100. Van Morrison, "Tupelo Honey"

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(Let me 'splain: it helps if the artist in question HAS a "best of" compilation covering the period in which the indispensable track was released.)

The original version of every single Madonna song on The Immaculate Collection.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Snrub OTM about Madonna!
(except "Justify My Love" was in its original version, but that one fits better into the other thread)

Seb (Seb), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

46. Altered Images: "Think That It Might"

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

95.-

Not having the original version but an awful mix of Big Time Sensuality off Bjork's greatest hits.

-- elgolfo (evaristocoron...), May 31st, 2005.

Isn't it the "fluke minimix" on there?* if it starts all lazy & swooshy it is, if its kinda parping & horny it's the 'original' (Debut mix).

If so, that was released as the single instead of the version on 'Debut'. Isn't it common practice for GH packages to include 'single' mixes in place of regular versions?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

45. The Who's original studio version of Substitute being left off 30 Years of Maximum R&B box set (the chronologically and sonically incongruous Live at Leeds version being used instead.)

D. Bachyrycz, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

80. Beastie Boys - "Rock Hard" is not on The Sounds of Science

"inexplicably" doesn't really count if they go into detail in the liner notes as to how they tried to get clearance and were refused

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess the same would apply to all those cases where a great song was not included because another label owns the rights.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

44 Ackee 123 by The Beat (I'd put this track on Beat This instead of the distinctively average Click Click)
43 Porpoise Song by The Monkees (my Monkees compilation has two goddawful reformed middle-of-the-road 1980's tracks at the end)

Kim Tortoise, Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

42 "Born on the Bayou" by CCR left off Chronicle 1.

mclaugh (mclaugh), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

blur: 'popscene'

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Popscene's totally explicable too, the tracklisting was decided by fan vote (presumably "fan" awareness of the song was massively lowered by it having been OOP for ten years or whatever)

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't they leave intentionally Popscene off out of spite that nobody bought it?

I'm just recalling things Damon has explicitly said in the press before about this. I could have imagined it, I'm not a huge fan.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Waitresses Best of forgot - Pussy Strut and Quit
The scond Waitresses Best of is a piece of shit - Jimmy Tomorrow, Pussy Strut and Quit all left off.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, the fans voted for 'music is my radar'?

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I've lost count, and this should definitely be in the top 10 unless there's a reason I don't know about, but Neil Young's omission of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" from Decade hurts me in my heart,

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 3 June 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the portable galaxie 500 should have found a way of stuffing all four discs of the box set in there in some way.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 3 June 2005 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

41* "Stone In Love" is conspicuously absent from Journey's Greatest Hits disc.

*count is FUBAR, so I'm just picking up at the last numbered entry...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 3 June 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

>>>Beach Boys - Endless Summer (the 1974 original version)
75 God Only Knows
74 Wouldn't it be Nice
73 Good Vibrations (this was added later)
72 Sloop John B

Instead, they (Capitol and Mike Love) chose:

You're So Good To Me
Girl Don't Tell Me
Wendy
The Girls on the Beach
Let Him Run Wild

Oddly, in 1974 Capitol didn't own the rights to any of the Beach Boys recordings from Sloop John B onwards, hence the lack of any Pet Sounds-era hits.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Friday, 3 June 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Boogie Down Productions, "Stop the Violence"

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 3 June 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Girls On The Beach" is awesome.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

And I personally never thought Endless Summer was to be viewed as a career-spanning retrospective, but rather just the best stuff that came out before Pet Sounds. It's all there pretty much.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Panic In Detroit should've been on ChangesOneBowie, or the ChangesBowie CD reissue

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 3 June 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And I personally never thought Endless Summer was to be viewed as a career-spanning retrospective, but rather just the best stuff that came out before Pet Sounds.

I think this is how it's viewed in retrospect. At the time, Capitol was cashing in with a greatest hits, no?

Oddly, in 1974 Capitol didn't own the rights to any of the Beach Boys recordings from Sloop John B onwards, hence the lack of any Pet Sounds-era hits.

This does sound vaguely familiar now that you say that. It would totally make sense as to why they were omitted.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 3 June 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

A Tribe Called Quest, "Get a Hold"

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

>wow, the fans voted for 'music is my radar'?
>-- N_RQ (bl0cke...), June 2nd, 2005.

Nah, it was the obligatory new track.

Popscene was left off Modern Life Is Rubbish allegedly for the reason that 'no-one' bought the single, which was still a minor UK Top 40 hit, so it wasn't exactly a complete disaster!

The A Michael, Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Who-"Relay" and the other stray Lifehouse singles that aren't "Join Together"

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I love those album tracks on Endless Summer, especially "Let Him Run Wild" and "Wendy"...the REAL problem with that record is that it (like several other BB compliations) uses the non-hit mixes of a couple songs. "Help Me Rhonda" is the worst - that weird volume-knob-wiggling fadeout, the tuneless shouting of "Help me Rhonda, yeah!" instead of the insinuating falsetto....it's ugly.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Where can one find the proper version?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)
