The Dead 60s

Listening to the album right now, and am relatively unmoved. But when I saw this band live I thought they were great. Reminded me of Talking Heads crossed with (late-era) Specials. I think most people will latch on to the (mild) dance-punk aesthetic to the disc, but there's weirder stuff going on here, I think.

Anyone else heard the record? Or am I missing some big European scandal wherein the Dead 60s are simultaneously the Next Big Thing and the most hated band on the continent?

Never heard of them

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Epic records in the U.S.. Had really nice, new, shiny equipment live.

Managed by Q Prime, which means someone sees them as a good investment.

Deltasonic records in the UK?

Dead 70s are better

Amon (eman), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Are either as good as the Dead C?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Much better than Deadsy.

i've not heard the record, but i've seen a video on mtv2. based on that one song, i wouldn't have said there was any dance-punk influence. more like kids trying to graft their take on "ghost town" on to pub-rock. dire.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Settles that one then.

Sounds like Blur then does it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

naughty naughty

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i never thought i'd say this, but:

The album sounds nothing like Blur in the least.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

... well that's something

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I saw a poster today for this band and thought "that Smiths quiff/Pringle sweater/English post-Mod meme is going to come back around forever." I've never heard them, that's just how they looked in their picture, like the next Ordinary Boys. Is there any point going to see them? They're playing here in a couple of weeks.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The new album is poor IMO. I had high hopes for them after buying their ep's, but the album is very bland, and the majority of the tunes sound very similar.

Dalen Nibb (Dalen), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, Dalen. But they were great when I saw them live.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's Talking Heads meets the Specials, I'm there.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The album is very thin, a 'spot the influence' exercise. Trying to sound like the Specials does no good when the execution is tepid.

"Riot Radio" has a Clash-y sensibility to it.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Saturday, 28 May 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

they are opening for THE BRAVERY on their tour here!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 28 May 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole album is one big Combat Rock ripoff, but it's oddly entertaining.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Well, I do think some of the songs are good, and I think they have the right idea compared to say Maximo Park, but "Riot Radio" pisses me off as a stale Gang of Four leftover.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Still, after the first two songs, the album is smooth sailing.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

And the only song that sounds like Gang of Four is Riot Radio, and the only song that sounds like Specials is the last one. What's in between is easily more refreshing than the next Franz Ferdinand album will be.

i'm interested in hearing the dub album thats supposed to be included with the cd ..

or is it crap ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 18 July 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

i heard this yesterday in the car, it was totally unoriginal (some frnz f, some talking h, and looooots of the clash) but quite entertaining. i will come back to it, sure.
