Popular Art rock? I dont mind the first single. Will this be my first good Coldplay review?

Jockey, Friday, 20 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's entirely possible. Based on what I have heard, my answer is no, but I leave it to others to decide on their own.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

for what is being claimed as their big daring arty release, the single sure sounds like every other coldplay song

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Power in Blender gave it Five stars. All I know about this person is that he's got a fine first name and that he's probably British.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's possible, but it's not likely.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I said this over at the Associates thread regarding THEIR big daring arty album release -- a minor little album known as Sulk -- with Coldplay very goddamn specifically in mind:

It's also a case where all the stories about the recording and the run up to it, what went into it, what they tried, etc. all make sense. You read PR guff all the time about how some band's third album (which Sulk sorta was if you count Fourth Drawer Down's singles comp as the second) is going to be the Experimental Shift in Style What Is Different or soundbites about 'there were no rules in the studio, we decided to come in fresh' or whatever and they create something with a boring drum loop and keyboard part. Then there's this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope it sounds like the previous two. I like Coldplay just the way they are.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Jockey, are you sure that it's okay for an indie-rocker like yourself to like Coldplay?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it wrong for an indie-rocker to LOVE Coldplay?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the single sure sounds like every other coldplay song

it's worse than that. it sounds like coldplay doing a cover of a coldplay song, if you see what i mean. it redefines the parameters of tedium (although the middle eight's ok).

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Its totally OK for an indie rocker to like whoever the hell they want. I do. Im just saying I kind of dig the first single even though I cant stand most of the band's output to date.

Jockey, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Parachutes was AWESOME, and A Rush of Blood to the Head was slightly less AWESOME but still AWESOME nonetheless, so I'd say yes there is a damn good chance that the new Coldplay record will be good.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The phrasing of this thread's question is pretty obnoxious. Yes, of course it's possible. The single sounds pretty. Coldplay songs in general are pretty-sounding. People, it's ok to like Coldplay. It doesn't have to be a confession.

Wookie Rookie (Wookie Rookie), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am noting a trend toward defending Coldplay lately. In 20 years time will they hold the place in hipsters hearts current reserved for Steely Dan?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell NO.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This is where I reach for my revolver.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've still never knowingly heard a Coldplay song. Apparently they sound like Radiohead ca. 'The Bends'?

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the new single on the radio earlier in the week,....and it just sounded like a thin re-write of "Clocks".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM, Alex.

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that their two albums so far have been great sort of increase the likeliness that the new ones is good too...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The new single is bland city. I don't know why they didn't release that song they did based on a Kraftwerk riff. That was pretty sweet.

guy that says stuff, Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the *name* of the new single?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why they didn't release that song they did based on a Kraftwerk riff.

According to Chris Martin in the latest Q, they sort of decided not to release it because the record company thought it would make a great single. So I guess it was partly an act of stubbornness. Apparently, they have re-recorded it in a rather different version for the album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that their two albums so far have been great sort of increase the likeliness that the new ones is good too...

Yeah, but it's not like they've undergone any sort've radical re-invention. Why would anyone really need a third album by Coldplay if it's just going to be more of same?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would anyone really need a third album by Coldplay if it's just going to be more of same?

If you love red wine, do you stop drinking red wine just because you've already tasted it, "been there, done that", and from now on, you want to try other stuff even though you love red wine?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I will drink more red wine if you tell me the name of the single. I can't be arsed to look it up. Indulge me.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Red wine comes in a dizzying array of different varieties, though. Coldplay, conversely, don't seem to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That dizzying array of different varieties in the music of Coldplay is called different songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

For the purposes of discussing Coldplay, I feel it would be best if we replaced "red wine" in the original analogy with "bucket of warm spittle".

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That dizzying array of different varieties in the music of Coldplay is called different songs.

Dizzying only in their similarity to each other.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!

New single = "Speed of Sound"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I located it and listened. This takes Coldplay into Dee territory--it could have been recorded in 1985 and played on KROQ--80s synthpop. Not bad,but the earlier stuff had more emotional rawness to it as opposed to the big boom boom sploosh drum echo farm.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like The Speed Of Sound, but there is a rather unnerving resemblance to Clocks. This was a very difficult album for them to make, though, and with that kind of success so quickly in their career, I don't blame them. If this one falls a bit flat, maybe they'll bounce back next time.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is it possible that the new Coldplay disc is good?"

