TS: The Jam, "David Watts" vs. Maximo Park, "Apply Some Pressure"

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Jam will win this with an unholy beatdown, but when I heard "David Watts" this morning, all I could think about was the Maximo Park song (which I like a fair bit). THUS: this.

Hmmm...you do know "David Watts" is a cover of a Kinks song, yes?

I still haven't listened to Maximo Park yet (despite owning a promo copy). Would I like?

I actually prefer the Jam's version to the Kinks' original.

Yeah, Weller doesn't seem to really get what the song is actually about, and plays it for straight melodrama, and somehow that works.

The punk rock mockneyisms of the early Jam singles always seemed to me far more affecting than anything that came after.

I did in fact not. I am very very late to the Jam and the liner notes to The Sound Of The Jam just said it was written by Ray Davies. Is it faithful to the original? The Jam version really does sound like the MP song to me.

As for the album, I liked it when I heard it the first time, and listening to it again today liked it even more. They feel like the same kind of alternative to Bloc Party in much the same way that the Futureheads were an alternative to Franz Ferdinand - nowhere near the potential for widespread appeal, but there's a lot of fun to be had in how complex and jam-packed with Stuff their songs are. This is probably an atrocity of an explanation.
