Cartoonishly awful in execution, Danzig III: When The Gods Kill is somehow brilliant, or at least it seemed so two years ago while listening in the car with my wife. We laughed, and we laughed hard, wondering if Glen really thought people were taking him seriously. He must have believed it, because Danzig's still going. Does anybody care, or is he caterwauling in a vacuum?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: Danzig's cameo on ATHF's Cybernetic Ghost Of Christmas Past From The Future episode.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic for the first three albums. Dirty Black Summer off of III warrants serious volume whenever it comes up on my playlist. I love those throaty howls and and the big exhale in the chorus:

DURDAY BLACK SUMMAHHHHHH! OOOOOOOOOO!

But he seriously lost it after III.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud. Ugh. Terrible!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

First two albums - total classic. Third album doesn't do as much for me, but has its high points. Same with the fourth - there's one song in particular on there that's a totally crushing "God Of Thunder"-style stomp, but much better than that (because KISS are total shit, and always were). The remake of "Trouble" on Thrall/Demonsweatlive is good, too. After that - nothin'.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic to a point, but hopeless and laughable self-parody after that. I'd say everything up unil Danzig 4 is great. Skip the rest. And go well out of your way if necessary to skip Black Aria at all costs.

because KISS are total shit, and always were

Wrong.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Danzig 4 did have "Cantspeak," though, which was deceptively promising.

the first Danzig album is awesome!

latebloomer: B Minus Time Traveler (latebloomer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Danzig I is an undeniable classic. Same with the first video collection.

Avi (Avi), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

pdf otm, though I wouldn't go so far as to say "total classic." III seemed to me the part where he started phoning in his schtick; the debut was good but had a lot of filler. II: Lucifuge was just right - some of the playfulness of the first one, some of the portentious/pretentiousness of the third one, lotsa oomph. "Her Black Wings" is their best song ever as far as I'm concerned. When he starts to sound introspective in the chorus to "How the Gods Kill" is the exact point at which I lose interest.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sistinas" and "Left Hand Black" are two of the greatest things the man has ever done.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha haa! I clicked this thread wondering how long it would take Mr. Rufus to mention the ATHF!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say everything up unil Danzig 4 is great.

true! but i think the first is the classicest for the perfect combination of material and that strange rick rubin production. i saw them open for slayer just before danzig came out and they were great, i think i caught them 3 or 4 times back then.

thanks to my friend katie i've never been able to hear "her black wings" as anything but "whaaaaaale, i'm a humpback whale..."

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks to my friend katie i've never been able to hear "her black wings" as anything but "whaaaaaale, i'm a humpback whale..."

Bahahahaha

My friend simillarly ruined "Mother" for me, changing the lyrics to the perspective of an infant: "MOTHER, DO YOU WANNA SEE ME POOP MY PANTS!" etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

First two albums are two of the greatest heavy metal albums recorded ever - and even better than The Misfits.

I stopped listening after 4, though a Danzig-appreciating buddy of mine swears by that one

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 20 May 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

actually 4's a little underrated in my opinion.

latebloomer: B Minus Time Traveler (latebloomer), Friday, 20 May 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 4 a lot too.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 20 May 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and even better than The Misfits.

Uhhhhhhh.........NOT AT ALL.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, Alex - aren't the Misfits one o' those you-had-to-be-there bands? Only their last stuff still sounds good to me.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Get ahold of Static Age.....it's sheer punk rock perfection. I'm not saying everything the Misfits did was solid gold, but at their best, they were unstoppable.

In Praise of ... Static Age by the Misfits

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I would never - EVER - say anything bad about the Misfits. Don't misunderstand. But I DO think the first two Danzig albums, track for track, are better than anything The Misfits did. MAYBE Legacy of Brutality is a tie. MAYBE.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

just recently got around to buying collection I & II. for the longest time i couldnt part from II, but I has been growing on me for the past month. checking out the first two danzig albums as we speak. what should i pick up from samhain>?

brock (brock), Monday, 23 May 2005 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thirteen by Danzig > Thirteen by Big Star

By the way, can anyone think of two songs with the same title that are as dissimilar?

Heidy- Ho, Monday, 23 May 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

samhain... initium at least. i literally haven't heard november coming fire in 10 years. don't pick up final descent unless you want to hear what amounts to fairly bizarre and sloppy demos for what would become danzig.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite Danzig rumor :

Some punk/hardcore kid is working at a Kids 'R Us in L.A. He's folding clothes, trying to look busy when a frightened, panic-stricken female coworker runs up to him and says "You've gotta come quick! Some biker guy is going crazy in the little boys section!" The kid walks over to the little boys section cautiously, not knowing what to expect, where he sees a very short muscle-bound man with long black hair putting on little boys undershirts in the mirror and then flexing violently, ripping the shirts apart. On the floor, lays a heap of discarded, ripped shirts. He is utterly horrified by what he is witnessing and stands there speechless until he suddenly realizes the man performing this strange shirt-ripping ritual is none other than Glenn Danzig.

