Oddly, Bill Bellamy is the guest....

PB, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope she's better than The Bravery. (ILM haunt) Rockaction and I watched them perform on Conan last week, and it was so bad/ridiculous that we could hardly laugh. I couldn't engineer a more band with more indie posturing if i tried!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It shouldn't be too tough for her to top the Bravery. Ive never seen her perform though.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

She was dreadful on Kimmel.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

She was great on Kimmel.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

She was on Kimmel.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

She was on.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Was she?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

She was.

She.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly, Bill Bellamy is the guest....

if only it was Downtown Julie Brown!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish she'd play up the piracy angle and have tons of unauthorized samples. And she needs to drop Diplo's pasty ass. I guess he can make the beats, but he ruins the vibe live. They should get someone crazier/angrier looking to be behind the DJ booth. MIA's look is perfect, especially when she makes her hair huge, but she needs to be louder and more confident. That'll come with time though.

Last children in new yawk, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, are you saying that Diplo should be replaced with Jessie the MTV VJ?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes

Last children in new yawk, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

if you're watching the dj during the MIA set you might want to ask yourself what you're doing there in the first place

jones (actual), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Averting your eyes at the train wreck called "dancing?"

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yes HOW DARE THEY

jones (actual), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Having seen the subway wreck that was her performance on Kimmel, I hope she (1) doesn't dress like Blossom again, (2) doesn't continue doing her windmill "dance" move, and (3) actually sounds good.

PB, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They should just keep the camera fixed on Diplo. He's hawt.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

She dresses like blossom!? I have a whole new respect for her!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 26 May 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Will the guy in the blue shirt,
who did the loose-robot,
be there?

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'd classify M.I.A. as internet music.

Last Children in New Yawk, Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Having seen the subway wreck that was her performance on Kimmel, I hope she (1) doesn't dress like Blossom again, (2) doesn't continue doing her windmill "dance" move, and (3) actually sounds good.

(1) What is a "subway wreck"?
(2) I like her clothes
(3) I like her dance moves (a lot)
(4) She sounded great
(5) What the f*ck are you into? It seems pretty clear that you want nothing of MIA, so why don't you go to another thread where your favorite live act is discussed?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'd classify M.I.A. as internet music.

Which just might the new era of popular music. Newer than the Electronic era, which superceded Rock era, which superceded Jazz era, which superceded the era of music performance (vaudeville, minstrels) and the birth of popular sheet music.

Technology has always ushered in the new era. That and kids naivete.

I think of MIA like the current Bill Haley. (S)he's no Chuck Berry/Elvis, but she's a sign something's changing.

Daft Punk & DFA are like Wynonnie Harris and Big Joe Turner.

Or something similar. I really don't know.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that was painful to watch. She'd do better to stay rooted in one spot and let the other girl take care of all the dancing.

Curt (cgould), Saturday, 28 May 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That sure wasn't Diplo, who was it?

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 28 May 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh... that was just dire. At least the Kimmel appearance had sexy Diplo.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 28 May 2005 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

haha was this dj a dude with a dashing moustache by any chance?

Turntable stylings by David Cross?

Curt (cgould), Saturday, 28 May 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA is only good when she's manic and shouty. She looked bored on Conan.

minolta (minolta), Saturday, 28 May 2005 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'd classify M.I.A. as internet music.

Oh man. Begun, this term has only.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 28 May 2005 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

so where was Diplo then?

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 28 May 2005 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That sucked!

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 28 May 2005 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy amateur night

Keith C (kcraw916), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda liked her funny little walking dance. I also realized that there is one thing I like about her music, the way her voice goes up into a squeaky high note at the end of a lot of words/lines.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

this was the first time i had ever heard her and i loved it!

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 28 May 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew the haters were just hating.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that walking dance was awesome

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 28 May 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), May 26th, 2005.

Are you some kind of cunt?

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That performance was vastly better than the one on Kimmel. The sound is always better on Conan for some reason....other late night shows tend to sound kind of tinny. And the camera work was, obviously, better.

