Joost Visser

Been listening to Joost Visser's "Partners in Hair" disc almost non-stop the past while - or at least, during work breaks. (groan) Is Visser the great lost man of Dutch music? Has anyone heard any more of Visser's solo work? (Does it exist?) Are De Artsen worth following up? Did Joost get the bum rap, what with the other members of De Artsen going off to lead the (inferior but still decent) Bettie Serveert? (That's the story, right?) I think this record might be the best thing Ajax released, and that was one helluva catalogue for a while there.

I'll always remember my first exposure to Visser's music, listening back to a tape of an old radio show by Ian Wadley (now in the Bird Blobs, fact fans!), while driving from Brisbane to Melbourne with Mr Wadley. "Watch Your Remours".

People, tell me more.

We (www.theheights.nl) recently played with a band that featured Joost on guitar and backing vocals (as well as De Artsen's original drummer). Forgot the name right now, I can maybe look it up in the e-mail at home... Anyway, Joost's singing was still heartbreaking & beautiful, and I think he was doing well. He's got serious hearing problems though, they said they had to play really soft because otherwise it would hurt Joost's ears. BUT he did tell us that De Artsen had a second album that, I think, only got released in Germany, or something like that? Does anybody know anything about this?

Anyway, yeah, Joost Visser, De Artsen... Best. Dutch. Band. Ever. (although The Outsiders were pretty good too) And De Artsen's Conny Waves With A Shell is even better than Partners In Hair, imho. I think Joost still (very) occasionally plays soloshows too (this band was with someone else's songs (former Mongrell singer Manon)) in Amsterdam, but I haven't been lucky enough to catch one of those yet. So "great", yes, "lost", not entirely.

The "second" De Artsen record was "Out of Sack" which was more of an odds and ends collection rather than proper studio album per se. Came out on Glitterhouse (Germany) circa 1990 (perhaps only on LP?), has a blurry band photo on the cover, and is a mixed bag but well worth tracking down.

I thought we had a Joost thread but apparently I'm totally mistaken.

And on the De Artsen/Bettie Serveert axis, what about the Furtips? They've got a new one out.

second album Der Artsen album isn't so great as the band was already sort of broken up after they signed the contract to do it. a bit of a deal breaker to get out of it, though there are bright spots. as for joost, an awesome musician who I also want to hear more from.
