Cyann and Ben - Happy Like An Autumn Tree
Earth - Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword
Damon and Naomi - The Earth Is Blue
The Perceptionists - Black Dialogue
Swayzak - Loops From the Bergerie and Groovetechnology
The Dirtbombs - If You Don't Already Have A Look
Quasimodo - The Further Adventures of Lord Quas
William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got (the title track is one of my all-time favorites, just wondering if the rest of the album is worth getting)

That's the "good" Earth album right? Or is that 2?

the Damon and Naomi is fantastic. there's a lot more of Kurihara's guitar than on 'With Ghost', and horns on a few songs as well, which makes for a more interesting sound than the last several albums. I like the songs here, too, and the trad. cover this time is 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', which is lovely. i'd def. recommend it.

I'm also really interested in checking out the new Earth album, Dissolution III, based on a couple reviews I've read.

I'll check out the Damon and Naomi album, then. I generally liked their stuff, but they've always seemed like an act that could go either way with their next album.

Dirtbombs = greatest live band in America.

Now, if they're not playing near you, this compilation is a pretty solid substitute.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 30 May 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd agree except for Sleater-Kinney! but the Detroit Cobras had the misfortune of having the Dirtbombs as their opening act, making the DCs look like the relative pretenders that they are.

I wonder how this thread is going to turn out. It seems to me that whenever you ask ILM whether you should buy a record, you end up buying that one and three more.

second recommendation on the D&N - i think it's their best sounding record, and their best songs since more sad hits

The William DeVaughn is surprisingly good; not the typical hit-plus-filler of the time. Maybe one or two songs are knockoffs of "Be Thankful," but even then it's choice stuff.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got some ones I'm teetering about, too -

Daniel Johnston - Songs of Pain or The Late, Great Daniel Johnston
Estelle - The 18th Day
Amerie - Touch
Herman Dune - Not on Top

If anyone has thoughts/feelings on these...

The only album of yours that I've heard, Gear, is the Perceptionists one, which was initially really appealing, spiky and adamant, but which faded to blurry after a while. (cf. Blackalicious' Blazing Arrow.)

The Further Adventures of Lord Quas you can pretty much guarantee is going to be excellent even if you haven't heard it. And I have. And it is. (Although one of my favourite tracks: "seasons change" isn't on the retail version. don't know where you can get it.)

I haven't heard Loops from the Bergerie yet but I don't think that Groovetechnology is worth your cash. Its too all over the place and I already have the really good tracks on other mixes. You may not... but.....

the cyan and ben is rathr quite nice, but not entirely "amazing". others fawn over the damon and naomi, but the tracks ive heard are rather thin. i've yet to really like any of the d&n, despite all signs indicating i should. the only earth stuff out of the recent to surface records i've heard is the live one on troubleman. to me, its a bit to easy. that said, i wouldnt write them off in the very least. all of this, of course, IMHO...and only careful wariness, not deep lack of interest. i had the cyan and ben on pretty regular play for a while...its just that ive found more enjoyment in some old jewled antler records, the boredoms sunhouse/sea drum, L's holy mountain, jane, mountains, and cortez e ramahlo.

Daniel Johnston: "Songs of Pain" is unstoppable, esp. "Never Relax."

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the good Earth album is 2. The new one is bad, according to our friend DDB, but I haven't heard it myself. Heroin is bad for you, yaknow.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 30 May 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Earth album is no good. Great title, bad music. Get the new Skullflower instead. It's called Orange Canyon Mind and it's got a Roger Dean-ish cover.

The Dirtbombs comp is great, especially if you've economically avoided buying the 20-30 7"s it collects.
