there isn't a better one. but some that are pretty close. like
Sly's "Fresh." Lee Dorsey's "Yes We Can." The first Meters album. Brown's own "Sex Machine." The JB comp of his 1970 material, which contains the long "Sex Machine" sans the fake audience. Funkadelic's "One Nation." Dyke and the Blazers are good too, the Ohio Players, the Bar-Kays...but there aren't any funk songs and very few other songs I love as much as "Funky Drummer" and "Talkin' Loud," nope.

Some that are as good or better :

Isaac Hayes 'hot buttered soul'

Isaac Hayes 'to be continued'.

James Brown 'sex machine..live'.

James Brown etc 'James Brown's funky people'.

James Brown etc 'James Brown's funky people 2'.

The J.B's 'food for thought'.

Funkadelic 'funkadelic'.

Funkadelic 'free your mind..'.

Lightnin' Rod 'hustler's convention'.

Not necessarily better but up there, if you want to cross the equator:

Jorge Ben, Africa Brasil

In the Jungle Groove is really a comp album. Don't get me wrong, JB is the baddest mother out there, but Fela Kuti has better LP's than JB. But as for funk compilations of a single artist, In the Jungle Groove is the archetype.

There's a Riot Goin' On is the best album ever made by anybody

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 30 May 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

not better but equal: *Sex Machine* by JB, "Tramp" by Otis & Carla

not far behind: *There's A Riot Going On*, *Fresh*, *Stand!* *Greatest Hits* by S & the FS, *Working in A Coal Mine: The Best of Lee Dorsey*, *Music for Your Mama* by Funkadelic.

one step beyond: *On The Corner* by Miles Davis, *Dancing In Your Head* by Ornette Coleman

Hmmm. At least in theory, you could make the case that JB's 1969-72 music is the purest distillation of the form and that "Jungle Groove" is therefore the muthalode. But in terms of actual enjoyability it's not even my favourite JB single-disc comp (not without "Sex Machine" and "Mother Popcorn" and "Cold Sweat".) So I'd personally rather listen to something by Sly or P-Funk or Earth Wind & Fire. (But I think In The Jungle Groove belongs in every household regardless.)
