'blazing arrow' or something. but then i thought this was going to be a slightly more interesting 'when hiphop became rap' question.

If there is such a thing, it was the Gilbert O'Sullivan lawsuit.

hiphop became rap when it became a recorded music and songs entered the picture.

Gin and Juice because that is the first hip hop/rap song I remember hearing walking down the hallway in my dorm at Wellesley, clearly if other white girls there were listening to it, it was ALL OVER. I would place that at fall 1995.

nb hiphopists I'm not being overly serious here

What do you mean when hip-hop turned into rap? It was called rap before hip-hop was ever coined! "Rapper's Delight", anyone?

When threads like this are created to discuss it.

Hip-Hop was invented as a culture roughly between 1969 and 1972 by DJ's such as Grandmaster Flowers, Pete DJ Jones, Kool Herc, etc.

Rap Records were invented when Fatback Band took on rapper King Tim III as an opening act, and let him rap on a b-side in 1979. Rapper's Delight followed by just a few months.

I think this is what was meant by the Hip-Hop became rap thing.

This thread should be called "How Hip-Hop changes guard, and when".

The only Wu album I ever loved all the way through with repeat listens is the first.

My last loved Hip-Hop album was alos released November 1995. This is why I typically in conversation say "not much in Hip-Hop after 1996 for me."

Aha, so Alfred, you do agree that rock is dead!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The correct answer is Run DMC. From the very start of their recording career, that is.

Sugar Hill Gang, "Rapper's Delight"

briefly resurrected and then (see previous post via Alex)

Mase has down syndrome, which became marketable after 1995.

There're may've been good releases after 1996, but down syndrom R&B rappers would've never been allowed in the "keep it real" era, nor before.

Thanks Alex, for ILLustrating the truth.
