is this normal? I tried listening to it again recently and could barely stay awake and I LOVE that type of music. hmmmm....guess my love affair with them is gone.

i think a lot of iron & wine's songs are really pretty ("bird stealing bread," "naked as we came," etc.) but i've never been able to get through an entire album. it's all pretty samey and, yes, often sleep-inducing. this is why sufjan stevens > sam beam.

eventually I got bored with Oasis! it happens to many of us.

lol. i mean, i agree, but sufjan stevens' strength certainly isn't a lack of "samey"ness!

the woman king ep is definitely better than illinois. ("casimir pulaski day" is better than either, mind.)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with an album that ushers in a lovely, refreshing nap

"eventually"

The alt-country acts these days are sounding more and more like that folk singer in the movie ANIMAL HOUSE who gets his guitar smashed by John Belushi. Sure wish he were alive today to do that to Sam Beam. (Or for that matter, Chan Marshall or "Cat Power" or whatever the fuck her name is this week.)

I liked Iron & Wine better when he was locked in a bathroom recording four tracks

You only need one Chris Isaak CD, anyway. Preferably the one w/ "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing," "Graduation Day" and "Somebody's Crying."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

unlike everybody else in this thread, I really loved Iron and Wine. even the new EP, Woman King, I loved for about a week. after that though, ugh, it just got really old. I'm afraid I'm suffering from the same problem, breezy.

I hate it when old loved albums turn just... old

Well, yes and no. He's built a template, sure, but it's more wide-ranging -- there's the slow, sad acoustic songs but also the jaunty Vince Guaraldi numbers. And the breadth of his instrumentation is more appealing.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but the slow, sad acoustic songs and the jaunty Vince Guaraldi numbers always, always go on for twice as long as they need to. so even if the album's got more "breadth", each track is twice as samey! har.
