1.) Having read a number of reviews of the new album I'm still not sure what they sound like - Can anyone enlighten
2.) I'm sure I read somewhere that one of them used to be in World of Twist - Am I completely off the mark.
3.) Are they any good

hmmm.

i know of World of Twist people ending up as Earl Brutus ..

is this Art Brut a new variation on that glorious mess of a band ?

i dont read NME so i have no idea .. but would be interested to know if thats the case ..

I think Art Brut are all a little young to be ex-World Of Twist, but I could be wrong.

They make rather shouty novelty indie - a modern update on Carter perhaps?

Live they're a bit shambolic, but their frontman is really quite funny.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No World of Twist content

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah - Thanks, you're right - Earl Brutus and not Art Brut - Thanks

Not sure I fancy shouty novelty indie though....

arnoldpalmer, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They're more like John Shuttleworth / Jilted John than Carter IMO.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank God for that!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Only really heard 'Formed a Band', but the vocalist's delivery seems very much inspired by Mark P from ATV. The band are much tighter, but then . .

Soukesian, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh they did that song? Flippin' rubbish then.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard the album, which is not bad, though seems to be not THAT good. Other kind of "art punk" bands do it better.

zeus, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Tom, I think you're spot on with Jilten John. I was searching for the right comparison, but couldn't quite nail it.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to defend Fruitbat's honour!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That's more than he ever did!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit less cheeky/twee than Jilted John, but yeah. "Good Weekend" sounds disturbingly like Menswear, and the power-chord basics the band sticks to -- the kind of stuff 14-year-old garage bands easily cover for fun -- would fit fine in that era, or really any other. It's about the singer shouting really clever, funny, dead-on, perfect stuff, which is a terrific change from new-wave bands that spend time honing their style but don't have anything very entertaining to communicate. Art Brut don't actually have a ton in the way of style, I don't think, and when they do it's accidental; they've got personality, which suits them better.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, their singer could be shouting his stuff over Sleeper songs, and this'd be nearly as good.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Good Weekend" sounds disturbingly like Menswear

This is a sad adverb and you should consider a more positive substitution.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a song called "These Animal Menswear", don't they?

M Philip O'Nyman (Ferg), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My, umm, disturbation has less to do with the quality of Menswear's extensive back catalog and more to do with the general bizarritude of Art Brut turning out to have one song that sounds exactly like, you know, Menswear. Do Maximo Park have one song that sounds exactly like S*M*A*S*H?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The funny thing about Art Brut is that, well, I never heard any of those New Wave of New Wave bands (NME must be sad that they wasted that one a few years early), but if they sounded anything like the fawning press coverage they got (and I'm sure they didn't), I imagine they'd have sounded about like Art Brut does today.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ELASTICA NABISCO ELASTICA!

Actually, holy crap, ELASTICA!!!!!!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
They're hiLARious live, and not only cuz the vocalist has a worse mustache than mine.

I might not've bought the album last night if I knew the US one will have "These Animal Menswear" on it, but eh.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

They have a song called "These Animal Menswear", don't they?

and for joy, the DJ at their gig last night played These Animal Men's mighty "Speeed King" single!

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 14 June 2007 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

The lead singer no longer has the moustache.

They are great live. The band live to rock, while the singer lives to do rambling stream of consciousness lyrics (that are probably very scripted). I generally hate lyrics, which is one reason why I listen to a lot of foreign stuff these days, but his lyrics are great.

See also the side project band Everybody Was In The French Resistance... Now!

Yeah I'm looking forward to this a lot. Another album produced by Frank Black which is great as he did a fine job on Vs Satan.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 4 March 2011 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah and this is pretty cool, they launched it this afternoon.

important revive

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

in retrospect, shoulda gone on the "why do ppl like art brut?" thread

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

have they gone thru puberty yet?

It made them boring.

Still anticipating this upcoming album, but I thought the third one was an exciting return to form at the time and then promptly stopped listening to it forever it appears.

Can't beat that first one imo. Why do you hate it ilxor?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

every time i put on 1st album, i end up laughing.
in a good way.
then i remember the heated debate i witnessed backstage @ glasto' 05 between eddie argos and john robb about bands from manchester.
details as to the exact points of discussion are buried under a grey cell hangover fug, but i do remember it being hugely entertaining.

I still listen to the third album a lot, it was a lot better than It's a Bit Complicated but then I think that one was pretty underrated too. You are right though they will never beat the first one, it still sounds absolutely perfect to me.

I heard a clip of the new single (Lost Weekend) in which he actually attempts singing after having lessons from Frank Black. He sounds like a cross between Luke Haines and Colin Newman, it's quite odd to hear.

This is the new song you can download for free.

The "1 2 3 I'll let you pin me" bit has been stuck in my head for days.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't listened to them in ages but I really liked the first album a lot and they were tons of fun when I saw them live.

ENBB, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the live show I saw in 2006 was AWESOME.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this was probably around then too. I think they'd had a second album come out but I hadn't heard it. Anyway, like I said, fun.

ENBB, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

ugh, who thought what this band needed was singing?

like a musical album. made by a band. (fucking in the streets), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this was probably around then too. I think they'd had a second album come out but I hadn't heard it. Anyway, like I said, fun.

dare say I saw them the same time - they had the Chr1s Ch1nchilla replacement on gtr, anyway - and likewise loved the first album and didn't bother with the second, and likewise likewise they were rly fun. had picked them over an Andrew WK solo show, so that was a relief.

lol kudso (sic), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

the third album was ok, perhaps even a bit more consistent than the first (which i'm sick of anyway) but it's hard to say that more than one album of theirs is entirely necessary

Love, M.D. (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

Just leaked. Will give it a shake in the morning.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 07:08 (fifteen years ago)

Couldn't wait. Listening now...there's a classic line in "Bad Comedian"

"How can you bear to hold his hand? / I bet he signs his name in Comic Sans."

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 07:25 (fifteen years ago)

I can't seem to find a link, is it in the usual places? Maybe it's already been take down.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 09:03 (fifteen years ago)

It'll probably be around later today.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 09:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I'll keep an eye out for it.

So how's it sounding so far?

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 09:13 (fifteen years ago)

These guys are just taunting Fat Dom P now, surely.

Congrats all round.

Richard Stubbs' Tears (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

wow, cover art by that Phonogram guy. Exciting.

The New Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

No big surprise to say that I am loving this after a few plays. The last two tracks are just lovely, a really different side to them.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

This is mostly pretty good, but a few missed opportunities. Really love the closing two tracks, oddly affecting for these guys.
