http://www.fopi.net/images/covers/singles/ruxed.jpgI'm hardly a Psychic TV fan, much less fanatic per se... I liked some of the Genesis dabblings in acid house music in the late 80s -- or more to the point, those of his at-the-time cohorts Fred Gianelli (later "Fred"), Dave Ball (Soft Cell, M.E.S.H., etc.), and others. I also liked the occasional dabbling into writing original classic rock sounding gems. "Godstar" from 1984's Allegory & Self being a perfect example, and being a perfect pop song too.
However, not much is said about Genesis and Paula's daughter, Caresse. She, along with Fred Gianelli & Friends (Sickmob at the time) and surely at the encouragement of her parents, did a pretty damn entertaining and great cover of this Hendrix song. Caresse's vocals in particular can't be matched.
I like it because it's years ahead of The Brian Jonestwon Massacre, as far as their stoney, droney rock sound (I am a fan of the Massacre, with exceptions here and there, and yes, I know that this single owes as much to early 60s psych rock and most Massacre does) except the lyricist in this case is a girl with an English accent, coyly reciting the lyrics loudly, slightly drenched in reverb. If Anton Newcombe ever has a daughter one day (which some may consider a frightening thought), maybe little Miss Newcombe may do something similar sometime in the 2010s. In the meantime, I'll enjoy this.
Has this been reissued ever?
