White music that a lot of black people like vs. black music that a lot of white people like

Inspired by the "blacks don't like the doors" thread or whatever it was. I'm just wondering if there's a common thread among the white music that tends to be more popular in the black community, and vice versa. One thing I seem to notice is that a lot of the white bands that tend to do this tend to be very tight musically - Average White Band, Steely Dan, the Bee Gees, Queen's crossover hit (Another One Bites the Dust), etc. But I also noticed that a lot of them have singers that are very stereotypically "white" sounding. I'd also guess that the black music that tends to be most popular with white people tends to fit certain preconceived ideas of black autheniticity -- from stax soul all the way to hardcore rap. I'm sure there are counter-examples though -- Michael Jackson maybe, or Stevie Wonder.

if you wanna venn diagram this out, the amount of white music that only white ppl like, and the amount of black music that only black ppl like, added together, is MUCH smaller than the 2 categories than you've set up.

ie black/white music that white/black ppl like = pop music innit, regardless of all the racial politix going on otherwise.

xpost haha yeah well this is my 1 post and then NO MORE.

but the vague generalizations that the question takes as given are stupid and innacurate.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 May 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't answer this question until the following terms are clearly defined: "black community", "black music", "white music", "white people" (ie, never).

I've noticed that lots of white people seem to dig dido, and also bad brains, and also lonnie donegan and eric clapton and also p-funk and also outkast and eminiem, which is weird.

because none of them are your typical black crossover artists.

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, this is a totally answerable question. THE GLOVES ARE OFF!!!!

Most of the white dudes I know who are really into 'black' music like one record a whole, whole lot: it is called "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back."

Other white dudes I know really like "Call Me" and "What's Goin' On," (I really like these), and a lot of the same white dudes really like anything 'black' that's appeared on, say, the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino film (not so much for me). The "white dudes" in question are mostly college-educated 'hipster' type white guys who, if you were to look at the records they own, maybe 5% of them would be made by black people. These people might include:

- Robert Johnson
- Michael Jackson
- Miles Davis
- John Coltrane (+ other jazz greats etc.)
- A Tribe Called Quest
- De La Soul
- Wu-Tang

etc. Notably missing from what these people like is modern-day R&B (e.g., John Legend). Maybe they have Konono No. 1 in there too, and the Motown Singles on their iPod. So that is my answer for that particular slice of the 'white' demographic. I have no idea, for example, what frat boy white guys listen to when they listen to 'black' music. (Ying Yang Twins, probably).

As a white guy I'd be really interested to hear what "white" music is the African-American equivalent of the omnipresent "Nation of Millions."

The Wall, Led Zeppelin 4, Let It Bleed, Aja, Dark Side of the Moon, The White Album, or Astral Weeks I might venture if we're talking about older stuff. Maybe The Joshua Tree or Blood Sugar Sex Magic for 80s/90s. Recent: something by Coldplay or John Mayer

I know more white dudes into black music than I do black dudes into white music, but one of the biggest fans I know of the Wedding Present (arguably the whiteist, most funk-free band on the planet) is a big huge black gent named Shawn, so go know.

There are always exceptions to the stereotype. I mean, I would be less surprised hearing that Condoleeca Rice was into Christian country than hearing she was into gangsta rap.

Condi Rice Fun Fact #51: teenage member of Charley Pride fan club.

actually, pace Dr. Rice, the answer here would be "Classical Music."

"The blues is white music. Most "free jazz" is white music. All the musicians know it, everybody in the ghetto knows it because THEY be boppin' to James Brown and Stanley Turrentine; don't own Muddy Waters albums, much less Robert Johnson, and 98% of 'em never heard of Albert Ayler. My music was at least 70% white - if I'd played what black people wanted to hear at that time, I'da been spectacularly unsuccessful in the hip rock superstar world, and if I'd gone down to the Apollo Theatre and played what I played at the Fillmore, I probably woulda been laughed off the stage."

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you dialed my number
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you care

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you say you love me
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
And I don't think it's fair

I know why you dialed my number
I know why you say you're mine
I know what you're doing,

And it's not, gonna work, this time (2)

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I can never sing in that key
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
And you're the one to blame

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you can't forgive me
I know why you're singing lost love
The lyrics haven't changed

1-I can recognize the symptoms
You should know I've changed my mind
I know what you're doing
And it's not, gonna work this time
Hey hey hey, said it's not gonna work this time...

I know what you're doing, baby
I know why you call my name
I know why you say you love me
but I can't say the same