Ellis, Sunday, 4 September 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

So, yeah..

I also think "4" is underrated, although i'll admit i didn't really like it too much when it came out. Everything the original line-up did is classic but, yeah, after that fawgedaboudit.

"Danzig 3" is probably their peak, in terms of the schtick, the crooning (Morrison meets Miss Piggy) the songwriting, the playing and the production. That album is just about perfect. I think it's even better than "static age" and probably my favorite metal album of the past 15 or so years.

"Thrall.." ep needs to get more love in this thread too because the 3 studio tracks are awesome, especially "it's coming down".

They really did rock live too, Chuck Biscuits used to hit his drums so damn hard he'd snap his drumsticks every song. Anyone know what he's upto these days..?

I wish they'd finally put the first two video collections out on dvd. The "archive de la morte" one of all the vids from "3" and "thrall.." is ridiculously good. It has everything you could want from a Danzig collection : hair, hot blonds in leather, silly sideburns and facial hair, s&m, the band rocking out on stage, medievel torture chambers, gimp masks, Giger inspired dream sequences, the band standing in the desert attempting to look moody and lil' Glenn kicking the sand trying to look mean.

It also has those foul genital piercing scenes in the uncensored "it's coming down" video which i could really do without.

Ellis, Sunday, 4 September 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to post it to this thread when it happened, but earlier this year I interviewed Danzig by phone and he was a very nice, intelligent, level-headed guy. Didn't yell at me, didn't crunch the receiver in his mighty fists, nothin'. Answered my questions in complete sentences containing multisyllabic words (which my fellow hacks will doubtless agree is an increasingly rare occurrence these days).

two years pass...

I was reading Ferris' book on Reign In Blood, and it mentioned how Rick Rubin followed up Reign with "two under-heralded rock classics: the Cult's Electric (with Wallace) and the first Danzig album."

I always enjoyed the Cult-does-AC/DC album, and love the Misfits, but never paid attention to Danzig's post-Misfits work. I guess I should have, with several folks citing the first three as classics. They were all reissued last year.

the great thing about Danzig 5 is that they run his voice through a DOD distortion pedal so he sounds like an evil auctioneer, then they fired the good band he had before so there are no riffs to distract from the "I understand that White Zombie is popular but I do not understand why" backing tracks

As a teen I loved all three of Danzig’s bands up through III, when I abruptly left most of my metal stuff behind in favor of alt/indie. Have been revisiting this era for the first time in 20 (30?) years. Danzig I still great, II still mostly great, III half great. I just put on IV, and album I’ve never heard a single note of before, expecting a precipitous drop. But actually it’s not bad at all and maybe better than III.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 11 September 2022 20:26 (three years ago)

As Neando says slightly upthread, the first four, Deth Red Sabaoth and Black Laden Crown are all good to great. I would add that Thrall-Demonsweatlive is great if you're already a fan (I really like his version of Elvis's "Trouble"), and Live...On The Black Hand Side is a pretty good live set; most of the first disc is by the classic lineup. If you're a total diehard, The Lost Tracks of Danzig has some more otherwise unavailable material from the sessions for the first four albums.

Danzig 4 did have "Cantspeak," though, which was deceptively promising.

― Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, May 20, 2005 9:40 AM (nineteen years ago) bookmark

When I hosted a radio show in college, someone called to request No Doubt's "Don't Speak", and I played "Cantspeak" instead (hahahaha, so witty I was). To be fair, though, had they requested the Danzig tune, they were going to get Gwen instead of Glenn.

Steely Danzig: Turn Up 'Where Eagles Dare', Neighbors Are Listening (Prefecture), Monday, 31 March 2025 18:08 (one year ago)

While most only think of Glenn as someone who sings about zombies, werewolves and necrophagia (which, of course, he does), he’s also harbored a lot of problematic opinions over the years. Apologists who are citing the Sonnenrad's ties to the occult (something Glenn's always espoused) may get a little mileage out of that. As a longtime fan of The Misfits, however, while it’s tempting to throw that sort of tenuous lifeline to Glenn, I don’t believe the invocation of this symbol means anything other than the worst of its implications, and I can’t say it’s surprising.

A number of years back, Danzig released an odds'n'sods collection of songs that never made it onto albums (I picked it up for his well-intentioned by ham-fisted cover of "Cat People" by David Bowie). Amidst that collection came a song called "White Devil Rise," which also flirted uncomfortably with white-supremacist language. Google it.

I have loved so much of the guy's music, over the decades, but this particular chapter is pretty impossible to really defend with a straight face. I'm not convinced this one isn't going to stick around and haunt him for the rest of his days.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 2 April 2025 15:38 (one year ago)