Of course. As much as I'll spawn a monkey out of my ass.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I am noting a trend toward defending Coldplay lately. In 20 years time will they hold the place in hipsters hearts current reserved for Steely Dan?

i think theres something in this. though ive often found the criticisms of coldplay to ring sort of hollow, like the hatred for them seems almost forced.

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Trust me, it comes natural. I think this is most probably they seem the quintessential student type band to me: something only university students (can) like. I have an allergy (or jealousy) towards anything that is vaguely academic or related to it.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Trust me, it comes natural. I think this is most probably they seem the quintessential student type band to me: something only university students (can) like.

Sounds like a positive thing to me.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I am noting a trend toward defending Coldplay lately.

yeah i agree! why is this so? they seem as bland as ever to me.

i have to disagree on the uni student thing.... uni students that i know (which is quite a lot since i am one) tend to deliberately steer clear of middle of the road stuff that's played on those 'adult contemporary' radio stations that people have on in their office

gem (trisk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Coldplay, along with Travis and Keane, represent a considerable increase in quality on the adult contemporary stations. I mean, replacing Celine Dion and Mariah Carey with Coldplay or Keane is like replacing a bad Danish Jolly Cola with a vintage wine ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

... replacing Celine Dion and Mariah Carey with Coldplay or Keane is like replacing a bad Danish Jolly Cola rancid urine with a vintage wine artificially flavoured water ...

I haven't hated them yet, but if the new single is any indication of what's about to be on permanent rotation on Radio&TV for the next year I could start!

They may just have crossed the line from inoffensive but ignorable to actively irritating for me. The 'melody' in that new one is dilute by anyones standards, the lyrical content seemed equally trite and shallow. Not so much a comeback as a feeling of "are they taking the piss now?".

Maybe other people just saw this coming & cared more about it.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 21 May 2005 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to think of it, Mariah has put out records far more enjoyable than the new Coldplay single :-O

Maybe not many but some.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 21 May 2005 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The new single is bland and off-white crap. I have very low expectations for this one -- "Rush of Blood" was such a bombastic letdown after the gladblazing glory of "Parachutes". Yes, I am unapologetic.

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 21 May 2005 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm left wondering how many albums Alex feels AC/DC, the Ramones and/or Motörhead should have put out before packing it in.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like a positive thing to me.

If you like faux-intellectual bland crap. It's like Ikea.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In order to feel more justified in my commentary, I went and found the single...and it's a bland, accessible pile-o-shit.

As a result, I stand by my instinctual answer to the thread. No.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the new single on TOTP (name?) and (gulp) it's fantastic! Who'd have thought..

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them play it last night on Saturday Night Live, and liked it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Found a copy here at work this week. The track "White Shadows" isn't too bad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone mentioned that the track "Cold" shamelessly rips off the main hook to Kraftwerk's "Computer Love"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Whoops, never mind....to quote the liner notes:

X5 contains elements of the composition "Computer Love" by Kraftwerk

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

I thought the song was "Talk" rather than "Cold."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Oops, you're right. Apologies.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

I always liked Coldplay prior to this album, and I thought Speed of Sound was a good single. But X&Y has done nothing much at all for me, despite my best endeavours to like it.

So in the context of this thread, I really thought the new disc WOULD be good, but it seems to be lacking the melodic flair and spark that I've enjoyed in them previously. Even the version of "Talk" on the album seems a bit meh compared to the pre-release one that got leaked.

Bill A (Bill A), Friday, 24 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh good! A Coldplay thread revival :)

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 24 June 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

X&Y is much better than i could have hoped for. White Shadows, Fix You and A Message are the best songs Coldplay have written (apart from Careful where you stand, the bside to Shiver which remains my favourite). Minor gripe, with the album running to 63mins it could have done with a bit of editing.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

It's much better than I'd expected it to be --- but am I the only one who has an excetptionally hard time discerning one Coldplay track from the next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

That isn't necessarily a put-down. Many of my favorite bands -- the Ramones, the Wedding Present, Motorhead -- also serve as ample targets for that same accusation.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)
