Who will remix anyone these days? Who do you see keep popping up on the b-sides of 12"s?

I'm thinking:

four tet remixes?

let me guess, lots of drab 2nd rate indie acts?

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 29 May 2005 10:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Rather than the out-and-out whores, I'm more interested in the artists who appear to create a distinct individual aesthetic out of mostly remix work - Ewan Pearson in 2003, Tiefschwarz in 2004... maybe this year will be James Holden?

(Black Strobe and Jacques Lu Cont are good choices here too but their impact has been more spread out over time)

(ha x-post now)

Steve Bug seems to be spreading it around quite a lot this year.

Mathew Jonson? For the Swayzak record and "Extrapoliert" and some other ones, I think. Extrapoliert definitely a "big" remix.

Cornelius bridged Fantasma and Point with mostly remix work.

Four Tet is the King of Fucking Meh.

I'm more interested in the artists who appear to create a distinct individual aesthetic out of mostly remix work

...and in Tiefschwarz's case almost completely fail to carry that over to their own work!

Four Tet is zzzzz.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:14 (eighteen years ago) link

agreed. even worse is the indie critic jizzing over his new record, WOW IT MIGHT BE JAZZ AND THERE ARE GUITARS, I AM THROUGH THE FUCKING LOOKING GLASS INTO AVANT-GARDIA HERE, THIS IS THE MOST OUT THERE MOMENT OF MY LIFE. OF MY LIFE

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I once told him "My friend really likes your album."
i've got no comment on FT's new album (ok, i do - it sucks), but i'd like to defend a lot of his remix work -

the man's sound isn't really about BLINK BLINK BEAT WAKEUP WHOA-HO! it's soft-percussive irising-out from pop songs, bells and clicks that push out from the cracks in the original. at its worst it's merely pretty, but the 'boring' criticism seems more fair when applied to the genre as a whole, than at four tet in particular. (in other words, don't leave out Boards of Canada, pedro, etc.)

i think four tet's "Skttrbrain" (Radiohead) and "Breathe" (Sia) remixes are substantially better than the originals.

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:47 (eighteen years ago) link

OTM Ronan. I still liked Rounds though, must find a copy of Everything Ecstatic.

Not a Marcello Carlin fan, I see (it was his favourite threat for 5 minutes).
I actually liked "Pause" Kv_Nol! Still annoying though

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm a big Marcello fan (sometimes), but must have missed that. I thought you were actually doing some you-talkin'-to-me? bs about our difference of opinion.

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, as a whole, "folktronica" has Four tet and only one other act as its critical/public faces. And it's very telling that I can't remember the other act at all. But it ain't any of the Melodic peeps, who I'd hardly accuse of having much in the way of folk to them anyway.

Some of the last 4 years of Cornelius' work is a bit like what Four Tet would produce if he was any good. As it is...

What's Cornelius done since Point? (genuine q)

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:22 (eighteen years ago) link

That's only two examples of remixes by Trent. And I think he was in "I'm Afraid of Americans" instead of merely remixing it. But you may be right. I think he sticks to himself mostly. He's extremely self-centered. And that's an understatement.

I actually like some Four Tet remixes, but he seems to never turn one down. Beth Orton and the Doves?

Cornelius also remixes a lot but most are top-notch.

What's Cornelius done since Point? (genuine q)

PM: Point reMixes, which was done via making available Point samples on his website for producers to download; CM2, an 11 or so track collection of mixes he did between '99 and 2003 (kd lang, the Avalanches, Manic Street Preachers, Gerling, Blur...), 'Wataridori'/'Wataridori 2' for the Matador anniversary comp and the Wire Tapper, a mystery EP that I found recently and may send to the YSI thread one day and recent mixes for Kings of Convenience and Bloc Party, though his website is always highlighting random stuff he's done for the Japanese market. Plus his radio show and art show stuff. He's been busy, but he really needs to get out of his ambient/acoustica phase and re-insert some of the happy and the tech-sounds back into his music.

That Salon Music track is stunning.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, and his remix of "Since I Left You" is beautiful too, one of the few external Avalanches remixes that I really like.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:05 (eighteen years ago) link

That Four Tet Sia mix is fucking gorgeous, you mentalists.

I second Black Strobe actually. With a few notable exceptions (Depeche Mode, Tiefschwarz), they usually seem to go on glowery-synth-plus-womp-womp-bassline autopilot and there's a couple of occasions where they just haven't bothered to fit the track with the vocal at all (like that awful Sister Saviour mix). I like to think that they're the anti-Tiefschwarz, in that they're saving all the good bits for their own records.

I defy anyone to top The Avalanches, mind. Badly Drawn Boy + Manics + Belle and Sebastian + The Concretes. God knows who this year. Probably Coldplay or someone. (ACK xpost!)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Although frankly Jacques Lu Cont doing The Music and Starsailor is pretty fucking poor.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Mybe i'm reading the wrong reviews (or the right ones) but Ronan's pastiche of what critics say about Four Tet seems way off the mark. Hebden is amazingly talented but i must say i don't like his recent stuff so much. As far as people on this thread saying he's dull - well, I can't think of a higher recommendation, i should go and check out the new record!

Although frankly Jacques Lu Cont doing The Music and Starsailor is pretty fucking poor.

it's often seemed as if jlc is deliberately choosing the biggest sow's ears around, just to see if he can make a silk purse out of them - he succeeds with starsailor, amazingly enough.

If we're looking at the entire history of remixing from year one it's probably Tom Moulton, no? Even five years back you'd still get Tom Moulton mixes on trad-garage records.

I consider myself a remix slut rather than a remix whore, money is not the goal, it's a case of promiscuity being its own reward.

That Salon Music track is stunning. Oh, and his remix of "Since I Left You" is beautiful too, one of the few external Avalanches remixes that I really like.

OTM. I might put the Avalanches one up, I listen to it far more than the original.

I defy anyone to top The Avalanches, mind. Badly Drawn Boy + Manics + Belle and Sebastian + The Concretes.

Ah, but BDB was a success, furthermore, he has his moments and this was definitely one of them. However, this remix was beaten by the Minotaur Shock mix of the same AND Nick Faber's mix of 'Once Around The Block'. The Manics always sound far, far better remixed - ask Cornelius, Sterolab and the Chemicals. The Avs' Sean Penn mix is one of the best remakes of the decade. The two for B+S and the Concretes are pretty average, though both bands are special and the Concretes' original still outdoes the remix.

JLC, OTOH, did succeed with the Starsailor mix, though Phil Spector did a lot to make that period of the band remotely listenable in the first place.

Which reminds me: past whores would definitely include Nick Faber and the Chemicals. And RJD2 definitely gets around. The dude improved on The Polyphonic Spree and even Tweet got fiddled with.

In addition to busta and luda, Jadakiss loves to whore himself, but I guess he needs the money since his "broke" ass can't go platinum.

whutwhutwhut, Thursday, 2 June 2005 07:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't be so quick to damn Black Strobe's remixes.

There was the amazing Martini Brothers one, a real signature electrohouse record at a very early stage of things. Then there's the Dave Clarke and Justin Robertson ones and the more tracky one of that Moscow Reise track on Goodlife. All very good, I do agree they save their more personal touch for their own tracks, they don't do the Tiefschwarz thing for remixes, ie gut a track completely and start again.

It seemed a good idea at the time but now you listen to their album!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:06 (eighteen years ago) link

My faves are for Sir Drew (Jam and Lewis take electrohouse back) and W.I.T. (bleepy romantic antics).
Yeah actually I forgot WIT, that one is ace. I can't remember which one the Sir Drew is but I'm sure it's on some mix I have.
