Hey everyone from NJ.

I wanna start a Crazy Band. I'm a Guitarist/Singer looking for a Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer and anything else that sounds crazy.

Influences: The Fall, DEVO, B-52's. Ex Models, Wire, and a whole lot more.

I'm 18 but any age is cool. Male and Female. Any Species.

If you're the Coolest Ill Na Na from New Jersey then please email me.
[email protected]

I'd put my number but I don't want people harrassing me.

You really need to put the most important piece of information, North or South NJ.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 22 May 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I only wish I was a cool ill na na.

Ha ha ha. If you're in jersey and want to start a "crazy band" people will think that you mean one of those bands that sounds like "emo AND hardcore".

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Sunday, 22 May 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hemo?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I know Darby.

I hope that it isn't. This whole state is filled with (bad) Metal cover bands or (horrible)Emo shits.

I'm just looking for Cool Ill Na Na's. You know what I mean?

P.S. Hehehehe, Ned Raggett posted on my post. It's an Honer, Sir.

MichaelCostello1 (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 22 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I dunno. Is your band gonna be like ... real crazy? R U certain now? Like wild freaky beatniks or the Fonz?

Now, you can't spell "honor" to save your life, so you must be like a real crazy rock and roller (40 years after the fact). Rock on!

Bill Haley sans Comets, Sunday, 22 May 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope that it isn't. This whole state is filled with (bad) Metal cover bands or (horrible)Emo shits.
At least when I was in high school, the two bands my friends had wanted to be grunge. Bad 18 year old grunge is not too painful to listen to- they would use such crap fuzzy microphones that you had no worries of ever understanding a single lyric.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a New Jersey in a different country?

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There's only one Jersey shore, so I vote no. The shore is U&K.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 22 May 2005 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well there's a Jersey, England.

"Crazy Band"

http://www.sonymusic.com.tw/intl/crazytown/crazytown-b.jpg

Amon (eman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

are you interested in...Crazy Rhythms?

c'mon, you're really one of the Feelies trying to reform the band to cash in on the punk/post-punk revival right?

I was in such a typcial NJ band. We were called Mosaic. The guys in the band were super into Faith No More, Rage Against the Machine, Grunge etc. I joined later and played sampler. We covered Karmadrome by Pop Will Eat Itself. We opened up for Animal Bag (the band playing in the opening credits of My So Called Life!) at Club Benè in Sayreville. We also played at Obsessions, a teen night-club.

I met Dave from Native Nod(now w/ Ted Leo) around then but we weren't one of those cool NJ punk bands, just a bunch of ex-metalheads and their sampling buddy Dan. Maybe if we played our cards right (and got half the band to cut their hair) we'd be on DFA, but it wasn't in the cards. Actually, we were really terrible, but it was fun. After seeing Meat Beat Manifesto in concert, I started wearing a mag-light flashlight on a shoe-lace around my neck so I could load samples in between songs and see what I was doing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 22 May 2005 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

We opened up for Animal Bag (the band playing in the opening credits of My So Called Life!)

Oh good lord, them. Somehow I ended up with promo copies of their two albums, which I immediately pulverized.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, club bene.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Club Bene. I saw 24/7 Spyz there.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Club Bene. . .hand't thought about that place in years. Or Obsessions, for that matter.

Now, someone will mention the Court Tavern - just watch.

JAS, Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

please also note that when I say "opened up for" I mean, we played, then like 3 other bands played, then the superstars Animal Bag showed up. Sorry we never made it Philly, Maria!

That was about as south jersey as I'd get, and we almost didn't make it as our guitar player, leading a 5 car caravan, got into a fender bender as we were getting on the highway.

I did go to City Gardens once. Excuse me...Shitty Gardens. I saw Meat Beat Manifesto and 808 State!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

motion to turn this thread into a discussion of NJ rock clubs...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

motion granted!

hamilton st. cafe! which i don't like very much but my band played there several times!

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 22 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

what about that house on louis street? i remember seeing lots of decent shows there.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 22 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i've really only been to a handful of these venues:

hamilton st.
birch hill
garfield vfw
augh, probably two or three others i don't remember

i have never ever been to the cove. nor to any shows in anyone's house. (i should write here that i really fucking can't stand the njhxc scene shit)

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 22 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

also, various churches

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 22 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rat Trap, Haledon, NJ

Shitty Gardens --- saw an excellent Killing Joke show there once. And MBV/Dinosaur Jr. loud as f*ck.

Ha! Club Bene with the live Uncle Floyd Experience. Didn't Howard Stern also do some shows there?