But still, she's utterly devoid of any stage presence whatsoever. She seems shy and almost uninterested on stage, and this is completely at odds with the frenetic schizoid energy of the music. Why would I pay money to see her in concert if the performer seems so out of her league on stage? The music is fun....but she seems embarrassed to be there.

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, No, I was just calling your out for being insufferably negative.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But in that you're not alone on ILM.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked her live performance last week (in Detroit), and hated the Kimmel appearance (didn't see her on Conan). In her defense, she hasn't been doing this very long (only a couple of dozen live shows???), and her performance is almost exclusively suited for a nightclub. I empathize with her having to try perform, probably self-consciously, at daytime in-stores or mid-day television appearances with half of the audience sitting on their hands, staring blankly at her.

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, what the f*ck are you into? It seems pretty clear that you want nothing of negativity, so why don't you go to another forum where your favorite live act isn't critiqued?

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(i'm not actually suggesting you split, I'm just noticing the irony here)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Miccio, I of course say the occasional negative thing on here, but if I'm not mistaken, this person actually started the "thread where we list things we dislike about M.I.A.'s ARULAR" and then seems to start more MIA threads just to be negative. I find it annoying and trollish.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys know that you can say fuck without the asterisk... right?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I started this thread so people would know she was performing.....

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd definitely find it trollish if the thread opened with "cor, that MIA's gonna suck ain't she? No Geri Halliwell, wot?" but the intent if anything seems to promote her.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to see this damnit

jones (actual), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And what's wrong with presenting a negative opinion? Obviously not everyone seems to think she's anywhere near as good as people like you say. It's not that I want her to fail, I just honestly don't get the big deal, despite months of listening to Arular to try to.

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
Go look at PB's posts on that other thread and then ask why would this person start multiple MIA threads if they don't even like MIA? It's everyone's right of course, but it's also fine to point out when someone is being a troll.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's totally ironic that a board called "i love music" seems to have all these people who don't seem to like music but just want to kill it with WORDS!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You are a cunt.

I've started two M.I.A.-centric threads.....one to counter the "This is the thread where we freak out over how awesome Arular is" lovefest, and this one, to point out that she was going to be performing on Conan. It ain't my fault she sucks live. God forbid anyone say a bad thing about thing about her.

She is incredibly pretty though....

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

PB, Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Freaking out about an album, claiming you like her live, or even discussing M.I.A. doesn't mean that ILM is full of zealots. You do realize that people, when with company, tend to talk about and discuss things they like but would not necessarily die for? I haven't seen anyone respond to a criticism of her dancing with OMG YOU ARE FLAT OUT WRONG DIE NOW like you'd see from real crazy fans. The anti-lovefest crap seems like a call to halt discussion, where it's really an incitement for more.

I do this all the time on accident, it's called being a killjoy.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what's it called when it's not an accident?

jones (actual), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's called being an asshole cf. PB

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 28 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what was the name of the song she performed?

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 28 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the song was galang.

here's the critique from a fan whose joy cannot be killed:

m.i.a. sounded a little off and she seemed a bit out of breath and she was wearing a goofy outfit and she has funny dance moves. it was perfect!

she was exactly who she is which is exactly who i want her to be. who wants to watch a fucking jaded rockstar with slick moves and professional grooming and every ounce of ingenuousness smoothed away? part of m.i.a.'s appeal is that she's real and relatable and cute and imperfect.

also: bored? nervous maybe, but definitely not bored.

lxy (lxy), Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

She sure didn't help herself showbiz-wise when, on the couch after the break, when Conan thanked his guests then thanked Max & the band, she just stared off unawares, not point over to Max and clapping, winking, remarking, "Boy, that's some band!"

Curt (cgould), Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

again, "a-ruler" ??

i refuse to pronounce it this way, should i ever need to say it aloud.

Jimmy_tango, Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Conan > every critic in America, because he was able to form a sentence about M.I.A. that included the word "London" but not "Sri Lanka"
