The Orion Years - a very trippy, near-beatless tribute to Raumpatrouille Orion), most of the Spectral Emotions material (you need The Labworks Years), and the pre-"Amphetamine" Drax albums on Trope. not crazy about the Knarz i've heard.
