Punk Rock Box and Retro Bars, anyone?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

cbgb has sucked for years... landmark my ass.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

are you saying CBGBs thinks it's chocolate when it is actually chewing gum?

john'n'chicago, Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

now if they'd only start booking artists like annie...

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in the day there was a heavy metal coverband club -- Great Gildersleeves -- next door to CBGB. Typically perverse, PiL even played there in the early 80s. So why isn't THAT spot a landmark?

Down on the corner of Bowery and Dee Snider Place...doesn't have the same ring of authenticity I guess.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the way to save cbgb would've been for the club to, like, pay rent all those months/years when they didn't.

Is there anything worth saving other than that awning? It's a classic awning and someone should save it. It shouldn't be that hard to find some place to put it. Other than that what's the fuss?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Walter's right. Put the awning in a museum and call it a day. Either that or get new management and book really good stuff instead of any punk band that sends a demo.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Serious question: I notice that both the CBGB and OMFUG logos are copyrighted. How much of a cut does Hilly get on merch (T-shirts, chocolate bars, etc.)? And why isn't that enough to pay his back rent?

The chocolate is so punk that as soon as people agree that it tastes good it turns bad so it doesn't appear to be "selling out"

To make it a REAL CBGB bar, it should be one good candy bar packaged with four bland, mediocre other bars. And you have to eat the other four bars before getting to the one you really want.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's not, it's a yuppie hellhole run as a caprice by a big-time PR guy and his wife; all they do is repackage a couple of already-popular chocolates (Jacques Torres and some other kind) in their trademark wrappers. They're doing a much brisker business in t-shirts (inscribed "chocolate boy" and "chocolate girl").

Wait a sec: a puffed-up empty brand that makes most of its money on t-shirts... how did i not see the connection before?!

For more than 30 years, the eternal downtown nightclub has with ragged pride, served as the incubator for much of the punk and art-rock which came out of New York over the last thirty years including The Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie and The Talking Heads.
