Does anyone think this album is the best album of 1993, and one of the top 10 of the 90's? I've listened to this album more than any other from this time period in my collection. I also think the cover of Blue Moon is one of the best covers ever...

I dunno if I'd call them best, but my favorite albums of `93 were probably....

Cop Shoot Cop seconded, Barkmarket - "Gimmick" my other personal choice.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, but I had 'Someday My Blues will Cover the Earth' as the second best of 2001, after Sam Phillips' 'Fan Dance'.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

1993...what a strange, transitional year.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as strong as some of the other years of that era, but there were a bunch of great records from 1993:

Rid Of Me: PJ Harvey
In Utero: Nirvana
Exile In Guyville: Liz Phair

But my favorite release of 1993 was a 4 song EP from Pavement, Watery, Domestic

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post:

On Transitional - Yeah, agreed. Weren't "Chaos AD", "Undertow" and "In Utero" all 1993 releases? The year that "heavy" music got weird...

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard of Cop Shot Cop, so thanks for posting that... I'll be sure to check them out.

Eric Wahl, Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish he would make songs out of stories in the bible again. also more pencil guitar and karin oliver or chelle marie.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard it, but I'd like to hear more about why it's so good, as opposed to what other people think is better.

i remember listening to perfect teeth, happiness, wolverine blues, and altered beast a lot in 1993, but there must have been more...

Your Favorite Albums of 1993

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mouth by Mouth" is pretty fine, but I find it somewhat inconsistent. Some of it's great, and the cover of "Blue Moon" is nice indeed.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Sunday, 29 May 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit of a shock to see a thread title on ILM that I agree with. Yes, at the time, Mouth By Mouth was certainly my favourite LP of 1993. But I was in the midst of my 4AD obsession (if I had to name silver and bronze placings they would probably have been Euphoria and Red House Painters - DAD3008) and my judgment is probably not to be trusted.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 29 May 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1993: What a phenomonal year for music in general. I think Giant Steps & A Storm in Heaven trump MxM for me, but it is a great record - and, I believe, HNIA's best: It really is the perfect intersection b/w their earlier, disjointed sound and the more conventional pop leanings of later records. I also dig the ESP Summer album Warn did with Ian Masters from The Pale Saints.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd completely forgot about this album and now suddenly "Can't Go Wrong Without You" has popped fully formed into my head accompanied by its weird video. That one really encapsulated 120 Minutes and something about that time...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

att'n People Who Know This Kind Of Thing: is there any truth at all to the rumor that "Can't Go Wrong Without You" is made up of samples from Purple Rain?

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Thursday, 3 November 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

i know the american version had to be changed to eliminate some samples before it was released but haven't ever heard about the purple rain connection. ah but wikipedia says it is so.

keythhtyek, Thursday, 3 November 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

I'd probably put it in the top five or so for 93 (saying A LOT, as it was a banner year for weirdo indie pop)

a phenomenal record and my pick for best HNIA lp

sleeve graphic is not too shabby either:
