SFA - Love Kraft: Homage?

Is the title of Super Furry Animals' impending album a nod to two of their most obvious influences, Love and Kraftwerk?

freiden4xl, Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and, btw, saw them in ullapool last night. the newm aterial is brilliant.

freiden4xl, Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope so! I can't see the two styles blending well though so it would probably be kind of a scattershot album.

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Living as I do in Cardiff, I can reveal that there's a sex shop just two minutes' walk from the Super Furries' management offices, Ankst, called Love Craft. Enticingly, according to a sign in the window, it claims to cater for ladies "sized 8-26". Make of this what you will.

But the "Kraft" part of it. What an intriguing title...

How was bravecaptain? I know he is almost done with a new album.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 29 May 2005 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad to hear about SFA stuff but I already know it's going to be great.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 29 May 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Bravecaptain wasn't bad. My first exposure, but not a bad opener at all.

Check this out: http://www.nme.com/news/112493.htm

freiden4xl, Sunday, 29 May 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm ready to hear this now

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 29 May 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw BC supporting SFA in Cardiff, it was really, really lame.

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 29 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

bravecaptain was a full band this time. maybe that's why I didn't find them lame.

freiden4xl, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to Phantom Power this morning. It sounds alot better than the last time I gave it a run through, which was a couple months after it first came out.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

so.. for those of us who loved SFA up to and including Rings Around The World but thought Phantom Power was a complete snore, is Love Kraft showing hope in that respect?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like ELO, you'll love it (actually I've only heard it once, can't decide if I like it or not yet)

Jason J, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Phantom Power way better than RATW. Has this leaked yet? I've heard Laser Beam, which is very catchy, but heard it wasn't representative of the album. SFA OK.

molly, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it can be argued that every SFA album, including Phantom has an ELO sound, so I'm not getting any sense of what Love Kraft is at all here (which isn't a bad thing.. I'll find out eventually.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe they finally did their Xanadu soundtrack equivalent.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Im a big fan of everything theyve done except Radiator because I havent given it much of a chance. However, Im sorta worried that more of the other guys in the band will be handling the singing. Ghryf's (htf do you spell this) vocals are a big part of SFAs identity in my mind.. I'll wait to hear the tracks before I pass judgment.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this is gonna be so awesome that it's just gonna be awesome

That One Guy (That One Guy), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the outbreak of band democracy is ominous and his solo record was crap so i am hoping this doesn't stink although i agree with the idea that phantom power was a huge step back in the right direction after rings around the world. when they take themselves as seriously as they did on ratw then they become ponderous and snore-worthy.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh, never have I felt so alone in a thread. how is Phantom Power less serious than RATW?

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Aside from that one really endless song ("Run Christian Run"?) at the end of RATW, i don't really see RATW as serious at all.. "Sidewalk Serfer Girl"? "Juxtaposed With U"? "Presidential Suite"? "Receptable For The Respectable"??

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

RATW is their best album to date. They've gotten better and better since Fuzzy Logic. With Phantom Power, they took a nose dive down into the chasm of Fridmann-esque boredom.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Phantom Power has sharply divided SFA fans. The critics pretty much loved it - I loved it - but you hear a lot of people saying it's the band's most uninspired effort.

I hope Love Kraft is awesome.

And I thought Gruff's album was great. It took a while to get used to, but there were some great songs on there.

gorge, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"If you like ELO, you'll love it (actually I've only heard it once, can't decide if I like it or not yet)

-- Jason J (moronicadisc...), June 1st, 2005."

Is there any way you could give more detailed impressions? Under the Radar ran a really good bit on the album a couple of months ago, where they even went as far as to say the album's opening track is astonishing, but I haven't heard much since. Thanks.

gorge, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't wait! Can't wait!

I imagine this will be leaked sometime soon?

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear from a friend that the promos CDs are extremely secure and can't play in CD players.

I'm excited as well. "Laser Beam" rules.

gorge, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"yeah the outbreak of band democracy is ominous and his solo record was crap so i am hoping this doesn't stink although i agree with the idea that phantom power was a huge step back in the right direction after rings around the world. when they take themselves as seriously as they did on ratw then they become ponderous and snore-worthy."

I wouldn't worry about any sort of demise for SFA. Some of Gruff's bandmates went to a solo show I attended. I think they're all pretty good buds.

gorge, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i am DYING to hear this. i hope it leaks before i spontaneously combust.

Mai, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

only two months until the album releases, and I haven't heard anything about a leak... promos are out, too... hmm

freiden4xl, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Patience, grasshopper.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I’m going crazy waiting for this album. I had to agree with Pitchfork today that Phantom Power was a disappointment. A funny thing is happening however as I have been playing this album quite a bit and is better than I remember. I also might rate some of those past albums a bit higher but he has it right that they are one of the most consistence bands we have today. They are my favorite band from the last ten years (who are still together) and I hope this album finally brings them some commerical success.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

this band sucks

blink885, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i am listening to phantom power at the moment, good when your disappointing album doesn't have a duff track to be found.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I don't see how an album that has "Slow Life", "The Piccolo Snare", and "Bleed Forever" can be considered mediocre, but stranger things have happened...

