Artists that constantly release new mixes of their hits on their "Best Of" albums rather than releasing the original hit versions

Madonna has been mentioned here on several occasions. Her original 7 inch versions of her 80s hits are very hard to find, simply because those pointless Q Sound mixes by Shep Pettibone were released in place.

However, even worse are Boney M. About every five years, they release a "Best Of" album, consisting of new and updated mixes of their old hits. I don't even think the original versions of their singles are available on CD at all.

Are there any other acts like these two, who constantly refuse to give the record buyers the original versions of their hits?

U2's done that for some stupid reason, presumably twofold: a) they weren't happy with the original versions, b) to get more money from U2 completists.

You wouldn't perchance be referring to New Order, no?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah, New Order is a textbook example!

Pearl Jam's Lost Dogs rarities comp was a bunch of lame re-recordings.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

But I guess their greatest hits comp wasn't like that, so never mind.

Mileage varies tremendously on whether this comes off well or poorly. Ordinarily I'd find it a kind of obnoxious way to make people buy albums they don't actually want.

But Kate Rusby did a record called 10, with different versions of her better songs--slowing them down, changing the instrumentation, etc.--that, in context, seemed like rather a humble and sweet gesture. Along the lines of, "well my fans have already heard the original one, may as well give them a different take. If they like the song a lot maybe they'll go buy the album, but it's not so different that they'd have to."

only 2 of the songs on best of new order are remixes: blue monday 88 and an old but previously unreleased mix of round and round. true faith and blt are mislabeled and 1963-94 is an edit of the original.

The Toy Dolls spring to mind. But not for you lot.

'true faith 94' is indistinguishable from the original, but on 'substance 1987' 'confusion is given a whack new mix.

Of course, getting hold of the original 7" of "Two Tribes" isn't easy. But that is the case with just that one song, not with Frankie Goes To Hollywood in general.

History's dead, dudes.

The original Madonna 7-inch mixes can all be found on their parent albums.

"Two Tribes" - well, you had to be there at the time, but easily obtained second-hand I would have thought.

Not really, no. Not the original 7 inch edit of "Holiday" (longer version on the "Madonna" album). Not the remixed "True Blue" (not at all on any kind of compilation, and the album version is considerably different), not the 7 inch remix of "Express Yourself" (the "Immaculate Collection" version is longer and more dance oriented, while the "Like a Prayer" version is less dance oriented) and there are slight differences to a lot of the others too (particularly "La Isla Bonita").

Not on CD, no. It does exist on CD on a couple of compilations though.

Moral: hang on to your old 7-inches.

Some bands don't have a choice in the matter with which this thread concerns itself, not if Allen Klein owns the rights to their back catalogues anyway.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

? and the Mysterians to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Funnily enough, what with the current Boos thread, the forthcoming anthology of their stuff only includes 'Wake Up' as a ten minute dub version.

As far as I know, I'm one of the few who enjoys "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha! I like it as well, but isn't it a new recording rather than a new mix?

Edward Bax (EdBax), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

Richard Carpenter to thread. It's as if he's in a constant battle with Karen's voice, trying unsuccessfully year after year further to bury her in the mix so that he can reveal himself as Master Arranger. Of course, he fails every time; superheroes would kill to have the power inherent in a Karen Carpenter recording.

huh? AFAIK know of the tracks on there were the original b-sides/outtakes (although the version of "Alone" on there was from the Ten sessions, whereas the previously released b-side version was circa Vs.) however, the Rearviewmirror comp from last year did have new mixes of the 4 songs from Ten that were on it.
