She likes Elliott Smith, and Belle & Sebastian and some pop country, the White Album, and Beck and Stereophonics (i think; not stereolab. or stereototal. stereosomethin else.) and the Magnetic Fields, and probably some other stuff i'm not informed of.

So far here are artists I'm thinking of:
palace/will oldam
marissa nadler
michael hurley
gram parsons/the byrds/burritos
tyrannosaurus rex
diane cluck w. jeff lewis "the river"
neil young (something from Harvest or After The Goldrush)
pearls before swine (maybe?)
thirteenth floor elevators (maybe?)

what do ya'll think? any song or artist nominations welcome. (FYI: she was fairly disinterested when i lent her In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and The Olivia Tremor Control, but that was probably a year or two ago.)

Given that their thread was just revived, the Sundays, maybe?
Something from 'Nashville Skyline,' or maybe "Time Passes Slowly"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the Go-Betweens! "Spring Rain." "Streets of Your Town."
Simon & Garfunkel, "Fakin' It" or "The Only Living Boy in New York."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon & Garfunkel is a good choice also. If i put a dylan track on I might put on something more electric/rock stylee; I don't know. I have until.. memorial day weekend.

sufjan stevens

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't his music weirdly christian? i think she's an atheist; I don't know. that might bum her out.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How about something from Pink Floyd's Meddle?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hayden - "bass song"
badly drawn boy - "the shining"
arcade fire - "tunnels"
cat power - "iron heart"
camera obscura - "keep it clean"
mirah - "cold cold water"
okkervil river - "okkervil river song"
final fantasy - "the dream of win and regine"

sufjan talks about god in places, but only a bit. it's way overblown (certainly not much more than dylan, and less (i think) than leonard cohen).

Sean M (Sean M), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

How about something from Pink Floyd's Meddle?

This is a good suggestion Especially because her younger sister (10, Jeanette) was singing parts of "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2" (or whatever), the last time i was home.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't his music weirdly christian?
Not especially; while the songs have a spiritual bent and Sufjan himself is a Christian, you'd have to be told to notice a "weirdly christian" influence.
Are the White Stripes too obvious? Also Willie Nelson.

Simon & Garfunkel - "America"
Grandaddy - "Summer Here Kids"
Mercury Rev - "Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp"
Flaming Lips - "Race For The Prize"
Undertones - "Teenage Kicks"

something off the Raincoats first album

lemin (lemin), Sunday, 22 May 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what a 13 yr old wants to hear, but I'd definitely put some Kinks in there. Try Australia or Come Dancing.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 22 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. Annie's fun if you want some techno on there. Also, you're the best cousin ever. I wish my cousins had given me Olivia Tremor Control when I was 13. The only memory of them and music is, "Yeah, I like Creed, too."

WillS, Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Early R.E.M.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the chills - heavenly pop hit

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Cat Power is a good call here, something recent. Maybe Bright Eyes or The Microphones too.

Ogmor Roundtrouser (Ogmor Roundtrouser), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Baptist Generals - "Going Back Song"
The Decemberists - "Grace Cathedral Hill"

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd suggest something by The Clean and/or the Wedding Present.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Wedding Present, "2, 3, Go" and R.E.M., "Perfect Circle."

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 22 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe one of Juliana Hatfield's mid-tempo rockers? ("I Want You To Want Me") or if you're willing to go darker "Choose Drugs" is a beautiful mostly-acoustic song.

Aislers Set - "Emotional Levy" "Through the Swells"

Wilco - "Jesus, Etc." "Kamera"

the Boss - "Used Cars" "Johnny 99"

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Nick Drake here yet. Obviously some Nick Drake.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Incredible String Band

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Blondie - "Rip Her to Shreds" - it a teen girl anthem! Well, in a twisted drama kind of way...

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 22 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My cousin showed me Jeff Mills/My Bloody Valentine/DJ Shadow/Stereolab/Aphex Twin etc. when I was 10. It's awesome thinking about that. Had a big influence on me too.

I'd suggest pretty much most Yo La Tengo. As well, Galaxie 500, Jens Lekman, Mojave 3. . .
