Well, the actual song is from 1969, but personally, I got to know "Sugar Sugar" through a synthpop cover version that was played a couple times on the radio here in 1982. I never quite managed to grasp the name of the artist/group though. Anyone able to help me out with this one?

It's probably the version by David Gamson, on a Rough Trade 7" from that year or the year before. Just a one-off thing (the b-side was a remix called "Honey Honey"), though Gamson soon joined the post-Rough Trade version of Scritti Politti.

The track's never been on CD as far as I know.

Gamson had another release, a song that first appeared on an NME or similar casette called "No Turn on Red" and later wound up on a Beggars Banquet alternative dance type comp called Sex, Sweat and Blood:

He also was producing stuff w/ Roger Troutman/Zapp.

I think Sugar Sugar was also released under a different name, I heard somebody dj'ing it a year or two ago and was suprised as I thought I was one of the few who would do such a thing, when I went to check it out, it was on a compilation but not credited to Gamson, though it was the same exact song that appears on the Rough Trade 7"(and 12").

You can hear it mixed into an old mix I did-

the Golden Limo mix

And I've been thinking of ways to get it on cd!

I bet it was Tasty Tim's version.

It sure wasn't Wilson Pickett's version!

More concrete: It had female vocals. I think it may possibly have been a Dutch act or something. And I know for certain it was from 1982 (or at least no older than 1981).

Listened to the Gamson one, and apparently that was it. Thanks :-)