Mmmoooothers !(Wayne, NJ)

stop me now.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 22 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw Pinetop Perkins at The Court while I was at Rutgers. Plus many local bands, some quite good (c.93-95).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 22 May 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, you guys are all so punk rock! Other then playing the aforementioned venues, and seeing Duran Duran at the Brendan Byrne arena (sorry...Continental Airlines Arena) I never went to any of those places, never even went to Maxwells untill I was in college.

I did see a friend perform at Something Else, the diner/youth performance space in Montclair, and many a battle of the bands at the local JCC(ex-YM-YHWA)

TS: North Jersey vs. South Jersey

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 22 May 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

north all the way

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 22 May 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

North Jersey.

Chilltown, P-Town, Brick City. You know.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha that was fun!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i can see how people would dislike the whole njxhc scene. also, let's not forget TERRACE CLUB in this thread. favorite place to see shows growing up!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, where does new brunswick / middlesex county fit in? thats more like, central jersey, dude.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

that's south dude, sorry. Only like, the top 2/5th of Jersey is North Jersey. Actually, not even the top 1/5th, because that's like, New York State. Just the second 1/5th from the top. Actually, just Essex county.

I'm just having fun, you know. Hudson, Union, Morris and parts of Somerset county as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

SOUTH? sorry man. thats central.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

of all the east coast-centric threads on ilx, this is the one that really makes me wish i lived out there.

g e o f f (gcannon), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, Sussex county is also North! My parents just bought a house in Sussex a few months ago which is a big change, they used to be closer to Morristown. There is nothing much up therebut grass and McMansions and a few lame strip malls.

of all the east coast-centric threads on ilx, this is the one that really makes me wish i lived out there.

Geoff, what are you smoking? NJ is getting on a 4 lane highway to drive 1/4 mile to get milk, huge malls, traffic traffic traffic, obnoxious boring people with weird accents, miles of subdivisions, and office parks stranded on highways. The redeeming features are pretty much good diners and proximity to NYC. That's it.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 23 May 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

easy...I was teasing, being extremely Essex-centric. Looking at a map, Trenton is "central" Jersey as well, but it sure feels south! I was also implying that Sussex county is more a relative of New York State and the Poconoes, and not actually North Jersey. That North Jersey means being 30 minutes from downtown manhattan. It's all in jest, of course.

lyra, you are crazy. see:

defend the indefensible: new jersey

for all the NJ defendin' you need.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 May 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, and I even posted on that thread. Heh. That did remind me that there are kickass Italian bakeries in northern NJ.

Since I've derailed this thread from NJ night clubs, I think that the first concert I went to sans-parents was something at the Common Grounds coffee house in Summit. My friend DJ's band played at Obsessions a few times.. I think I even still have one of their t-shirts. I'm blanking on the name of the place we used to go out near Chester, though.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 23 May 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Uncle Joe's in Jersey City to thread.

Joe's may well be reopening at a different location in JC in the near future...

cdwill, Monday, 23 May 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, let's not forget QXT's in Newark...

cdwill, Monday, 23 May 2005 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

new brunswick is north-central if anything but most certainly not south! it's funny, though, i'm from union county and when i tell kids from, say, passaic that i'm from north jersey they tend to get all huffy and proclaim that i'm not "really" from there. wtf?

also, WAYNE FIREHOUSE! i saw the slackers there for free (despite it not being a free show)

and of course, in the great TS: north vs. south debate: NORTH BY FIVE ZILLION LIGHT YEARS

joseph (joseph), Monday, 23 May 2005 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i mostly hate the njhxc scene for its disgusting cliqueishness and the lame macho "bromosh" lifestyle that hxc dudes espouse. and the boring music doesn't help matters, either.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 23 May 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you talking to kids from passaic anyway?
passaic sucks.

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 23 May 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i mostly hate the njhxc scene for its disgusting cliqueishness and the lame macho "bromosh" lifestyle that hxc dudes espouse. and the boring music doesn't help matters, either.

Dude did you sleep through emo?

You're jumping to conclusions my friend!!!! (ex machina), Monday, 23 May 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

new brunswick is north-central if anything but most certainly not south!

just to repeat...I was teasing when I implied anything that wasn't Essex county was South Jersey, or NY state.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 May 2005 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I always considered the Driscoll Bridge (exit 129 or so on GS Parkway) to be the dividing line between North and Central Jersey. South Jersey is below exit 60 or so.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

how can i fucking resist this thread??

-green parrot (neptune)
-patrix (new brunswick)
-scott hall (new brunswick/rutgers)
-yeah, the court tavern (new brunswick)
-the basement of some horrible route 35 club (central jerseyans like maria will understand the implication) where my friends' band played on my 21st birthday
-the beat 'n path (hoboken - now the whiskey bar?)

yadda yadda yadda

mike a, Monday, 23 May 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, I used to go to Obsessions. Were all you people there? We could have FAPed.

