Taking Sides: PIL's Public Image VS Metal Box

im currently reading rip it up and start again am scratching my head as to why metal box is better than the first PIL album. apart from the very last track on their debut (in which strangely, reynolds finds much to praise), that first album seems to be absolutely perfect.

metal box however, seems patchy by comparison and doesnt seem to sustain impact as long as public image. it seems kind of patchy in fact. quite erratic even, almost maddeningly so. if asked me to recommend a PIL album to them, i would definitely opt for the debut. it rocks HARD.

blahbariantheoriginal, Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The first album is not even in the same musical universe as Metal box which is one of my favourite albums ever.

Sorry blah, but no comparison.

Kris England., Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

metal box. that's just the way it is.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

'Fodderstompf' is fantastic. I find it hard to choose between both albums.

robertw, Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd choose the first but 'Religion' and 'Annalisa' both drag on a bit. Otherwise, perfect.

robertw, Sunday, 29 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Metal Box is a lot better - more inventive, more expansive, more influential.
Pretty much the band agree as well, citing the weaker songs and the more hurried
recording of the first. I've heard the "re-recorded" first album intended for the
American market but never released. Mind-blowing.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always prefered 'Flowers of Romance' to either of the first two. I enjoy Wobble's basslines, but I wouldn't say he was one of the best of the era. I guess I just like the starkness and the subtler production of 'Flowers,' plus that great drum sound.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, Flowers of Romance has always been my favorite..

daria g (daria g), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the debut still has roots in the Pistols sound, while Metal Box makes a pretty clean break from that.

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. Metal Box gets the praise b/c it's more expansive and, thus, "post-punk." It's also the better record.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 30 May 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Annalisa" and "Public Image" are the only songs that I listen to from Public Image.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lowlife" is at least as good as either of those

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Analisa" alone ensures the supremacy of First Issue. Much as I love Metal Box, there's not much of a contest here.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Poptones > anything from Public Image

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i do like that first album though, and agree that metal box is patchy but it's still superior despite that imo.

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy Wobble's basslines, but I wouldn't say he was one of the best of the era.

But his tone is incredible.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 30 May 2005 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"I've heard the "re-recorded" first album intended for the
American market but never released. Mind-blowing."

where can one hear/buy this?

re: the bass, wobble might be starting to become my most favourite bassist, ever. that bassline he kicks in with on the first album is just immortal. one thing about PIL that makes them extra great is their overall sound and production, its just utterly stunning and almost like stainless steel. (excuse the corny similie, but) its like the kitchen devil knife of post-punk!

blahbariantheoriginal, Monday, 30 May 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

love 'em both, but come on ... metal box is something a bit special. it trounces almost everything else in the universe.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

that said: i would love to hear this re-recorded first album, aye.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the first one best. It's funnier. Last time I sistened to "Metal Box" (which I liked shitloads at one point) it just seemed like a bit of a fucking din, to be honest.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

...but then again, maybe I'll pick up another copy at some poinmt and get back into it. I just don't feel very motivated to do so @ this moment, whereas I quite fancy listening to "religion" right now actually.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Metal Box (Second Edition) = TEH GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME

I'd like to hear that "re-recorded" debut also and IM makes an interesting point abt Flowers of Romance, it sounds much much much better to my ears now than it did in 1981.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

apart from the very last track on their debut (in which strangely, reynolds finds much to praise), that first album seems to be absolutely perfect

The last track's one of the best things on it! I can live without both Religions and Attack

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fodderstompf" is no "Theme".

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, it's miles better

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the re-recorded "foddenstompf" is the b-side of the "death disco" 12".

haitch (haitch), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Metal Box," although the song "Public Image" is PiL's greatest moment.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 30 May 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the rerecorded debut from a longtime friend of Lydon's who wouldn't give me a cassette (this was pre-CD-R) copy, despite much pleading on my part. One or two songs sounded simply remixed - "Public Image" and "Annalisa", but there were entirely new songs and radical remakes of the rest. I seem to recall no spoken word "Religion", a way more "Poptones"-like Arabic-sounding version of the musical "Religion" and I think the rerecorded "Fodderstompf" from the "Death Disco" 12" may have been included, but with voiceovers. One of the "new" songs was the best thing they ever did. The general effect was that of the first album recorded as part of "Metal Box" sessions, but with a better selection of tunes. I'd kill just to hear it again.
It was supposed to have been released in the US by Warner Bros (WB even acknowledged this in a Rolling Stone article), but nothing happened.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

When is this from?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Metal Box. I rarely listen to the first one and find "Annalisa", "Lowlife", and "Attack" to be very weak. "Religion I" isn't really necessarry, and "Religion II" would be better if the drums were in both speakers. "Theme", "Public Image", and "Fodderstompf" are great, though. Especially "Theme". I'm not sure if that's a better opener or not than "Albatross". That should probably be a TS. Metal Box only falls short on the instrumentals -- "Another" should've been on the album, "Socialist" isn't terrible but it doesn't hold my interest, and "Radio 4" takes a bit long to develop. The rest is classic, although "The Suit" is a bit nondescript musically.

