So, my best friend wants to get into rap...

I'm a huge rap fan, but I own so much of it that I can't decide what to put on this mixtape for my friend who doesn't even like rap. I want to put a combination of mainstream (maybe some Geto Boys/Wu Tang era stuff) and backpacker type songs (Jedi Mind Tricks, El-P, MF Doom, etc.)

What songs are essential for this mix? I hope to get some help with the running order as well, but that can come later.

Geto Boys- My Mind's Playin' Tricks on Me is required.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Notorious B.I.G. "Juicy"
Raekwon "Ice Cream"
Public Enemy "Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos"
that GRINDIN' jam
tribe called quest "i left my wallet in el segundo"
wu tang "protect ya neck"

i don't know anything about hip hop.

>So, my best friend wants to get into rap...

Tell him he's at least ten years too late, and not to bother.

Actually also:
TLC: Not Too Proud to Beg
NWA: Fuck The Police
Public Enemy: Fight the Power
Naughty by Nature: OPP
DJ Jazzy Jeff: Humpty Song
Sir Mix a Lot: Baby Got Back

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

where's the love for KRISS KROSS?

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

El-P - Stepfather Factory
Murs - You and I
Wu-Tang - Tearz (some people don't like it, so maybe you should choose something else)
Jedi Mind Tricks - Retaliation
Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks on Me (seconded)
Aesop Rock - Labor Days

It might help if we knew what your friend does like...assuming you are trying to find stuff that will creep in on him. If he doesn't like rap categorically, you probably want to tailor the mix towards things that are likely to open him up to hiphop in favor of tracks that are "better" examples of what you like. I mean, if he's an indie rocker, he'll be into stuff that a black metal dude wouldn't be and vice-versa.

holla by ghostface
nas is like by nas
hip hop by dead prez (i know loads of people who say this was the first hip hop track they liked)

robin (robin), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This friend of mine is a real "indie fuck". I'm not so much looking for "crossover tracks" to ease her in, as much as great tracks that will hopefully "open her eyes" to the fact that not all rap sucks. "Memorial Day" by The Perceptionists is a great example...that's one rap song that she'll admit she really likes.

Frankie Robinson, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If your friend is a girl, Beautiful by Snoop Dogg has to go on there.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lyrics Born - Bad Dreams
Aesop Rock - Daylight
Sage Francis - Makeshift Patriot

These have all worked for me in the past when converting the unconvertable...

"Mama Said Knock You Out"

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The album that got me BACK into rap was "Daily Operation" by Gangstarr. Classic beats & rhymes, beginning to end.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Del - "No Need for Alarm"
EPMD - "Please Listen to My Demo"
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "T.R.O.Y."
Soul Food - "Cell Therapy"
Public Enemy - "Can't Do Nuttin for Ya Man"
ET CETERA
get canonical on her azz, basically

pdf -

I'm surprised you think it's too late to get into rap. After all, by the same logic, one might say that it's too late to get into Miles Davis' fusion-era works.

Anyway, lots of good suggestions in this thread already, so I'll just throw out a few relative obscurities that I think stand with the canonical stuff tremendoid is talking about:

Son of Bazerk - Bazerk Bazerk Bazerk!
Redman - Whut? The Album
The Coup - Steal This Album

Latyrx - Lady Don't Tek No

speaking as somebody that only discovered this 8yr old song recently, i like the old school vibe it has.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

My "bestfriendwhowantstogetintorap" in Japan asked a student there to make him for a mix lke this. What he got was 74 minutes of MOP which didn't work too well so you can rule that out.

xcixxorx, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

that Jimmy M tape sounds pretty solid

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This many years down the line and he's not into hip hop at all? Sounds like a tall order to convince him with a single mixtape. Good luck.

fuckers, Saturday, 1 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

for the indie fuck--

if she likes the perceptionists then you should put
mr. lif--"new man theme" and something by the coup ("50 million ways to kill a CEO?)
then some early kool g rap type stuff and some slick rick--maybe "art of storytelling" or "i own america" as well as the track with ghostface, "the sun".

naturemorte, Saturday, 1 October 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I THINK HE WOULD HAVE TO DO BLACKFACE TO GET INTO THE RAP (LOL BLACK AND WHITE MINSTREL SHOW)
