Lo-fi albums that should've been Hi-fi

Lo-Fi has its limits. Comet Gain's Realistes is the most egregious offender I can think of. That record has some of the best songwriting in years, but it's hard to get past the riduculously horrible production. Surely there must be other records like this?

All Husker Du albums.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 27 May 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to hear what Big Black would sound like recorded in Albini's current studio.

i think the lo-fi of realistes is the best part of it! plus the fantastic cover artwork. i think bands almost always sound better lo-fi. look at guided by voices, they're complete crap in the studio.

Probably all Magnetic Fields albums up to "i".

I like the sound of Realistes and thought it compensated for the songs they can't quite play properly.

"Either/Or" and "XO" by Elliott Smith. Full of great songs that would have sounded even greater on a larger budget.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 27 May 2005 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I always wished that Sebadoh had recorded the EPs that comprised "Smash Your Head"
on a bigger budget. Same with "Bubble and Scrape".

Replacements -- Sorry Ma

Nigel (Nigel), Friday, 27 May 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Spine of God OTM. With sonic balls to match the intent, that album would've killed. Although you may be in trouble with the Bullgod for calling it "lo-fi".

brianiac (briania), Friday, 27 May 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I too like the sound of Realistes, but I think that Tigertown Pictures could have done with better production... Can't really think of many others, but then I'm a sucker for lo-fi most of the time...

Haha, in what universe are these considered lo-fi?

Slanted & Enchanted (don't hit me!).

That one song "Electronic Renaissance" by Belle and Sebastian.

I'd like to hear Ariel Pink's Worn Copy recorded properly but I guess half of the point is that it's really saturated.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

RAW POWER. Thank God Iggy remixed that album in the nineties.
