Ice Ice Baby: Classic or Dud?

Is "so bad it's great" a legitimate claim on greatness?? Or is this song even bad at all? Why do you know all the words if you hate it so much?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not great, but it's decent enough pop rap (nice use of the Queen/Bowie sample.) I don't remember any words except the chorus (which is annoying precisely because it is so catchy.) Cool As Ice on the hand is so bad it's actually funny. Yup yup.

Yup Yup indeed.

cookin' MCs like a pound of bacon.

Vanilla Ice has no one but himself to blame for tainting the legacy of this classic, classic song.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Flow like a harpoon?

Korg M-1?

Dud.

No amount of revisionist thinking can alter the context for me.

I bought that shit when it was on Ichiban, and I threw it in the garbage can before SBK dug it out and remarketed it, packaged with Hammer Pants and Ya Kid K.

And I loved Hammer's first couple releases.

Pump It Up (Here's the News) by Hammer deserves the classic status given to Ice in my opin.

flows like a harpoon daily and nightly

so classic

I'm often a sucker for novelties.

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

All right stop collaborate1 and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
2
Will it ever stop yo I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal3
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance go rush to the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it you better gain weight4
You better hit bull's eye the kid don't play
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

CHORUS
Ice ice baby vanillla (x4)

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in and the vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point to the point no faking
I'm cooking MC's like a pound of bacon
Burning them if you ain't quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi-hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 5.0
With my rag-top down so my hair can blow5
The girlies on standby waving just to say hi
Did you stop no I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
The block was dead
Yo so I continued to A1A Beachfront Avenue
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous 'cause I'm out getting mine
Shay with a guage and Vanilla with a nine
Reading for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they're so full of eight balls
Gunshots rang out like a bell
I grabbed my nine all I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm trying to get away before the jackers jack
6
Police on the scene you know what I mean
They passed me up confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

REPEAT CHORUS

Take heed 'cause I'm a lyrical poet
Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes7 that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed
This is a hell of a concept
8
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast other DJs say damn
If my rhyme was a drug I'd sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it's time to get loose9
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while Shay revolves it

Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby (oh-oh) vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla ice
Yo man let's get out of here
Word to your mother
Ice ice baby too cold
Ice ice baby too cold too cold (x2)
Ice ice baby

1. cease activity, now team up on a project and pay attention to me

2. an unknown force turns me into a constantly moving phallus

3. my skills are comparable to someone who defaces other people's property

4. if to hang around me you must adore me, eat a lot and the best at what you do

5. my hair, despite having the shape and consistency of a duck's ass, has the ability to "blow"

6. I totally wrote the opening verse of "Regulators"

7. I am proud of the feasibility of my rhymes

8. this track is both a expiremental process AND an artistic product, which is fucking amazing.

9. my stiffness is intentional

Ichiban, man, that brings back some memories...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

translation #2 is erroneous, as he is not transformed, but simply using a metaphor. He is not the artist but the vessel set in eternal motion. Like the mystery of who could create existence, it is a mystery even to Ice himself how he has become this lyrical weapon

Man, Pappa, that first one you posted is beyond description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That first photo was the Ichiban realease.

The girl on the cover is the girl in the video who licks the ice cream.

Notice she wears no clothing on the top portion of her body, to the delight of all 1990.

The interview speaks a bit about how he went pop and was forced to live up to his management/label forged bio after SBK bought the contract from his manager...however, the albums are virtually identical (sans one or two songs), and the video for Ice Ice Baby was first aired on Yo! MTV Raps under the Ichiban moniker -- meaning the Miami gear and Miami scenes were all directed and financed before SBK got involved.

Same old song.

I will say though that the actual context of his music does shine a bit in that interview. He's a product of the southern rap music scene circa 1985, which doesn't place him too far off.

Too bad it was 1990.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

classic.

His ripping of of Queen-Bowie was awesome, especially the way he defended himself on VH-1 (something like, "It wasn't totally stolen. It has that extra beat in it if you listen to it.") Didn't he ultimately have to pay Queen-Bowie?

Plus, he nailed Madonna before the Worm or Canseco did.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I mention that my friend, while at school, had to perform this song. Of course, drug use could not be condoned, so the line became
"If rap was a sandwich I'd serve it with ham". Which ties in much better with the whole 'bacon' sentiment.

And now;

Just seeing the words "Ice, Ice, Baby" put the song in my head. So, mission accomplished, Mr. Ice.

However, defacing property in the name of the song is a definite classic:

That's from the Extremely Live CD which is totally classic; the best part was that there really were no fellas in the house (at least none above the age of 15), but overall I thought the mix w/ live drummer was really good, no lie. Plus it had "Havin a Roni" on it which isn't even a song
