Has any band ever looked as silly as Heatwave in their matching disco outfits?

Celtic Frosts' "glam" phase circa Cold Lake.

I dunno, Split Enz are in the running

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, but I gotta hear me some heatwave.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. Mudvayne and Split Enz are trying to look silly or scary or strange or whatever, whereas the Heatwave outfits (and their like) were once taken seriously.

They look as if they thought they looked cool, which makes it much sillier. The lack of tongue in cheek is key.

The Mad Puffin, Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mudvayne and Split Enz are trying to look silly

Bingo!

Here is Celtic Frost circa Cold Lake.....

It's important to remember that they usually looked like this:

http://mclub.te.net.ua/images/art/artist_906.jpg

..and while, yes, this look is also quite silly, at least they looked like they meant it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

[Begins furiously googling for a shot of Slade circa '73, in suspenders, checkered trousers, striped sox, 12-inch platform shoes and porkpie hat]

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, point taken about split enz, but how about the bay city rollers? they weren't trying to look silly - it was the height of fashion, apparently...

Jesus. What made them think those pants were a good idea....to say nothing of the shoes. Or the hair.

I can tell this is going to be the thread of the day...

It's pretty beautiful already, and will get more so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, clearly you haven't heard about the horrible FLOODS that terrorised the Scottish people in the 70s. Fashion had to adjust accordingly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that they were a bastion of dignity prior to the make-over, but who could forget the Renaissance-era Village People?

damn, that one's too big but it's worth clicking on. these people manage to pull off an incredibly silly look without even wearing crazy costumes.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What the...who IS that?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the last one?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Hartman's band, on the back of the Instant Replay album, of course! (And featuring GE Smith.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, I just bought it the other day so it's fresh in my mind. The drummer (left) looks more like a corpse on the actual LP.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

God, you're right, it IS G. E. Smith. Crazy.

**but how about the bay city rollers? they weren't trying to look silly - it was the height of fashion, apparently...**

cf any US high school yearbook from the mid 70s. those baggy pants loud plaids platform shoes shag hairdos were truly inescapable. there's a family picture w/16yrold me looking like the fifth member of The Sweet that I'm really glad isn't available on the internet.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I had platform shoes and elephant flares (and silk shirts!) too. They were everywhere.

Somebody should track down a photo of the Mexican glam-metal band Mara; they beat all of these guys, I promise. Also Madame X. And maybe the Noize Toys:

xhuxk, Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing about Heatwave's costumes (see top of thread pic) is that it really was the style of the times. I vividly recall a performance clip of the Ohio Players (singing "Fire" or "Rollercoaster" or something) wearing virtually identical suits. Likewise the Commodores.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a glam-metal band I saw in Kerrang! in the 80s. I can't remember their name, but the picture of at least one chubby-faced oaf with a huge moustache running into inch-wide lipstick has stayed in my hilarity banks ever since.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, at my high school's talent show, some guys put together a fake band called the Gay City Rollers. I am not making this up. Some of them, I'm pretty sure, wound up in a fake punk band called Luke Mucus and the Phlegm a couple years later; their most popular song was "I Want to Sniff Sheila Young's Bicycle Seat After a 50-mile Ride.")

xp

I loved'em, but someting about the cheezy sunglasses and the white boots ruined this (otherwise unimpeachable? Nah I think not) look....

Walter - the first picture you posted...is that Diamond Hook?

I remember rifiling through my folks' record collection when I was about 5 or 6 and being terrified by a similar image on one of their LP's. Good god, how scary are folk in spandex with afros/perms when yr
young.

Silly dressed bands - Roxy Music circa '71? (which Split Enz did their own version of)

I can't believe I never saw this thread. My family was stationed overseas in Germany from 1976-79, right at the height of Heatwave's popularity; and they did a tour in Europe which included military installations. They played one night at the DYA (Dependent Youth Association) Club at Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne, where my dad worked, and while I didn't get to attend I know a lot of kids who did, and it was like the greatest thing that ever happened to them. They all autographed the wall there and I have a picture of it someplace. I'll see if I can dig it up.
