the frustration of listening to love song after love song in hope of finding those elusive lyrics that describe your feelings/breakup/predicament only never to find it

this is very annoying and well, a little disheartening. sure, certain songs describe the mood youre in perfectly, but finding lyrics that do is really hard. you hear little parts of lyrics in some songs that explain what youre feeling really well, but then something in the lyric changes and you cant pretend anymore that that song articulates what youre thinking, even though you really want it to.

this is why they invented techno.

Get the to "69 Love Songs". You'll feel even more lonely once you're finished with it, but at least you'll have covered all of the emotional bases along the way.

i never have this problem--most love lyrics are pretty non-specific.

Hank Williams 40 Greatest Hits. Hank has at least one song that articulates every human emotion.

I usually have the problem of being amazed at how many songs describe my situation exactly. Apart from trivial things like not being a woman and suchlike.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I find that Mark Eitzel's "Mission Rock Resort", despite being extremely specific about place and predicament, works for any breakup situation, even those few that do not involve the ex-lover being accused of having more concern for bleaching shootup needles than for the singer, simply because it a) has the perfect wistful yet angry tone and b) contains the line "all talk is usless; it only makes us seem clever, and nothing changes", which is universal.

Seek ye.

Also, the piano chords forming the main theme are actually the sound of a heart breaking. Really.

Two words: George Jones

rogermexico (rogermexico), Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Alba's problem in the postbreakup phases, to the point of like, really getting Whitney Houston songs far more than she ever intended.

Ditto. The potency of cheap music and all that. Indeed, it makes me feel like a total cliche. Baby, I really will always love you.

this is one of the primary reasons i don't get enough sleep. although i find it more fun than frustrating. that might be since i'm not actually heartbroken or whathaveyou though.

gem (trisk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I totally can't relate to this problem. When I'm feeling heartbroken, at least half of my record collection somehow perfectly articulates my feelings.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 21 May 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

being forced to listen to ryan adams when heartbroken might push me to suicide as escape.

bob wratten is so literal in his lyrics that you can't help but find one that relates to any situation you might encounter.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
revive!

On the ferris wheel
Looking out on Coney Island
Under more stars than
There are prostitutes in Thailand
Our hair in the air
Our lips blue from cotton candy
When we kiss it feels
Like a flying saucer landing

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

im with the camp that starts thinking every record starts to fit my situation and pop music is somehow too potent for me and must be avoided around others. Why am I choking back tears in front of my mom while nelly Furtado is on the radio or Gwen Stefani's "cool" is on MTV? I too feel like an insufferable cliche when this happens.

rogermexico, if those lyrics do fit your mood/situation: great for you!

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing greater and more self-pitying than a nice post-breakup session with some Spiritualized, I've found.