My band didn't get to play any of these places. We just played Battles of the Bands at St. Vincent's church in Madison. Rush, Sabbath, Zep, VH, etc.

Later on, I would go to Maxwells before it got lame, and then while it was lame, and after it returned from lameness.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

-the basement of some horrible route 35 club (central jerseyans like maria will understand the implication)
hey now, my father's restaurant is on 35, so watch what you say.

i too consider the driscoll bridge to be the mason-dixon line of NJ.

did anyone see shows at the elks or masonic lodge in metuchen?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, hi, lets not forget the STONE PONY or THE SAINT or THE MELODY BAR.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and whats the name of the rock club in AC thats open 24/7?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Slightly off-topic, let me say that the Mill Hill in Trenton has a shockingly good jukebox in the downstairs bar, the clientele of which seems to consist entirely of disaffected underage drinkers from the Pine Barrens.

Guayaquil, Monday, 23 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Melody Bar!
The Roxy!

(both New Brunswick)

They had great house dj's at The Roxy. Sorority girls on fire to "Work It To The Bone".

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

what about records stores?

who remembers Planet X records? I went once.

Remember when Vintage Vinyl was REALLY good? I bought Sun City Girls records and an xpressway video there.

Crazy Rhythms was good enough to name a DJ team after...

but it was Cafe Soundz that changed my life...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in high school, I had a few buddies who put on various poppunk/emo/hardcore/etc shows, mostly in North Jersey. Garfield, Teaneck VFW (before a 300-person-over-capacity Dropkick Murphy's show ended shows there forever), Norwood, Wayne Firehouse.

The big dog in the "scene" back then, though, was Ricky Saporta and all his shows. At the Drive-In at Manville and huge Wayne Firehouse shows (it was Big Fucking Deal when Jimmy Eat World played).

Man, this thread takes it back. I haven't thought of these years (or these bands) in forever. Seems I was on more of the pop punk/screamo-y side than many of you folks, though. Lanemeyer, Humble Beginnings, Bigwig, Shady View Terrace -- I ate that shit up. Yikes.

hot doorknobs (hot doorknobs), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the greatest club in the history of new jersey was the brighton bar in long branch.

please raise a glass now to big nurse, nudeswirl, monster magnet, they might be vaginas, daisy cutter, gigantic, freak theater, godspeed and, especially, jacko the doorman/booker/promoter/everythingelse.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll raise a glass to any vagina, anywhere.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan -

Where was Cafe Soundz? Montclair? Was that next to the goth store?

While at RU, I used to buy much stuff at Planet X and also the little downstairs record store a few doors away (forget the name.) Spike, who owned Planet X, was a nice guy. Turned me on to Underground Resistance.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

But THE BEST record store was Sound Exchange in Pequannock, NJ. They got the most amazing import vinyl in every other day and having friends working the register there was a great deal. I bought most of my formative postpunk/new wave music and videos at that place.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Crazy Rhythms best. I wish it was still there. Are there any good stores in North Jersey these days? I'm kinda out of the loop. When I do go shopping I trek down to Princeton.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

vintage vinyl was awesome at one point. i cant even bring myself to go in there when im home because its so bad now...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

We're talking about record stores in New Brusnwick area and nobody's mentioned Cheap Thrills??

Yes it did turn crappy after a while but when I was there (late 80s/early 90s) it was great.

JAS, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, cheap thrills was great! kind of off topic, but does anyone remember captain video and its demise?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I do, Maria. Pretty sad. Actually, that's the little downstairs store I mentioned upthread. I had forgotten the name...

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

just to repeat...I was teasing when I implied anything that wasn't Essex county was South Jersey, or NY state.

haha, sorry dan, you know as well as i how passionate us jersey folx get about our geography ;)

the only time i've been to the stone pony was to see a comedy act. isn't it threatening to be shut down soon, or did i dream that rumor? and did birch hill ever make good on its promise to close?

vintage vinyl didn't seem THAT bad when i was last there, but the cd selection is definitely better than the vinyl section (and i buy more of the former); princeton record exchange is far, far better on both fronts. never been to crazy rhythms or most of the other record stores mentioned here (a drawback to not having a car in this state).

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a true story: As a high-schooler, I used to get my mom to drive me into New Brunswick to go record-shopping at Cheap Thrills, Music In a Different Kitchen and Captain Video. Crazy Eddie's in East Brunswick, too - several WRSU types worked there. Later I figured out the Central Jersey bus system and went into town that way.

