oldies song ID pleeze: this is driving me nuts, for realz

so i heard this great tune that i luv on the oldies station today, probly for the bizillionth time, but i don't know who it is & it's stuck in my head & i'll go crazy if i don't figure this out. fuck!! i'm sure it's super-obvious, but throw me a bone here people.

i think it's a 60s soul group, but it could be a Tommy James-ish type doppleganger. no clue. i'll attempt to string together what lyrics i can remember:
