Have we done this before?

Some artists straddle genres, tho'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Especially Killing Joke.

Maybe we have to make some kind of subgenres or something.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And some artists elude classification entirely....for example, how would you categorize Bowie? Simply "rock"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth, Aja, I'd call Killing Joke post-punk and leave it at that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't some people call him "Glam Rock" or something like that?

For what it's worth, Aja, I'd call Killing Joke post-punk and leave it at that.
-- Alex in NYC (vassife...)

I told someone Gang of Four was post-punk. I think maybe it fits more towards them than KJ, but I don't know.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have favourite genres more than I have favourite bands/artists. So this would be tough for me.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gang of Four is Post-Punk (if not definitively so). So are Killing Joke (though they're been called everything from punk to goth to industrial etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really like the calling them goth and industrial just doesn't really fit anything, except maybe the stuff on Extremeties and maybe Pandemonium.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's do stop talking about Kililng Joke here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. OK I'll be brave and start. I'm gonna skip stuff like grindcore, opera, european improv, funk, drone, disco and bluegrass, because I really don't have 'favorites' in those genres.

and this list is off the top of my head.

Classic Metal: Black Sabbath (duh)
Modern Metal: Lamb of God
Jazz: Albert Ayler and Rashied Ali (tie)
Country: Louvin Brothers
Reggae / Dub: Keith Hudson and The Congos (tie)
Folk: Incredible String Band
Prog: Gong and Emtidi (tie)
Hip Hop: DJ Screw

The 'Roj, Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of these genres I don't like much, but still trying:

Prog: Genesis
Pop (in the traditional sense): XTC
Rock: Depends on how wide the definition is but I guess David Bowie qualifies in a way
Synthpop: Depeche Mode
Indie: Blur
Punk: The Clash
Postpunk: The Cure
New Wave: Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Country: Gram Parsons (in all of his various guises)
Reggae: Bob Marley & The Wailers
Classic soul: The Supremes
Soul: Stevie Wonder
Hip-Hop: Tupac Shakur
Jazz: Weather Report
Metal (in general): Van Halen
Disco: Donna Summer
AOR: Steely Dan (OK, not quite AOR...)
MOR: ABBA
Easy Listening: Burt Bacharach
Manufactured mainstream pop: Bananarama

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Before this becomes unwieldy, could someone (thread starter or otherwise) just come up with a list of, say, 10-15 semi-agreed upon major genres before we veer into insular psychosis? I mean, I'm as curious as anyone else to see what your speed garage or dancehall or power metal choices are...which is to say, not at all.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 21 May 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit I can't believe I forgot:

Blues: Washington Phillips
Garage Rock: anything Billy Childish-related and Jackknife (tie)

Geir likes Pac?!

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I do indeed like those two albums he released before his death, yes. I am quite fond of the mid 90s G Funk sound, which reminds me of some great early 80s stuff, and I think he did it better than anybody else.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the seventeen albums since his death?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorites are Having Fun With Tupac On Stage and Tupac Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas. The other 15 are expendable.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanksgiving With Tupac was pretty good.
