Here's the first one.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No one will remember them.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Coldplay in 20 years = Tears for Fears right about now.

"The Scientist" will probably make for a great cameo in Donnie Darko: The Mid-Life Crisis Years to boot.

POST FOUR

The Ghost of This Is About The Level Of Content This Thread Deserves (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Coldplay's music will experience a major revival in 20 years due to the publicity surrounding the release of Apple Martin's psych-folk multimedia project.

They will be the Sugarloaf of the 00s.

Steely Dan

number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine... number nine...

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Steely Dan?!

All added up, Coldplay doesn't even add up to a trimming from Donald Fagen's big toenail.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

About the same as the general attitude towards U2 is today.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Very few people will know who they are. A couple of compilations will be in print, but the records will be forgotten.

"Yellow" will be track 23 on the "Nuggets XIV: Wheezy Rarities from the Early 00's Dronepop Era!" box set in 2026.

Whoplay?

Vague amorphous distaste, engendered by the likelyhood of their use as "happy shopping music" in the 2025 incarnation of Restoration Hardware.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Given "Radiohead : Pink Floyd", I would humbly suggest "Coldplay : Supertramp".

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

General answer to this and all other similar questions: I won't be alive in twenty or thirty years' time so frankly don't give a shit.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say Radiohead = Yes. Coldplay are more like Pink Floyd now, as much as it pains me to admit it.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you suggesting that Pink Floyd were a diluted and commercialised version of Yes?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead : Coldplay = The Smiths : The Housemartins

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Lord no, I neglected to point out that I love all the bands in the equation barring Coldplay. I'm thinking in rockist terms - the Floyd weren't great players, nor are Coldplay, the Floyd were pretty short on hooks, so are Coldplay, and they both have more of that plod thing going on. Aside from superficial similarities like the in-house art guy (Stanley Donwood = Roger Dean) and the dwarves on vocals, Radiohead are the Yes to Clodplay's Floyd because there's much more going on in the music, and these days I would rather listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans than Dark Side Of The Moon.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

King Crimson would be a more apposite comparison point for Radiohead in this context.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I'd be prepared to go as far as "I would rather listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans than Dark Side Of The Moon." (if you'd said Fragile or Close To The Edge, no problem), but I certainly see your point.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally I'd rather listen to King Crimson's Red than any of these. Makes Kid A sound like the Kids From Fame, as they say.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm happy to think of Radiohead as the modern-day Crimso, seeing as I always thought Just sounded less like Shot By Both Sides and more like Red.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And to be fair to the Floyd, I don't think they ever had Coldplay's glib aspirations to be "important".

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wall to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

face it, people want to say coldplay will be forgotten but they wont. they might not be 'cool' and praised by hipsters and trendies or ILMers, but the masses will most likely know of them and regard them favourably, just as they do now.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

or it will be just as it for many (but not all) now:

zzzzzz (which is what comes after x+y!)

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You could substitute "George W Bush" for "Coldplay" there. Just because the "masses" like them doesn't mean they're any good. 1933 German election to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello - I stand corrected. All I can add is that Mad Rog comes across as someone who means it (maaaaan), which is something I can not say for Chris Martin. And thank you, blahbarian - you should copyright that zzzzzz remark, now.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ive actually been trying to figure out just what is so bad about keane, coldplay, snow patrol and the absolute worst of the lot - athlete, after listening to stuff that might have fallen into the easy listening and singer songwriter boxes a few decades back and i dont think its that their songs are that bad - some of them are actually really quite good (honest guv), its that namby pamby, weedy, self-aware ohsodelicateandsensitive forced gentility they sing with (especially that cunt from athlete) that makes complete idiots think theyre full of Real Emotion (TM) or whatever. give me astral weeks (or something else that perhaps shouldnt be used to compare here) anyday.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead : Coldplay = The Smiths : The Housemartins

No, I wouldn't say Coldplay are that much better than Radiohead. Not at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"face it, people want to say coldplay will be forgotten but they wont. they might not be 'cool' and praised by hipsters and trendies or ILMers, but the masses will most likely know of them and regard them favourably, just as they do now."

Uh huh? Let me make sure I've got this right: you're suggesting that Coldplay will continue to be popular amongst "the masses"; and will therefore continue to receive a number of votes that will continue to guarantee them a regular place in the higher reaches of charts of people's favourite albums, many years from now; in exactly the same way as these same "masses" have remained steadfastly loyal to their other favourites in the past; such as The Backstreet Boys, Bros, Take That, New Kids On the Block...?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i dont mean that they will still be in the running for endless number ones, just that they will probably achieve that sort of establishment-endorsed 'veteran' status that bands get after sticking around for a certain number of years.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

So in other words, in twenty or thirty years time, Radiohead will still appear in lists of people's favourite lbums (albeit not as high as they do at present) but Coldplay's songs will be played more often twords the end of discos after people's weddings when all the aging rellies have got pissed and want to have a knees-up?

I wouldn't disagree with that at all.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I can handle that, because I think that if there is a benevolent higher power, he, she or it will not ever allow Coldplay to be as painfully "everywhere" as U2 are.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

U2 will be like the stones in about ten years. people who never liked them will suddenly find themselves thinking they have to go and see them 'at least once' (before they die unsatisfied, of course). coldplay will be like current-state U2 in about two decades, probably.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point.

U2 are the clearly the most glaring exception that proves that there are no rules.... or at least, none that make any sort of sense.

(x-post)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"U2 will be like the stones in about ten years. people who never liked them will suddenly find themselves thinking they have to go and see them 'at least once' (before they die unsatisfied, of course)."

I fear you may well be right.

Suddenly and for the first time I find myself actually feeling glad that I've already seen U2; and while their equivalents to "Last Time" and "Satisfaction" were still fresh too.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Radiohead : Coldplay = The Smiths : The Housemartins"

"No, I wouldn't say Coldplay are that much better than Radiohead. Not at all."

Geir, I have to admit you are nothing if not wholly consistent.

Consistently barking bloody mad, 'tis true; but consistent nonetheless.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only are Coldplay melodically superior to Radioheads, but as also are contemporary purveyors of proper modern music such as Kate T Tunstill. If more people listen to Kate T Tunstill album I Got My Eye Stuck In This Telescope instead of the Nun Inch Nails then more people would be alive, and not inject themselves with incesticide.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Comstock Carabinieri, I'm afraid you are just barking mad.