gorge, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Disappointing when they have set the bar so high for themselves. I think every SFA album was in my top 10 the year of release. PP, on the other hand, was the first that did not do that. Granted it is still better than the majority of stuff that is coming out.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, I look at it as a step in a different direction - a step which I like. they hinted at it with "run! christian! run!" and expanded on that sort of songwriting on phantom. I can see why some sfa fans wouldn't like it, but I think it was time for the band to slow their songs down a bit. like I mentioned earlier, an album that includes songs like piccolo snare, slow life, and bleed forever is in no way bad.

gorge, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, see that's what I don't get about the "ah, FINALLY, slow songs" talk here. SFA, since Fuzzy Logic, always had the slower songs anyway.. and then there was the relatively low-key Mwng, whose only single was the only high-energy song on the album, practically. I detested "Run! Christian! Run!" after a while.. it's the only song that otherwise keeps Rings Around The World from being a perfect album.. (and that interminable video.. ugh).. so an album of "Run! Christian! Run!"'s is not what I wanted.

hmmmm, let's just agree to disagree here.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Run Christian Run was one of the only noteworthy songs on RATW! They've been on a steady decline with that and PP, slowly moving into the realm of disposable pop, so I'm not expecting much...

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

At least when people disagree about SFA, everyone has some different to say.

gorge, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

take a shine of the laser beam!

ullapool, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved both RATW and PP, and the two live songs I've heard ("Frequency" and "Laserbeam") have massive studio potential.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I also love RCR!!!

poppy baby, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Phantom Power and find RCR to be one of their more boring tracks.

SFA are a great band. Ten years strong, B-sides better than most A-sides, songs about laserbeams...bring it on.

dr dj sonmaroj, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

gorge OTM. wow.

well, absolutely no low or high expectations for Love Kraft then.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM?

gorge, Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it means "on the money"

Has this still not leaked?

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no leak. and I hear promos have been circulating for a while, too. sony's got tight copy protection on their discs now.

applekid, Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's being mailed out to press and radio next week, so the leak is probably pretty imminent.

Jason J, Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hey jason, you're the one who's said he's heard it. good/bad/average?

applekid, Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"OTM": I've been reading this site for nearly a year and have always thought it was "on the mark" for some reason. Huh, learn something new every day!

I heard it once... I didn't like it loads, but I usually find their slower songs are growers (I didn't like Phantom Power at first, but's it's one of my favorite of theirs now). So who knows?

Jason J, Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm thrilled.

ilk of kin, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Phantom Power rewards repeated listening as they say. Especially if you were a bit disappointed in it at first. I'm really looking forward to this new one.

everything, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Next week? I will have some sleepless nights knowing this info.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

They're my favorite band of the last decade or so.

gorge, Monday, 13 June 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Furries played Zoom on a Peel session around the same time as when RATW came out. It had some samples taken from an Ed Wood film and was a neat surfy/mental instrumental.

Louie Strychnine, Monday, 13 June 2005 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK! According to www.pauseandplay.com the U.S. date has been changed to Sept. 12. I can't find this date anywhere else but they usually are right on. Anyone know if the U.S. date has changed to this officially?

Thanks to my friends over at Obner for this information!

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell. Are you serious? It was supposed to come out before the UK release. But then I heard the UK release was pushed up to the 22nd from the 15th.

Temptation to download leak is quickly rising.

mjq jazz bar, Monday, 13 June 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw this in the NME:

Super Furry Animals have always been such champion stoners that it stood to reason that their stoner-rock phase would be champion. Yes, You read that right. Despite a 12 year history as eternal bridesmaids to a conveyer belt of lesser visionaries, their last album, 'PHANTOM POWER', ended up being their most commercially successful to date. The upshot is that they were allowed to go and make their new one, 'LOVEKRAFT', in Brazil, where frontman Gruff Rhys says the intense heat landed them with a record that was "DENSE".

This tour, then, is to road test the new stuff- eight new songs and no yetis. Theres talk of robot like creations ("somethings so new that it doesnt have a name, because they're going to be futuristic and robots are history, innit," Gruff will tell us later) for the autumn tours, but for now the sole concession to pantomime is a curious alien crash helmet worn by Gruff for the lush, opening 'SLOW LIFE'. But in doing something thats more conservative on the surface, we're reminded just how daring and inventive the Furries really are.
Because while 'LOVEKRAFT' is certainly not a techno record, it's their most mashed work to date; its like 'WHITE ALBUM'- era Beatles playing in an underground chamber and offset tonight with smacky rave visuals to fry the brain.

Theres still range, of course, and to prove it vocals are shared, with Bunf taking the lead on the sea shanty 'THE HORN' and Daf on the cushion-soft 'ATOMIK LUST', both a swashbuckling world away from the opiated sludge-rock of 'ZOOM!' or the pretty 'FREQUENCY'. The back catalogue stuff, meanwhile, is specially selected to fit the earthtones of the new songs, so we get nice ethereal standards like 'HELLO SUNSHINE', 'SOMETHING 4 FOR THE WEEKEND' and 'ICE HOCKEY HAIR', which over the years have blossomed and become a peak in a setlist thats full of them. Doing away with the gimmickry has only served to prove what a truly inventive and- though we might want to whisper this- mature band the Super Furry Animals have become. Well at least until those futuristic robots arrive at least."

xordoisla, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'm starting to get more excited now.

donut e-goo (donut), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait and driving myself crazy by reading thing like this.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Has there's always been this enthusiasm for the band? I just remember struggling to get ANYONE excited about SFA in the late 90s.. maybe it's just the states?

donut e-goo (donut), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they just have a very dedicated following.