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish "No Birds Do Sing" had more of a bite to it vocally, too -- where's your snarl, John?

I'd love to hear that re-recorded first album -- it sounds like it'd trump Metal Box.

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fodderstompf" is the weakest song on there IMHO. im kinda glad its tacked at the end as i can then pretend its not there. it sounds really lightweight compared to everything you hear before it.

blahbariantheoriginal, Monday, 30 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never really been able to get into metal box but first edition is classic!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 30 May 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh hold on. Listening to 'Metal Box' now. This is hitting me. What BASS!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 30 May 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Public Image Ltd. is a better overall album. Metal box, just doesn't have the same spirit to it.
Oh and Flowers of Romance seconded.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 30 May 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

metal bok isn't about spirit: it's about weed paranoia, hatred and death. that's what makes it so fucking awe-inspiring.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 30 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

metal box just seems to veer all about the place. the first track albartross seems to have all of no aim. then just when it picks up the pace, some dirge-like track will take it off somewhere else. its not very focused. i know part of the point was for it not to be played in one flow like a normal album, and that a lot/some of the songs were made up as they were recorded, but unless its jazz or some improv-material, is this actually always a good thing? i value writing.

blahbarianthe1st, Monday, 30 May 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wobble said in an old interview that he prefered the first album, that Metal Box 'needed editing.'

robertw, Monday, 30 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Flowers of Romance for me.

I just wish they would have followed this direction for another album that was even more far out and abstract.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

When I first bought Metal Box, it didn't do much for me at all. But there's a kind of catchiness to things like "Poptones" & "Careering" that wasn't immediately apparent to me. I eventually came to appreciate it in its entirety, but the last time I tried to play it, I was pretty bored, to be honest.

When people talk about a re-recorded version of the first album that I have no idea how to get my hands on it makes me want to punch, strangle, squeeze, maim...

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I love seeing the American Bandstan clip from the Metal Box era. I need to listen to that album more, but it never hit me the way many, many other post-punk 'greats' did (and a lot of supposedly not-greats, like 'Flowers').

I.M. (I.M.), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

When people talk about a re-recorded version of the first album that I have no idea how to get my hands on it makes me want to punch, strangle, squeeze, maim...

seriously. WHY was this not included on the box set?!?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I love seeing the American Bandstan clip from the Metal Box era.

where can i see this? is it online??

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The American Bandstand clip is pretty surreal, yeah, I mean from what I remember of that show I never would have thought THEY would have been on it, let alone playing THAT. Most significant thing I ever saw on that show was Wall of Voodoo, which isn't saying much.

The PIL Bandstand clip used to be online at this site called Homestead, along with a bunch of other post punk clips. But the site went down awhile back, not sure where to get it now, exactly.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

look for PILonABS.mov here:

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

holy crap, is it entertaining. i'd love to have a tape of dick clark's reaction after the show.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably would have been much the same as his reaction to Michael Moore's questions in Columbine.

Anyway, here's me on the third greatest album ever made...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm absolutely intrigued to know: what are the first two, Marcello?

I loved First Isue imediately but took me considerably longer to "get" Metal Box.

Both are great albums but both could do with a little judicious pruning imo.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Me on the second greatest (nb: please take analysis with multiple pinches of salt as I got the underlying story behind the album completely wrong and I saw Stubbs' Uncut piece on it about a month later and went AAARGHHH!! Still, it's all about what the listener gets out of it, or at least what my tortured mind got out of it...)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And the greatest?

C'mon, I can hardly bear the suspense...

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

So great that it was too great to write about in my own blog!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Based solely on your review and assessment I have just ordered that title, Marcello - so it had bloody well better be as good as you say, or that's £20.99 you owe me!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You missed the small print which reads: "The views expressed here are those of the author, who holds no obligation to refund or recompense consumers for any purchases which they may make as a result of his recommendations."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

its escalator isn't it? i don't even have to look. but i will. cos i need marcello to convince me again. cos i never "got" it.

2 & 3 are easy.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, im ordering that album as well. it better be good!

blahbariantheoriginal, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

heheh Carla you're doing brisk business in the ILM marketplace this fine morn!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

Just took listen to a few clips of this Carla Bley record. I must say it strikes me as most pleasantly bizarre.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

that american bandstand clip is great. thanks.

Amon (eman), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

Every year, PiL gets a little closer to being my favorite band.