I used to call the WRSU DJs constantly. Luckily for today's DJs, email and podcasting have cut down on pesterers like me.

I knew the Captain Video owner. Though he and I were not always friends, I was very sad to hear the news all the same.

mike a, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Later I figured out the Central Jersey bus system and went into town that way.

i'm still too afraid to do this

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

hey now, my father's restaurant is on 35, so watch what you say.

Oh, no offense to your father's establishment, or anyplace else along 35 that isn't a sleazy bar or club.

That night was so strange. Downstairs: indie-rock band from Rutgers and three of their friends. Upstairs: a scene right out of The Sopranos.

mike a, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

its cool. i was joking around. i always wanted to hold rock shows at my dad's restaurant but he would never let me.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

>>>Where was Cafe Soundz? Montclair? Was that next to the goth store?

Yes! Right on Bloomfield Avenue. Very cool store, I used to go here between 96 and 98 for underground/experimental rock cds, but the owner lost interest in that and delved almost completely into electronica at some point. I begged him for a job once but I just didn't know enough about music at the time.

And I heard the same thing about Uncle Joe's; the one brother still has the liquor and cabaret license and is trying to find someplace nearby to open up, but rents around there are completely out of control. They got a shitload of money for the property and that's why the other brother wanted to sell, I'm told. He should look in JC Heights. I'm really going to miss their patio this summer.

Shaun (shaun), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

uncle joes should move to metuchen.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(x - post) The "goth store" being the Montclair branch of the once mighty (when they were in Passaic, next door to the Capitol Theater) Tu Tone.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The owners of Uncle Joe's are looking at another property in JC, not far from the old site- it's an old bank, I think. The old Joe's building was just condemned over the weekend, and the tenants living above it are now holdovers.

cdwill, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Cafe Soundz in Montclair and Sound Exchange in Wayne (not Pequannock) are both still there.

Also, Let It Rock in Montclair is a pretty good store, too.

cdwill, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cafe Soundz and Tu Tone (sp?) merged into one big store, I think. Back in the day Cafe Soundz carried some cool shit, that's where I got my Chris and Cosey t-shirt. I also bought a zine there edited by Morgan Geist, because it had interviews with the Severed Heads and Meat Beat Manifesto. Bobby gave me Morgan's phone number. How sketchy is that? I also asked for a job but Bobby turned me down. He had 2 employees at the time, one of them was James Plotkin of Old Lady Drivers, now Khanate. When I was a freshman in college I came back and James turned me onto Cluster and other Krautrockers.

Let It Rock was opened by somebody who I think used to work at Venus when it was on 8th st near 6th and was the coolest record store in the city. The guy from Rockit Scientist worked there as well. I will never forget the feeling of awe and wonder I had when I walked into Venus. Record stores like that simply don't exist, killed by the internet. Before everything worth more then a buck was put online, you'd go into these places, I remember I was still in my classic rock phase and Venus would have like, 12 copies of Piper at the Gates of Dawn. EMI pressing...Capitol Pressing, with See Emily Play, without See Emily Play and they all cost so much money!

But yeah, Sound Exchange in Wayne was amazing, though I could never afford anything. It was ALL imports and everything was like 28 dollars. I'd go and stare at the Can, Throbbing Gristle and Durutti Column CDs. And the Pop Will Eat Itself 12"s!

While my sister was cool enough to lie to my parents and come into nyc for hardcore shows, all I could do was get a ride to Montclair for the afternoon. Cafe Soundz, Crazy Rhythms, Middle Earth, the Montclair Book Center. That was my entire adolescence.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Where'd I get "Tu Tone"? It was Two Tone. I think.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(X-post) Speaking of Severed Heads and MBM how could I have forgotten to mention DJ Freak's (aka The Pipeline) in No. Newark?
I've mentioned the place before on some other thread but it was basically a little dive bar with a stage and mini dancefloor, all set cozily in a bleak corner of Newark. Most of the Wax Trax/PIAS/Nettwerk bands played there on their tours since the bar's owner had some sort of connection with the labels. I saw Severed Heads and MBM a couple of times there (MBM & dancers in warty rubber lizard suits), along with the Young Gods (still one of the best performances I've ever seen), MC 900 Ft. Jesus & DJ Zero, Nine Inch Nails (really bad pre-"blowing up" lineup), etc. Good times.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pipeline was amazing, as was City Gardens in Trenton.

Yeah, it was Two Tone.

cdwill, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that was fishy.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

James Plotkin... He was in burning witch also, wasn't he? I constanly hear him being namedropped with experimental black/death metal stuff. Khanate is the scariest band I've ever listened to. I had no clue Plotkin was from this area.

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)
