What impressions about the musical taste of people in other countries have you formed from looking through their mp3 folders online?

I have not been about this business for all that long, so offhand I can't think of anything, except maybe that East Europeans like downtempo more than they should.

You can just report impressions. They don't have to be accurate. (But maybe this is a dangerous invitation to generalize about other cultures on the basis of minimal evidence? It is, but inevitably someone else will come along and say, "That's not true, I've seen more Japanese psychedelia in folders belonging to people in Chili than in the collections of people from anywhere else on the planet!")

I havent looked at enough to get a good feel for what kinds of tastes are developed but i'd imagine that theyre almost as diverse as American/European tastes.

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh what a crap spelling mistake (can't I believe it was just a typo? if I were more awake I don't think I would have written that. . .)!

Have never checked out this, but here in Europe we have the Eurovision Song Contest, which every year hints about Eastern Europeans having crap taste...

Italians did a LOT of coke.

Almost as diverse, but ever so slightly less?

Yeah, I wasn't sure if that was meant as an ironic swipe at what he thought my assumptions were, or what.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, a delicious minefield...

I can only report, entirely uncontroversially, that music produced locally to the user is conspicuous in many lists, such that, for example, fellow antipodeans often easily identify one another.

Europeans love trance hahahahahahahahahah

Hey Gear! Sure, they have American Idol in the U.S. as well, but what does that say about American tastes, and should that speak for the American indie scene as well? I for one don't think so, buddy. I wouldn't write Eastern Europe off quite yet.

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 21 May 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Nagnagnag, I say "almost" only because the "other" countries (as ambiguous as that is) probably have less access to tons of different types of music because of less technology available. I would imagine that Americans and Europeans have the most people that have access to the internet then the rest of the world by far. The internet of course isn't the only way to find eclectic music but its basically my only source and probably the best, thus my point of view.

Larue, I assumed it was a typo I was just giving you a tough time. As far as Eastern Europeans go my best friend is from Slovakia and his parents have CDs all over the board. Lots of Beatles yet a lot of backstreey boys and madonna and NOW comps. I think I remember some Simon and garfunkel too.

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 21 May 2005 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, my school is like half eastern-europeans, and freom what I've seen they like their trance. . .

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Jena, that's Geir, not Gear!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh damn, my bad! Someone should start a thread on Gear vs Geir though. As per thread topic, does anyone actually look up the ip addresses of every person they browse, because that's kinda creepy.

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I can spot the British kids usually. I mean it could've been an American but usually when you see bands like Cleaners from Venus and other cult stuff you gotta go with your instincts.

The people with the BEST rockabilly collections tend to come from Spanish-speaking countries.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you tell where people are from? Do you talk to everyone you download from?

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You can tell by looking by the music they have in their folders! It's a close circuit (baby).

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Closed circuit I meant, damn.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just gonna ask this right now, so Momus doesn't have to, what are the Japanese kids listening to?
