Defend the Indefensible: David Lee Roth's "Just a Gigalo"

Heard it this afternoon on the "new" K-Rock, and was reminded of its dreadfulness. Anyone care to make any excuses for this one?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU ARE WRONG.

song is classic from start to finish. Show me another metal-head with the talent, flair, and cajones to brazenly steal/reappropriate a Louis Prima song and hook it onto a succesful, hilarious short film.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than Brian Setzer's Louis Prima cover. Maybe.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

song and video = classic.

What the hell are you talking about, paulhw?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that the video has a scene where Roth pumps his crotch at the censors and one dies of a heart attack is all the defense this song needs.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

David Lee Roth likes to kick Jew-haters in the face, btw.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Exact opposite sentiment dawned on me 2 days ago at a bar. It hit me that David Lee Roth is an amazing singer with a great sense of humor and style; something music is sincerly lacking these days.

Jim Cactus Teeth, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Indefensible? Eh?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla boobuhla
hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla bop

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

boolzee boolzee bop

Titty Bop

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Cactus Teeth (and everybody) you should check out his autobiography: AMAZING. He's so much more of a genius than anyone can really know.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread should be used as evidence in the "What will the general attitude toward ______________be in twenty or thirty years?" threads.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazy From The Heat is indeed an amazing book.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't CFTH out of print? If so, that's a fucking crime. 2.13.61 or someone should reprint it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's out of print, and used copies are going for 20 bucks on amazon. It's worth it.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it is indeed out of print. my copy has been living in my bathroom for the last several months - a great episodic read, so it seems appropriate to enshrine it next to the toilet... Def. one of those things where I read it and, aside from being amused by his weird banter and anecdotes, I came away thinking he is MUCH smarter than I (or anyone else) usually gives him credit for. Certainly he was the brains in VH, no question.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

he seems like kind of a sad case these days though, he doesn't seem to have adjusted well to life out of the limelight. but it's not his fault VH danged that reunion in front of him only to jerk it away.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "hummeleh ziggeleh zeebily bop" says it all, really.

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

His recollection of the "reunion" in the book is priceless. Especially if you've ever been in a band with dipshits before.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"indefensible" my butt. It's great. It may have ultimately cost him his gig in VH, but it's still entertaining.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, looks like I'm on my own here!

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Eddie Van Halen, wife and brother probably agree with you. That's three right there!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Even Sammy Hagar knows this shit is classic!
(a helluvalot better than "I can't drive 55"!)

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I first heard this Prima medley when Alex Harvey covered it, way back in 1979. David Lee Roth's version, esp. the video, still completely classic.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose the existance of this song is justified - however, it belongs nowhere near K-Rock. They should be ashamed for playing it.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it belongs nowhere near K-Rock.

MC Lyte's DJ?

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

loling

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, this one's friggin great.

I was listening to the Prima version the other day, and thinking about how amazing it was the Roth pretty much covers it note for note, and it was HUGE!

Could that ever happen again? Weird. And awesome.

Usual Channels, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The video.

I mean, yeah, what everyone else above said. "Indefensible"?

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread's a joke, right?

RIGHT?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorta curious as to what someone could actually have against this song. Like, someone show up with a well-seasoned rant against DLR please - cuz I can't really imagine what there is to hate about this song (and video).

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't CFTH out of print? If so, that's a fucking crime. 2.13.61 or someone should reprint it.

Rollins edited the book (apparently DLR's manuscript was like five times as long and he had no idea how to structure it so asked Hank for help) so it could happen if rights lapse!

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Rollins is DLR's Max Brod?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I HATE fucking David Lee Roth, but there IS something charming about hearing "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ain't got no-bo-dy"