I have some burned copy of a bootleg that has this tracklisting:

PIL (PUBLIC IMAGE LTD) 8-10 110m
TV + Several live performance : public image promo 78 / chant interv. check it out79 / death disco promo79 / poptones ogwt 1980 / careering ogwt 1980 / careering NEW YORK, GREAT GILDERSLEEVES 1980 / Public Image NEW YORK, GREAT GILDERSLEEVES 1980 / Another NEW YORK, GREAT GILDERSLEEVES 1980 / Low Life NEW YORK, GREAT GILDERSLEEVES 1980 / Bad Baby NEW YORK, GREAT GILDERSLEEVES 1980 / Press Conference 1980/ Poptones american bandstand 1980/ Careering american bandstand 1980/ Interv. Tom Snyder 1980/ Flowers Of Romance TOTP 1981/ 82 ch 5 roseland 82/ this is not a love song 83 the tube/ interview 84 / bad life rock of the eighties 84/ public image rock of the eighties 84/ Lowlife rock of the eighties 84/ bodies rock of the eighties 84/ Annalisa rock of the eighties 84/ judge judy

It gets so bad after the "this is not a love song" video that I've never even gotten to the last part, intriguingly titled "judge judy"

But - the American Bandstand performance is perfect, unthinkable on television today. It makes you melancholy watching it, actually, because it just doesn't even seem fathomable that something like that could happen anymore. Same with the Tom Snyder interview.

I love the Sex Pistols as well, but they strike me as perhaps the band with biggest enhancement with visuals. That is, watching the Sex Pistols is miles better than just listening to the Sex Pistols.

PiL is different. Lydon is a camera magnet, as usual, but Levine and Jah Wobble actually seem to shy away from the camera. The music stands on its own. Classic band.

Z S, Thursday, 30 August 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

And I still want to know about that "re-recorded" first album.

Mark G, Thursday, 30 August 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

"Judge Judy" is Lydon when he was on Judge Judy, surely?

Is Chant plus interview on Check It Out the one that ends with a massive expletive filled rant from Wobble before he walks out on it? (And if not, does anyone know what this is?)

aldo, Thursday, 30 August 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yes it is. Lydon walks out as well, while one of the hosts trys to calm her co-host down and prevent a fight between themselves and PiL. It's hilarious.

Z S, Thursday, 30 August 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

Lydon goes in a "I'm not biting!" sort of way, after provocation (they did a voxpop on the street w/ "punks" who just happened to be Angelic Upstarts).

Wobble goes in a highly sweary way.

Levene stays and is all "OK, what shall we talk about then?"

Walker, umm, dunno forgot.

Mark G, Thursday, 30 August 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

sexyDancer, Thursday, 30 August 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

i didnt like metal box at first but i now think its one of the most amazing albums ever made. i hope after repeated plays i still think that or ill be dissapointed.

mr x, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

It was the same for me as well! I was utterly puzzled by it for many years, not a single song did anything for me, including Poptones & Careering. In one ear and out the other until years later I decided to give it another go and was really surprised at what I found.

Bimble, Saturday, 29 September 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

I won't say they're like two different bands but each album serves a different purpose in my mind. Wasn't a chunk of the debut already written by Lydon beforehand? _Metal Box_ is almost like his REAL coming out as an artist in his own right.

Mr. Odd, Saturday, 29 September 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Odd I just wrote you an email (unrelated to this thread) please AIM me or get on so I can AIM you.

Bimble, Saturday, 29 September 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

Revive!

(RIP, Bimble goddammit -- your enthusiasm was amazing)

Second Edition (let's be honest -- I've never heard this from a metal box) is still so, so great. The bit "Memories" kicks in increasingly feels like the moment PIL began -- full of dynamics and insights the Pistols never had.

Thumbs up to Marcello's blog above (tho I would note that despite trying to correct for the record about Lydon singing "Albatross" not Wobble he still credits Wobble incorrectly with intoning a few lines -- can't ever miss an opportunity to correct for the record!).

Did anyone ever hear Levene and Wobble do their "in dub" version of this live a few years back?

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 11 August 2013 13:31 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

'Memories' will always be a PiL favourite for me, each element of the track is killer, from the rhythm, to the bassline to the guitar playing. That's before I get to that neat effect they achieve by splicing differently mixed sections together. When the chorus kicks in, it's like you're suddenly in the room with the band.

...and the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe and SAW! (Turrican), Sunday, 17 August 2014 21:55 (eleven years ago)

Have owned both "Metal Box" (the 4MWB reissue, I'm not rich dammit) and "Second Edition", and can confidently state that it's a greater album on 45RPM. There's also something about the fussiness of having to flip sides and fuss with crepe paper sheets every few minutes that fits with their irritating aesthetic & makes "Metal Box" more than it might otherwise be.

a lot of really bad records changed my life (staggerlee), Monday, 18 August 2014 03:49 (eleven years ago)

(the 4MWB reissue, I'm not rich dammit)

Not anymore, yr not!
